Cherreads

Chapter 108 - Chapter 108: The Pulse That Reached the Academy

The operational bell echoed a second time across the academy, deeper than before, and almost immediately the atmosphere throughout the central plaza shifted from relaxed conversation into restrained alertness as instructors began moving through the surrounding pathways with clear purpose, their expressions controlled but noticeably sharper than earlier during the ceremonies.

Students across the plaza looked toward the northeastern horizon instinctively.

Not because they understood exactly what had happened.

Because everyone could feel it.

A faint vibration spread through the air itself.

Not physical.

Mana.

Kael noticed it immediately.

The flow surrounding the academy had changed.

Subtly.

But undeniably.

Lyra stood from her seat at once, her gaze lifting toward the upper academy structures where several barrier formations had begun activating along the skyline.

"…That's stronger than the previous pulses."

Draven nodded quietly.

"…Much stronger."

Aren frowned.

"…You can actually tell from here?"

Hammer answered before anyone else.

"The mana pressure reached the inner districts."

Even Selene's earlier casual attitude had disappeared now, her golden eyes fixed toward the northeastern edge of the academy walls.

"…That's not normal."

The plaza around them gradually emptied as students redirected toward designated sectors while instructors issued rapid instructions across multiple pathways.

Above the academy, several floating transport platforms activated simultaneously, moving toward the northeastern observation towers.

Kael remained still for only a moment longer before speaking.

"…We should move."

No one disagreed.

They left the plaza immediately, crossing the lower bridges alongside streams of students and academy personnel now moving in coordinated patterns throughout the grounds.

And as they advanced toward the upper operational district—

The scale of the academy's response became visible.

Barrier formations lit across multiple towers.

Research divisions activated long-range observation arrays.

Combat instructors deployed toward outer sectors without hesitation.

This wasn't preparation anymore.

It was reaction.

Aren exhaled quietly while watching a squad of senior students rush overhead along elevated transport rails.

"…Yeah… okay… they're definitely worried now."

Cassian suddenly appeared ahead of them from one of the connecting corridors, his expression calmer than most students around him but noticeably more serious than earlier during the ceremony.

"You felt it too."

Kael nodded once.

"Yes."

Cassian glanced briefly toward Selene and Hammer before looking back toward the northeastern sky.

"The upper district already confirmed a large-scale instability surge beyond sector sixteen."

Lyra's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…Convergence?"

Cassian shook his head immediately.

"No."

A brief pause.

"…Expansion."

Silence followed.

Because that word carried a completely different meaning.

Draven spoke quietly.

"…The source region grew."

Cassian nodded once.

"Rapidly."

Aren rubbed his forehead.

"…Can this thing stop evolving for five minutes?"

No one answered.

Because the answer was obvious now.

They reached the upper observation terrace shortly after, joining dozens of students and instructors already gathered along the elevated platforms overlooking the northeastern territory beyond the academy.

And for the first time—

Kael could see it directly.

Far beyond the distant mountains, near the edge of visible territory, the sky itself looked wrong.

Not broken.

Distorted.

Faint dark patterns spread across the clouds in slow circular movement while unstable mana currents flickered across the horizon like cracks beneath transparent glass.

The source region had expanded enough to become visible even from the academy.

Aren stared silently for several seconds.

"…That's really far away."

Lyra's expression tightened slightly.

"…And we can still feel it here."

The implication settled heavily.

If the pulse reached the academy from that distance—

Then the source's influence had grown exponentially stronger than before.

Across the terrace, instructors coordinated rapidly around projection arrays displaying fluctuating mana readings from multiple sectors.

Fragments of conversation spread throughout the crowd.

"Outer barriers destabilized again."

"Sector nineteen lost observation continuity."

"The northeastern routes are collapsing too quickly."

Kael observed quietly.

Not only the reports.

The reactions.

Even the instructors who normally remained completely composed now carried visible tension beneath their controlled expressions.

Because whatever happened beyond sector sixteen—

Had accelerated the situation dramatically.

A familiar pressure suddenly spread across the terrace as several figures arrived from the upper ceremonial district.

Nobles.

But not ordinary delegates.

The imperial observers from earlier.

The moment they appeared, several instructors shifted aside immediately.

Aren lowered his voice slightly.

"…Yeah, I still don't like them."

Selene's gaze narrowed faintly.

"The empire doesn't move unless the situation threatens continental stability."

Hammer crossed his arms.

"…Which means they're already considering intervention."

Cassian's expression sharpened slightly.

"…If the empire deploys directly, panic spreads everywhere."

Kael understood.

The academy had likely been trying to contain information precisely to avoid that outcome.

But now—

Containment itself was failing.

One of the imperial representatives stepped toward the edge of the terrace, calmly observing the distant distortion spreading across the horizon before speaking quietly to the surrounding instructors.

"…The expansion rate exceeds historical records."

Historical records.

Again.

Kael noticed the subtle reaction from several instructors nearby.

Not surprise.

Confirmation.

The old collapse was no longer treated like uncertain history.

It had become operational reference.

Lyra spoke quietly beside Kael.

"…They really have seen this before."

Draven nodded slightly.

"…At least partially."

A deep vibration suddenly spread through the air again.

Stronger this time.

The entire terrace fell silent.

Far in the distance, the distorted sky pulsed once—

And several of the visible cracks across the horizon widened briefly before stabilizing again.

Aren's expression changed immediately.

"…What was that?"

No one answered right away.

Because every instructor on the terrace was already focused on the same thing.

The source had not merely expanded.

It had reacted.

One of the academy researchers near the projection arrays spoke sharply.

"Mana synchronization increasing across all northeastern sectors!"

Another voice followed immediately.

"Environmental distortion spreading beyond containment projections!"

The terrace erupted into coordinated movement again as instructors relayed orders across multiple communication arrays.

Kael remained focused on the horizon.

Because now—

He could feel it too.

Not just instability.

Presence.

Something beyond the academy was becoming more active with every pulse.

Selene's tail moved slowly behind her again, though this time not casually.

Agitated.

"…It's waking up faster now."

Hammer nodded once.

"…Too fast."

Cassian looked toward Kael briefly.

"…You thinking what I'm thinking?"

Kael answered quietly.

"…The source noticed the academy."

Silence followed instantly.

Because that possibility—

Changed everything.

If the source had only been developing naturally before, the academy still controlled part of the situation.

But if it had become aware enough to react intentionally—

Then the balance had shifted completely.

The Headmaster suddenly appeared at the highest observation platform above the terrace, his presence alone enough to still the surrounding chaos slightly as every instructor and student looked upward.

His gaze remained fixed toward the northeastern horizon.

Calm.

Steady.

But sharper than before.

Then he spoke.

"All operational teams prepare for accelerated deployment."

No ceremony.

No hesitation.

Just command.

"The source region has entered active expansion."

The academy fell completely silent.

Because everyone understood what those words meant.

The waiting phase—

Was over.
