Chapter 18 - ARC-1: AWAKENING

Chapter-18:Beneath the Surface

The academy slept Or at least—It pretended to.

Lights dimmed.Corridors empty.Silence everywhere.

But Raj—Didn't stop.He moved through the lower levels.Alone and Quiet. Following memory.

Following instinct and Following—The signal.

"…It was here."He stopped.The same corridor.

The same door.Half-open.Dark inside.

No guards, No seals, Nothing.Too easy.

Raj stepped closer. The air felt heavier again.

Like before.Cold.Unnatural.

His system flickered.

[Residual Energy Detected]

"…So something was here."Not imagination.

Not illusion.Real.Raj pushed the door open fully.

--CREAK.Inside, Darkness.Thick.Unwelcoming.

He stepped in.Slow.Controlled.Each step—

Measured.The floor—Dusty.Unused.Or…

Forgotten.But not empty.Never empty.

Raj crouched slightly. His fingers brushed the ground.

"…Marks."Faint, Scratches on everywhere Circular, Like something—Dragged.Repeatedly.His eyes narrowed.Not random.Pattern.He stood.Scanning the room.Walls cracked.Old symbols carved faintly.

Almost erased.Almost hidden.But not completely.

"…This place…"Wasn't just abandoned.It was sealed.Long ago.And then—Reopened.

The system flickered stronger.

[Trace Analysis…]

[Unknown Energy Signature]

Raj's breathing slowed.Focused."…Show me more."

He raised his hand. Not to take a fight.

But—To read.A faint thread appeared.Different from before.Not connected to a person.But—

To the environment, To the leftover energy.

[Energy Reading: Residual]

Images flashed.Broken.Incomplete.

But enough.A figure.Standing here.Still, Calm.

Watching.The same presence.Then—Another.

Smaller but Closer.The Null-Type.

Raj's eyes snapped open."…So you were here together."Not separate.Not random.Connected.

Before he could process further—A sound.

Behind him.Soft, Light But real.

Raj didn't turn immediately."…You're late."

Silence.Then—"…You're early."The familiar voice.

Calm.Flat.The Null-Type.Raj turned slowly.

There they were.Standing at the entrance.

Watching him."…I was wondering when you'd come," Raj said.A faint smirk."…You left traces behind."

The Null-Type stepped in.Unbothered.

"…Not for you."

Raj tilted his head slightly."…But I found them."

A pause."…That's enough."Silence settled.

Thick, Heavy.

Then—"…You shouldn't be here," the Null-Type said.

Not threatening.Not warning.

Just—Stating.Raj crossed his arms slightly.

"…And you should?"A faint smile."…I belong here."The answer came too easily.Too confidently.

Raj's eyes sharpened."…So you're part of this."

Not a question.The Null-Type didn't deny it.

Didn't confirm it either.Just—Watched.

"…What is this place?"Raj asked.

A pause.Longer this time.Then—"…A door."

The answer was simple. But wrong."…To what?"

Silence.The Null-Type stepped closer.Slow.

Measured."…To something your system doesn't understand."

The system flickered violently.

As if reacting.As if—Disagreeing.

Raj smiled faintly."…Then I'll make it understand."

A dangerous statement.The air shifted.

Just slightly.The Null-Type's eyes narrowed.

For the first time—Interest turned sharp.

"…Careful."A step closer."…Some things aren't meant to be taken."Raj didn't move.

Didn't step back."…Everything can be taken."

A pause."…You're proof of that."Silence.

Then—The Null-Type laughed softly.

"…You really believe that."Not mocking.

Not dismissive.Just—Observing.Raj's eyes didn't waver."…I'll prove it."For a moment—

Neither moved.The tension—Tight.

Unstable.Then—The Null-Type stepped back.

"…Not here."A quiet decision."…Not yet."

Raj's fingers twitched slightly. He's avoiding something…"…Why would he do that?"

The question came instantly.

The Null-Type glanced around the room. Then back at him."…Because this place…"A pause.

"…isn't for fighting."Something in their tone—

Changed.Just slightly.Enough to notice.

Raj's eyes narrowed. So this place matters.

"…Then what is it for?"Silence.Long.Then—

"…You'll find out."The same answer.Again.

But this time—Different.Heavier.The Null-Type turned.Walking away.But before leaving—

They stopped."…You felt it, didn't you?"

Raj didn't reply.But his silence—Was enough.

The Null-Type continued."…That presence."

A pause."…It's not like you.""…And not like me."

The air grew colder."…Then what is it?" Raj asked.

For the first time—A real question.

The Null-Type didn't turn."…Something older."

A pause."…Something that doesn't steal…"

"…It devours."Silence.Then—They left.

Gone.Just like that.Raj stood alone.Again.

But now—The room felt different.

Heavier and Alive.Watching.

The system flickered slowly.

Uncertain.

For the first time—

Uncertain.

[New Threat Classification Pending…]

Raj exhaled slowly."…Devours…"A faint smile appeared. Not a fear, Not an hesitation.

Just—Curiosity."…Then I'll take even that."

His eyes sharpened.Focused.Dangerous.

Because now—This wasn't just about power.

Or control. Or survival. It was about something deeper.Something hidden.Something—

Waiting.And Raj—

Had just stepped into it.
