Chapter 28 - Chapter 28: The Awakening

The city was breaking. Sirens screamed in every direction, lights flickered uncontrollably, and panic spread through the streets like something alive. Above it all, the countdown continued—unstoppable, merciless.

02:03:11 remaining…

Inside the ruined relay station, Kabir struggled to stay conscious. Blood loss slowed his every movement, his vision blurring with each breath. But what haunted him more wasn't the pain—it was Anaya. The way she had looked before leaving. Cold. Empty. Controlled. Not the Anaya he knew.

"Anaya…" he whispered weakly.

Far from him, in the darkness of an abandoned corridor, footsteps echoed softly. Slow. Steady. Unstoppable. Anaya moved forward without hesitation, her face calm, her eyes sharp and emotionless. Every movement precise, almost mechanical. This wasn't survival anymore. This was execution.

The device in her hand pulsed faintly, its signal syncing with something deep inside her mind. A voice echoed within—cold and distant.

"Subject A-17… activated."

Her breathing remained steady. Target locked.

Across the city, Phase 2 was unfolding. Operatives moved in coordination, systems collapsed, and control tightened. But suddenly, something began to shift. One by one, signals started dropping. Units stopped responding. Entire teams vanished without a trace. No alarms. No warnings. Just silence.

In a hidden control room, the man watched as screen after screen went dark. His expression didn't change, but his eyes sharpened slightly.

"So… you finally let it out," he murmured.

Back in the shadows, Anaya moved like something unseen. One moment the corridor was empty, the next—an operative lay unconscious on the ground. No noise, no struggle. Every strike perfect. Every movement efficient. She wasn't fighting anymore. She was eliminating.

Two guards rushed into a hallway, weapons raised. "Check the signal loss here!" one shouted.

A flicker.

They froze.

Too late.

Within seconds, both collapsed before they even understood what had happened. Anaya stepped forward, her expression unchanged. A drop of blood slid down her hand, but she didn't react.

Her device beeped softly. A new location appeared.

Primary Control Node Detected.

Without hesitation, she turned and moved.

Back at the relay station, Kabir forced himself to stand. Pain tore through his body, but he didn't stop. He held onto the wall, dragging himself forward step by step.

"I have to stop her…" he whispered.

Because somewhere deep down, he understood something terrifying—if Anaya went too far, she might never come back.

Meanwhile, Anaya reached the core facility. This one was different—heavily guarded, layered security, armed units everywhere. But none of it slowed her. One by one, the guards fell. Systems were disabled. The entrance was breached within minutes.

She walked inside like she already knew the way.

The final door opened slowly.

And there he was.

The man stood calmly in the center of the room, as if he had been waiting. No guards. No fear. Just silence.

"You came," he said softly.

Anaya didn't respond. Her cold eyes locked onto him.

He stepped closer, studying her carefully. "This… is the real you," he said with a faint smile. "No hesitation. No emotion. Just perfection."

Silence.

He circled her slowly. "Tell me, Anaya… do you feel it? The control? The clarity?"

Her fingers tightened slightly. A small reaction—but enough.

He noticed. His smile grew.

"You were never meant to be free," he continued. "You were meant to be flawless."

For a brief second, something flickered in Anaya's eyes. A crack. A memory.

Kabir.

His voice.

"Trust me…"

Her breathing changed—just slightly.

The man stopped. His expression sharpened. "No… don't fight it," he said quietly. "That part of you is weakness."

Anaya's gaze shifted.

For the first time since she arrived… she spoke.

Low. Controlled. Dangerous.

"You're wrong."

The man's smile faded just a little.

Before he could react—Anaya moved. Faster than before, sharper than anything he had anticipated. She attacked without warning, forcing him back.

For the first time—he blocked instead of controlled.

The fight had begun.

But this wasn't the same Anaya anymore.

And deep down… even he hadn't expected this version of her.

Outside, the countdown kept ticking.

01:27:42 remaining…

And this time—

No one was in control.
