My footsteps echoed through the empty corridor as I made my way back toward the ballroom. Each click of my heels on the marble floor sounded hollow, distant, as if they belonged to someone else entirely. The conversation with Kaelen kept circling through my thoughts, replaying like a broken record I couldn't switch off.
That look he'd given me. The flash of something dark and fearful in his eyes right after I'd finished healing Lyra.
It gnawed at me in ways I didn't want to acknowledge.
What had I done to deserve such a reaction? I'd helped his precious Omega. Saved her from whatever poison had nearly killed her. Yet he'd looked at me like I was the threat.
Maybe he was just shaken by what had happened to her. That had to be it.
The sharp ring of my phone cut through the silence. I fished it from my clutch and glanced at the screen. Benedict's name stared back at me, as predictable as it was unwelcome. I exhaled slowly and answered.
