I arched one perfectly sculpted eyebrow at her defiant words. "Such brave talk from someone who could have resisted the first time he reached for you." Another step brought me within striking distance. "Tell me, do you only embrace your principles when it suits you?"
Her chin lifted as she held my stare. "Your fear shows in every elaborate detail of this charade." She swept her gaze across our surroundings. The towering pines. The armed guards. The isolated patch of forest that had become her prison. "If you plan to eliminate me, stop wasting time. This theatrical display bores me."
The sharp crack of flesh meeting flesh echoed through the trees before conscious thought caught up with my actions. My open hand struck her face with enough force to whip her head sideways. The angry red outline of my fingers bloomed instantly across her pale skin.
Such insolence from someone so far beneath my station.
