Kaelen's POV
I stared up at the ceiling, my eyes tracing patterns in the darkness. Sleep remained elusive despite the exhaustion weighing down my bones. My mind refused to quiet itself.
The bedroom had grown dark except for a sliver of moonlight seeping through the heavy curtains. Next to me, Lyra's breathing was steady and soft. She had drifted off quickly once all the stress finally left her body.
I shifted slightly and glanced at her silhouette in the shadows. She lay curled on her side with her back toward me. The comforter had slipped from her shoulder. Without thinking, I reached over and tugged it back into place.
My fingers lingered there for a heartbeat too long before I drew my hand back and let it drop to the mattress.
I shut my eyes and tried once more to find sleep. It remained out of reach.
