Kaelen's POV
The infirmary door swung open once more.
A sentinel entered, his face drained of all color. His fists were clenched so tightly at his sides that his knuckles had turned white, as though he was fighting to keep himself from falling apart.
I glanced up from my position next to Lyra's bedside.
"Alpha Kaelen," he said, his words coming out strained and tight. "I must speak with you immediately."
The urgency in his voice sent an uncomfortable chill down my spine.
I pushed myself up from the chair, moving more deliberately than usual, and walked toward him. We positioned ourselves close to the entrance, just out of earshot of the others in the room.
"Tell me," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
The sentinel's throat bobbed as he swallowed hard.
"It concerns Beta Jaxson and his mother, Rhiannon."
Every muscle in my body tensed.
"Go on."
"They are both dead, sir."
The statement hit me like a physical blow to the chest.
