Perfection is a quiet kind of prison.
The kind no one notices.
"Aera, full marks again?"
The professor didn't sound surprised.
He never did.
Aera stood beside her desk, posture straight, expression calm as always. The test paper rested lightly in her hands-clean, precise, untouched by hesitation.
"Good work," he added, already moving on.
Around her, whispers spread."Of course she did.""She always tops.""I stopped trying to compete with her months ago."Aera sat down without reacting. Not because she didn't hear them. But because she had heard it all before.
Perfect.
Brilliant.
Effortless.
Words people used when they didn't look closely enough.
Her friend leaned over, nudging her arm.
"Do you ever get tired of being this good?"
Aera gave a small smile.
"Not really."
It was the right answer.
Because saying yes would lead to questions. And questions led to conversations. And conversations meant explaining things she didn't know how to put into words. So she didn't.
Classes passed the same way they always did.
Notes taken neatly. Answers given correctly. Teachers satisfied. Friends comfortable.
Everything in its place.
Controlled.
It wasn't that Aera didn't feel things.
She did.
Too much, sometimes.
But she had learned, a long time ago, that emotions were easier to manage when they stayed inside.
Contained.
Organized.
Like everything else in her life.
By the time she stepped out onto campus, the air felt heavier than usual.Or maybe she just noticed it more. Her eyes moved instinctively..and found them.
The seven.
They were in a different spot today, closer to the main walkway. One of them was leaning against a railing, watching people pass by like it was a show meant only for him. Another was mid-conversation, his hands moving slightly as he spoke, expression animated.
One of them laughed.
Aera slowed.
It wasn't curiosity this time.
Not entirely.
It was… awareness.
She didn't know why she kept noticing them.
Or why her mind seemed quieter when they were nearby.
"You're staring again."
Her friend's voice broke through, amused.
Aera exhaled softly.
"I know."
"Should I be concerned?"
"Probably."
That earned a laugh.
"Come on," her friend said. "Let's go say hi. I'm curious now."
Aera hesitated.
Just for a second.
She didn't usually hesitate.
Then...
"Fine."
They walked toward them together.
Closer.
Closer.
And then....
"Hey."
The same voice as yesterday.
Aera looked up.
He was already looking at her.
There was something unsettling about that.
Not in a dangerous way.
Just precise.
"You're back," he said.
It wasn't a question.
Aera crossed her arms slightly, more out of habit than defense.
"Is that a problem?"
A pause.
Then..
a faint smile.
"Not at all."
Behind him, one of the others leaned closer to another, whispering something that ended in a quiet laugh.
"They talk a lot," Aera said before she could stop herself.
"Only when it's worth it," one of them replied smoothly.
Her friend snorted.
"I like them already."
Aera didn't say anything.
She was watching.
Again.
Not their faces.
Not their clothes.
Their movements.
Still that slight delay.
Still that feeling of something not aligning perfectly.
"You're doing it again," he said.
Aera blinked.
"whh....What?"
"Looking like you're trying to solve something."
She frowned slightly.
"I'm not."
"You are."
There was no teasing in his tone.
Just certainty.
Aera felt something flicker, sharp, quick.
Annoyance.
"You don't know me," she said.
The words came out faster than she intended.
Silence followed.
Brief.
Light.
Then...
"You're right," he said calmly.
And just like that...
the tension disappeared.
Aera exhaled slowly, more aware of her reaction than his.
That was unnecessary.
She wasn't like that anymore.
Not really.
Before...
she would have snapped harder.
Louder.
Now...
she stopped herself.
Most of the time.
"Sorry," she added, quieter.
"It's fine," he replied easily.
Too easily.
Like nothing about her reaction surprised him.
That bothered her more than it should have.
They introduced themselves again-properly this time.
Names.
Simple.
Normal.
Aera repeated them in her head.
And just like yesterday...they didn't stay.
Strange.
"You're in our department, right?" her friend asked.
"Yeah," one of them nodded. "Just transferred."
"All seven of you?"
"That's the interesting part, isn't it?" another added with a grin.
Aera almost smiled at that.
Almost.
The conversation moved easily after that.
Too easily.
At some point, her friend got pulled into another discussion, leaving Aera standing slightly apart.
Not alone.
Just… separate.
It was familiar.
"You do that a lot," a voice said beside her.
Aera turned.
One of them stood there now.
Not the same one as before.
"Do what?"
"Step back."
Aera frowned.
"I'm literally right here."
"Not really."
The answer was quiet.
Not accusing.
Not intrusive.
Just...
observing.
For a second..
Aera didn't know what to say.
Because she understood what he meant.
And she didn't like that he did.
"I prefer it," she said finally.
A lie.
But a comfortable one.
He didn't argue.
"Alright."
They stood there in silence for a moment.
Strangely....it wasn't uncomfortable.And that was new.Aera wasn't used to silence that didn't feel heavy.She glanced at him.
He wasn't looking at her.
Just ahead.
Calm.
Present.
Real.
For the first time that day...
Aera felt something shift.
Not in her thoughts.
Not in her emotions.
But in the space around them.
Like something had… softened.
She didn't understand it.
She didn't try to.
For once.....she just stood there. And didn't think.Across from them the others exchanged brief glances.
"Careful," one of them murmured.
"She's stabilizing."
"That's the point," another replied.
A pause.
"Is it?"
No one answered.
