The estate's main house emerged from behind the treeline as we took the final turn. I could already picture the mysterious woman and her escort sitting in our lounge, probably growing restless with each passing minute. My thoughts were consumed with the urgent questions that demanded answers.
Someone had cursed Lyra with that deadly hex. Someone wanted her dead.
We ascended the stone steps side by side. Jaxson's hand found the heavy oak door first, pulling it wide and stepping aside. The motion was instinctive, born from years of routine protocol between us.
I passed through the threshold without a word of acknowledgment.
Our destination was the ground floor lounge. We navigated the well-worn corridor, our boots barely making a sound against the plush carpet beneath our feet. Golden sunlight streamed through the tall windows, painting elongated shadows along the paneled walls.
Jaxson's hand pressed against the lounge door, pushing it inward.
