Kaelen's POV
The landscape rushed by in a blur of shadows and moonlight. Jaxson's grip on the steering wheel was so fierce his knuckles had turned bone white. I found myself fixated on the endless stretch of asphalt ahead, desperate for it to somehow shrink, for us to arrive at our destination faster than physics would allow.
The hollow ache in my chest persisted. It felt as though someone had scooped out my insides with a rusty spoon. Still, I kept reaching out through our connection, testing it again and again, praying this time would yield something different. That perhaps I'd misunderstood what was happening. That maybe our link had simply been dampened rather than severed.
Each attempt met the same devastating silence. Nothing but void where she should have been.
The needle on the speedometer continued its upward climb. The engine's growl grew more aggressive. Still, we weren't moving fast enough.
That's when I spotted it.
