Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Between Calm and Confusion

Nivara stood there for a moment longer than she should have.

The café door had already closed behind her, but she didn't move right away. Her fingers curled tightly around the strap of her bag, as if holding onto it was the only thing keeping her grounded.

Sorven's words kept echoing in her mind.

Not loudly.

Just… persistently.

Like they didn't want to leave.

She finally exhaled and started walking.

The streets of Eldraven looked the same as always—calm, slightly old-fashioned, almost untouched by time. People passed by her without a second glance, lost in their own worlds.

But she wasn't really in hers.

Not fully.

Her thoughts kept drifting back.

Why does he feel so familiar… when I don't even know him properly?

That was the part she couldn't understand.

It wasn't fear.

It wasn't excitement either.

It was something stuck in between.

Something she couldn't name.

And that unsettled her more than anything else.

By the time she reached home, her mind felt heavy.

She dropped her bag near the chair and sat down on the edge of her bed. The room was quiet, familiar, safe.

But her thoughts weren't.

They kept replaying everything.

His voice.

His gaze.

The way he looked at her like she wasn't a stranger.

Like she belonged in his space without trying.

Nivara pressed her fingers to her forehead and let out a small frustrated sigh.

"This is so stupid…" she whispered to herself.

But even as she said it—

She didn't stop thinking about him.

And that annoyed her even more.

That night, sleep came late.

And even when it did, it wasn't peaceful.

It felt like her mind refused to settle, like something inside her was still waiting for something unspoken.

The next morning felt different.

Not lighter.

Not heavier.

Just… quieter.

Nivara got ready slowly, noticing how her thoughts weren't rushing like yesterday. There was still a small presence of him in the back of her mind—but it wasn't overwhelming anymore.

It had turned into something softer.

Almost like familiarity.

And that scared her a little.

Because she didn't remember earning that familiarity.

When she reached the café, she didn't pause at the door like before.

She simply walked in.

And there he was.

Sorven.

Already sitting at her usual table.

Like it had always been reserved for them.

A small, almost involuntary smile appeared on her face.

"You're early again," she said as she approached.

He looked up calmly. "You're late."

"I'm on time," she corrected, sitting down.

"That's what late people say.

She rolled her eyes slightly, but there was no irritation in it.

It felt… normal.

Strangely normal.

As if this wasn't something new.

As if this had always been like this.

He slid a cup of coffee toward her.

She accepted it without hesitation this time.

"Thanks," she said softly.

Their fingers brushed briefly again.

This time, she didn't pull away immediately.

Just for a second longer than before.

Then she looked down at her cup,

pretending she didn't notice anything.

But she did.

The conversation started easily.

Too easily.

Like there were no barriers between them that needed breaking.

Just words flowing naturally.

Light teasing.

Small arguments.

Unplanned laughter.

At some point, Nivara found herself smiling without realizing it.

And that realization made her pause internally.

Why does this feel… so easy?

She had met him barely days ago.

And yet sitting here felt like something she had done before.

Many times.

"You're thinking again," Sorven said suddenly.

Nivara looked up. "I always think."

"Not like this."

"Like what?"

"Like you're trying to solve something that doesn't need solving."

She frowned slightly. "Everything needs solving."

A faint smile appeared on his lips. "Not everything."

That made her quiet for a moment.

She didn't know why, but the way he said it felt… certain.

Like he knew something she didn't.

A short silence settled between them.

Not awkward.

Just present.

Then Sorven leaned slightly back in his chair.

"Come to dinner with me tonight."

Nivara blinked.

That was abrupt.

"…what?"

"It's my birthday," he said simply.

She stared at him for a second longer.

Then let out a small breath. "You don't waste time, do you?"

"No."

That single word again.

Direct.

Unfiltered.

Unchanged.

She leaned back slightly, crossing her arms.

"We just met," she said.

"I know."

"And you're inviting me to your birthday dinner."

"Yes."

She studied him for a moment.

Trying to find hesitation.

Or a joke.

Or anything that made this feel less serious.

But there was nothing.

Just calm certainty.

"Who else is coming?" she asked finally.

"My family. Friends."

That should have made it normal.

Simple.

Safe.

But her mind still paused.

Not because it felt wrong—

But because it felt… too fast.

Too naturally included in something she wasn't even part of yet.

"You're overthinking," he said softly.

She sighed. "You say that like it's easy to stop."

"It is."

"For you maybe."

He tilted his head slightly. "Then stop doing it for a moment."

She gave him a look. "That's not how minds work."

A faint smile.

"I know."

That answer made her quiet again.

Because it wasn't dismissive.

It felt like he actually understood.

Nivara looked down at her coffee, swirling it slightly.

This was strange.

The situation.

The timing.

Him.

Everything about it should have made her say no instantly.

But instead—

She was still sitting there.

Still listening.

Still considering.

And that was the most confusing part of all.

After a moment, she spoke again.

"If I come and it turns weird, I'm leaving immediately."

"Fair," he said.

"No arguments?"

"No."

That surprised her slightly.

"…that was easy."

"I don't need to argue with something that won't happen."

She narrowed her eyes slightly. "You're very confident."

"I'm just honest."

There was a pause

Then Nivara exhaled slowly.

"Fine," she said finally.

"I'll come."

For the first time, something shifted in his expression.

Not surprise.

Not shock.

Just something subtle.

Satisfied.

"Good," he said quietly.

Evening came faster than she expected.

Nivara stood outside the restaurant, looking at the entrance.

It was elegant but not intimidating. Warm lights glowed through the glass doors. Soft music escaped into the night air. People came and went casually.

Everything looked normal.

Completely normal.

And yet—

Her heart wasn't cooperating.

It was beating slightly faster than it should.

She tightened her grip on her bag.

"It's just dinner," she whispered to herself.

Just dinner.

Nothing else.

She stepped forward.

Pushed the door open.

And walked inside.

The moment she entered—

She stopped.

Her expression changed instantly.

Confusion first.

Then surprise.

Her eyes moved across the space slowly, taking everything in.

Her breath paused for a moment.

"…what is this…"

She said it under her breath.

Because what she was seeing—

Was not what she had prepared herself for.

Not at all.

And for the first time that day—

She felt completely still.
