Chapter 6 - Where the Mind Begins to Breathe

Aera didn't move for a few seconds after speaking.

The world had already returned to normal. Students walked past, conversations continued, someone nearby complained about an assignment deadline. Everything sounded ordinary again, almost aggressively so.

But the feeling remained.

Not confusion.

Not fear.

Something sharper than that.

Awareness.

"This isn't the first time, is it?"

She repeated it, quieter this time, more to herself than to them.

No one answered immediately.

The seven stood there, their presence unchanged, but something in the air between them had shifted. It wasn't tension exactly. It was closer to recognition like a line had been crossed, even if no one had acknowledged it out loud.

Aera's gaze moved from one to another, searching for something an explanation, a reaction, anything that felt real enough to hold onto.

Instead, she got silence.

Then the gentle one stepped forward slightly."You should go home," he said, his voice calm, almost careful.

It wasn't dismissive. If anything, it sounded like concern. That only made it worse.

"Why?" Aera asked.

No answer.

The intense one looked away, jaw tightening slightly as if holding something back. The silent one remained still, observing her with the same steady focus as before. The playful one seemed unusually quiet now, his earlier ease replaced with something more watchful.

Only the leader spoke.

"For now, it's better if you don't try to understand everything at once."

Aera let out a quiet breath, something between frustration and disbelief.

"You think I won't try?"

There was no edge in her voice, but there didn't need to be.

The leader held her gaze for a moment, then said, "I think you already are."

That was enough.Aera didn't argue again. Not because she agreed, but because she knew she wouldn't get anything more from them right now.So she turned and walked away.

This time, she didn't slow down. She didn't look back. But she could feel it..the shift that had started somewhere between the café and that frozen moment in time.

Something had changed. And it wasn't going back. The walk home felt longer than usual. Not because of distance, but because her thoughts refused to settle into anything clear. Every time she tried to piece things together, they slipped out of reach again.

The pause. The silence. The way everything had stopped.

And the way he had moved when nothing else could.

It didn't make sense.

But it wasn't supposed to anymore.

As she turned into a quieter street, the noise of the main road faded behind her. The air felt still again, but not in the same unnatural way as before. This was normal stillness.

Familiar.

Grounded.

That's when she saw him.

A man sat on the low edge of a closed shop, his elbows resting on his knees, his head slightly lowered. At first glance, there was nothing unusual about him. He looked like any other passerby taking a break.

But something about the way he sat..too still, too withdrawn made Aera slow down.

She didn't mean to stare. But she noticed things. She always had.

His shoulders were tense, not in a physical way, but like something heavier than posture was weighing them down. His hands were loosely clasped, but his fingers twitched slightly, like he was holding back something he couldn't quite release.

People walked past him without a second glance.

No one stopped.

No one noticed.

Aera hesitated. For a moment, she almost kept walking. It wasn't her place. It wasn't her problem.

That's what she told herself. Then she heard it.

A faint, uneven breath.

It wasn't loud.

But it was enough.

Before she could think too much about it, she stepped closer.

"Are you okay?"

The words came out naturally, almost surprising her.

The man looked up.

His eyes were tired. Not just physically, but in a way that suggested something deeper..like he hadn't properly rested in a long time.

"I'm fine," he said quickly.

Aera paused.

That answer felt familiar.

Too familiar.

She nodded slightly. "Right."

For a second, neither of them spoke.

Then she added, "You don't look fine."

He let out a short breath, something close to a laugh but without any real humor.

"Yeah," he admitted quietly. "I get that a lot."

Aera didn't know what to say next.

She wasn't used to these kinds of conversations. She avoided them when she could. But something about the moment felt… different.

"I just need a minute," he said, almost as if he was explaining himself. "It's been a long day."

Aera nodded again.

That made sense.

It always did.

But as she stood there, something else caught her attention.

The air shifted.

Not dramatically.

Not in a way she could point out directly.

Just..slightly.

Her gaze lifted.

And that's when she saw them.

Across the street.

The seven.

They weren't approaching.

They weren't calling out to her.

They were just… there.

Watching.

Aera's chest tightened slightly.

The leader met her gaze briefly, then looked toward the man sitting beside her.

It was a small movement.

But intentional.

Aera followed his line of sight.

Back to the man.

And then..

it happened.

The world didn't stop this time.

It softened.

The sounds around them faded, not completely, but enough to feel distant. The passing footsteps blurred into the background. The movement of people became less sharp, less defined.

Aera felt it before she understood it.

Something was changing.

The man beside her inhaled slowly, his shoulders rising with the breath.

Then, for the first time since she had noticed him he relaxed.

Not all at once.

Not dramatically.

Just a little.

His grip loosened.

His posture shifted.

The tension that had been holding him in place began to ease, almost like something inside him had quietly let go.

Aera watched, her confusion deepening.Nothing had happened.

No words.No action.

And yet..

something had changed.

Across the street, one of them stepped forward slightly.

The elegant one.

He didn't move closer.

He didn't touch anything.

But his focus sharpened, his gaze fixed on the man like he was seeing something beyond what was visible.

Another stood beside him(the warm one)his usual smile softer now, less performative, more… intentional.

Aera's breath slowed without her realizing it.

The man beside her exhaled again, longer this time.

His eyes, which had been unfocused moments ago, seemed clearer now.

"I don't know why," he said quietly, almost to himself, "but I feel a little better."

Aera turned to him.

"You do?"

He nodded slowly.

"Yeah… it's strange."

She didn't respond immediately.

Because she knew.

This wasn't random.

Her gaze lifted again, instinctively.

The seven hadn't moved much.

But something about them felt different now.

Connected.

Like they were part of something she couldn't fully see yet.

"What did you do?" she whispered, though she wasn't sure who she was asking.

No one answered.

But the leader's gaze met hers again.

And this time..he didn't look away.Understanding didn't come all at once.It didn't arrive as a clear explanation or a sudden realization.

It came as a feeling.

The same kind she had felt earlier.

Light.

Not bright.

Not overwhelming.

Just..there.

The man stood up slowly, stretching his shoulders as if something had physically lifted off them.

"Thanks," he said, offering a small, genuine smile.

Aera blinked slightly. "I didn't"...But he had already stepped away, blending back into the flow of people like nothing had happened.

She watched him go.

Then she looked back across the street.

They were still there.

Waiting.

This time, she didn't hesitate. She crossed the street. And stopped a few steps away from them.

"Explain," she said.

It wasn't a demand.

But it wasn't a question either.

For a moment, no one spoke.

Then the gentle one sighed softly, glancing at the others before looking back at her.

"We don't control people," he said.

Aera frowned slightly. "I didn't say you did."

"You were thinking it."

She didn't deny it.

The elegant one spoke next, his voice calm and measured.

"We don't put anything into people," he said. "We only… help them access what's already there."

Aera's expression tightened slightly.

"That doesn't explain what I just saw."

The silent one finally spoke.

"It wasn't for you to see."

That answer didn't help.

"Then why did I?" she asked.

No one responded immediately.

The leader stepped forward slightly.

"Because you're already closer than you should be."

Aera held his gaze.

"And that means what?"

A pause.

"We don't just exist in one place," he said. "Not fully."

Aera didn't understand.

But she listened.

"When people reach a certain point," he continued, "when their thoughts become too heavy, too crowded… we can step in."

"Step in how?"

"Not by changing them," the gentle one added quietly. "Just by clearing the noise."

Aera thought about the man.

The way his shoulders had relaxed.

The way his expression had softened.

"You make them feel better," she said.

"No," the silent one corrected.

"They do."

Silence followed.

Aera exhaled slowly.

This wasn't simple.

It wasn't something she could categorize or explain away.

But it was real.

And for the first time..she wasn't trying to deny it.Her gaze moved across all seven of them.

Different.

Every one of them.

And yet..connected.

"You're not normal," she said.

The playful one smiled slightly. "That took you long enough."

Aera didn't smile back.

"Neither are you," the leader said.

That..

made her pause.

"What does that mean?"

But he didn't answer.

Not this time.
