Chapter 9: The Hidden Truth

The night hadn't ended yet.

Inside the safe house, silence spread again—but this time, it wasn't calm. It was heavy. Dangerous.

Anaya sat on the edge of the bed, her eyes fixed on the monitor screen. The shadow had escaped… and that single thought kept repeating in her mind.

If he escaped… then this isn't over.

Kabir returned after securing the basement. His expression was serious—more than before.

"He's gone," Kabir said quietly.

Anaya looked at him instantly.

"Gone? How is that possible? The entire place is secured!"

Kabir didn't respond immediately. He walked toward the system panel and replayed the footage. Frame by frame.

Then he stopped.

"There…" he pointed.

Anaya stepped closer. The footage showed a brief glitch—just two seconds. The camera froze… then resumed.

Kabir's jaw tightened.

"This wasn't a normal intrusion. Someone hacked the system from inside."

Anaya felt a chill run down her spine.

"Inside…? You mean—someone already knows this place?"

Kabir turned to her.

"Not just knows… they've been watching."

A deep silence filled the room.

Anaya's breathing became uneven.

"All this time… we thought we were hiding…"

Kabir completed her sentence,

"But we were already exposed."

Suddenly, another alert flashed on the screen.

"Unauthorized Access: File Room"

Kabir reacted instantly.

"Stay here. Don't move."

But this time, Anaya didn't listen.

"I'm coming with you."

Kabir looked at her for a moment—then nodded.

"Stay behind me. No matter what happens."

They moved through the dim corridor together. The lights flickered slightly, adding to the tension. Every step echoed louder than usual.

Reaching the file room, the door was slightly open.

Kabir pushed it slowly.

Inside, files were scattered across the floor. Cabinets were open.

Someone had searched everything.

Anaya's eyes widened.

"What are they looking for?"

Kabir walked straight to one locked drawer—which was now broken open.

Inside… one file was missing.

Kabir froze.

Anaya stepped closer.

"Kabir… what was in that file?"

Kabir hesitated.

Then finally spoke,

"That file… contains your past."

Anaya felt like the ground slipped beneath her feet.

"My… past?"

Kabir looked at her, his expression intense.

"Anaya… what if I tell you—this isn't random?"

Her heartbeat accelerated.

"What do you mean?"

Kabir took a deep breath.

"You're not just a target…"

A pause.

"You're the reason all of this started."

Silence.

Heavy. Shocking.

Anaya stepped back slowly.

"No… that's not possible…"

But before Kabir could explain further—

Lights went out.

Darkness.

Complete darkness.

And then—

A voice echoed in the room.

Low. Cold. Familiar.

"Finally… you're starting to understand, Anaya."

Anaya's eyes widened in fear.

"Kabir… did you hear that?"

But Kabir didn't respond.

Because for the first time—

Kabir wasn't standing beside her.
