Chapter 109 - Chapter 109: Before the Deployment Begins

The academy did not sleep after the Headmaster's announcement, and as the night deepened across the enormous mountain-sized grounds, the entire institution shifted into continuous motion beneath the glow of activated barrier formations and transport arrays, every district operating without pause while operational teams prepared for accelerated deployment toward the northeastern sectors.

Kael stood near the upper eastern terrace overlooking the academy below, his gaze following the movement spreading through the countless structures beneath the night sky.

From above, the scale of the academy became clearer than ever.

Combat divisions mobilizing near the lower gates.

Research towers illuminating one floor after another as analysts monitored distortion readings.

Medical sectors opening emergency preparation zones.

Even the ceremonial districts from earlier had transformed completely, noble delegates now gathered alongside instructors in tactical discussions instead of formal celebrations.

The Recognition Assembly had ended without ever officially concluding.

Reality had interrupted it first.

Aren leaned against the railing beside him and let out a slow breath.

"…I can't even tell if this place is an academy anymore."

Kael answered calmly.

"…It's both."

A pause.

"…Training and preparation."

Lyra approached from behind them carrying several crystal tablets filled with shifting operational data while Draven followed silently beside her.

"The northeastern routes changed again," she said immediately.

Aren frowned.

"…Already?"

Lyra nodded.

"The distortion fields are moving faster after the last pulse."

Draven added quietly.

"…Three transport corridors collapsed within the last hour."

Kael's eyes narrowed slightly.

That confirmed his earlier concern.

The source wasn't merely expanding randomly anymore.

It was actively destabilizing approach routes toward itself.

Not preventing access entirely.

Controlling it.

Aren rubbed his forehead.

"…Why does it suddenly feel like this thing actually knows what it's doing?"

No one answered.

Because that question no longer sounded unreasonable.

Far below them, another deployment team crossed the lower transport platforms before disappearing beyond the academy's eastern gates.

Senior students.

Instructors.

Even external operatives from noble houses.

The academy had begun combining forces openly now.

Selene and Hammer approached shortly after from the western side of the terrace, both noticeably more serious than earlier during the plaza gathering.

"The northern observation clans confirmed environmental fractures beyond the mountain ranges," Selene said immediately.

Hammer nodded once.

"The Deepforge scouts lost contact with two outer monitoring stations."

Aren stared slightly.

"…You people seriously have your own monitoring networks too?"

Selene looked at him like the answer should have been obvious.

"Every major race does."

Cassian arrived moments later, his academy uniform partially covered now by a dark formal combat coat marked with his family insignia.

Aren blinked.

"…Okay, now you definitely look important."

Cassian sighed quietly.

"My family's deployment council won't stop assigning escorts."

Selene smirked faintly.

"You say that like anyone could actually force you to stay behind."

Cassian ignored the comment completely.

Instead, his attention shifted toward Kael.

"The academy confirmed forward deployment schedules."

Kael looked toward him.

Cassian's expression sharpened slightly.

"Second and third operational teams leave tomorrow."

Silence followed.

Because that meant the academy had stopped waiting for stabilization entirely.

The source's expansion had forced action earlier than expected.

Lyra crossed her arms slightly.

"…Then they're trying to establish external pressure before the next pulse."

Draven nodded quietly.

"…Otherwise the outer sectors become unreachable."

Hammer looked toward the distant northeastern horizon where faint distortions still spread across the night sky.

"The old records described this stage."

Everyone's attention shifted toward him immediately.

Hammer continued calmly.

"The collapse accelerated after the boundaries weakened beyond containment range."

Aren frowned.

"…Boundaries between what exactly?"

For a moment, Hammer remained silent.

Then—

"…That part of the records is incomplete."

Selene's expression darkened slightly.

"The beast clans describe it differently."

Kael looked toward her.

She leaned lightly against the railing, though her earlier relaxed attitude was completely gone now.

"Our oldest stories don't describe the collapse as an invasion."

A pause.

"…They describe it as overlap."

Silence settled heavily across the terrace.

Because that word carried implications far larger than simple distortions or unstable mana.

Lyra's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…Two realities intersecting."

Selene nodded once.

"That's what the northern shamans believed."

Draven spoke quietly.

"…Which would explain why the distortions ignore natural structure."

Kael remained silent.

Thinking.

Because if the source wasn't creating instability—

But connecting worlds—

Then everything the academy had faced so far represented only the early stages of something much larger.

A sudden burst of mana pressure spread across the academy below, interrupting the conversation as several enormous transport platforms activated simultaneously near the eastern deployment district.

Aren looked downward immediately.

"…What now?"

Cassian's expression sharpened.

"…Forward deployment."

The first operational teams were moving.

Across the academy grounds, students and instructors paused briefly to watch as the massive transport structures rose slowly into the night sky surrounded by layered defensive formations.

Kael observed carefully.

The teams boarding them were different from normal academy squads.

Older.

Experienced.

Some wore academy uniforms.

Others carried insignias from noble houses, imperial divisions, beast clans, and even dwarven military orders.

For the first time—

The continent's major powers were deploying together directly.

Aren exhaled slowly.

"…That's a lot of people."

Lyra answered quietly.

"…And still probably not enough."

No one argued.

Because if the source truly resembled the old collapse—

Then even this scale of mobilization might only slow it.

The transport platforms accelerated eastward moments later, disappearing rapidly into the distant night beyond the academy barriers.

Silence followed after their departure.

Not calm.

Heavy.

Kael looked toward the northeastern horizon again.

The distorted sky still pulsed faintly in the distance.

Waiting.

Watching.

Then—

A soft voice came from behind them.

"…So you're the students everyone's talking about."

The group turned.

An unfamiliar figure stood near the entrance to the terrace corridor, a young elf slightly older than them with long silver hair tied loosely behind his back and academy robes marked with emerald insignias Kael hadn't seen before.

But what stood out most—

Was his mana.

Calm.

Refined.

Ancient-feeling.

Selene's expression sharpened slightly.

"…You're from the Silver Forest delegation."

The elf inclined his head politely.

"Elian Vaelith."

Hammer crossed his arms.

"…High branch bloodline."

Elian smiled faintly.

"You recognize the crest."

Hammer answered simply.

"It's old."

Elian's gaze shifted toward Kael then.

Measured.

Interested.

"I wanted to see the student who forced the royal heir serious."

Aren muttered quietly.

"…Why does everybody keep saying it like that?"

Cassian ignored him.

Instead, his eyes narrowed slightly toward Elian.

"You came here personally just for that?"

Elian's faint smile remained.

"Partly."

Then his gaze shifted toward the northeastern horizon.

"…And partly because my people recognize those distortions."

Silence fell instantly again.

Because now—

Another race had confirmed it.

The source wasn't unknown.

It was remembered.

And slowly—

The fragmented pieces of the old collapse were beginning to connect together once more.
