Chapter 114 - Chapter 114: Beneath the Quiet Between Words

The courtyard had grown quieter by the time most students returned to their dormitories, the academy lanterns casting long silver reflections across the stone pathways as the night deepened around the central grounds, and for a while, neither Kael nor Elaris moved from where they stood beneath the pale glow of the lantern tree.

The wind shifted softly between them.

Carrying silence—

But not discomfort.

Elaris studied him calmly, golden eyes unwavering. "You're calmer than before."

Kael looked at her. "…Is that a bad thing?"

"No."

Her answer came immediately.

Then after a brief pause, she added, "But it's different."

Kael understood what she meant.

Before Sector Fourteen, his focus had always carried tension beneath it, as if every movement needed to achieve something, every action needing purpose or control. But now—

That pressure had lessened.

Not disappeared.

Just changed.

"…You noticed quickly," he said.

Elaris' gaze shifted briefly toward the academy towers above them. "You weren't difficult to read before."

Kael frowned slightly. "…Was I supposed to take that as criticism?"

For the first time in several conversations—

A faint smile appeared on her face.

Small.

Subtle.

But undeniably real.

"…Maybe."

Kael stared at her for a second longer than intended.

Then looked away first.

Somewhere nearby, students passed through the lower pathways laughing loudly about something unrelated to training or rankings, their voices briefly interrupting the stillness before fading again into the distance.

The academy felt alive tonight.

Not tense.

Not preparing for battle.

Just—

Normal.

And somehow, after everything that had happened recently, that normalcy felt unfamiliar.

Elaris noticed his gaze moving across the courtyard. "You're observing everything again."

"…Habit."

"No," she replied quietly. "Not habit."

Kael looked back at her.

"You're trying to understand where you stand now."

The words landed more accurately than he expected.

Because she was right.

Ever since returning from Sector Fourteen, something about the academy felt different to him. Not physically.

But mentally.

The training halls.

The rankings.

The combat evaluations.

They still mattered.

But now he understood there were things beyond them.

Things not measured by academy systems.

Elaris spoke again before the silence could settle too deeply.

"The upper facilities open in three days."

Kael nodded once. "Selene mentioned it."

"Most first-years never gain access this early."

"…And yet we are."

Elaris' expression became slightly more serious. "That alone should tell you the academy is worried."

Kael already understood that much.

The distortions.

The unstable entities.

The hidden sections beneath the academy.

None of it aligned with the structured image the institution presented publicly.

And yet—

Despite all that—

Students still attended classes.

Still argued over rankings.

Still trained every day beneath the same skies.

As if the academy itself insisted on maintaining normalcy no matter what existed beneath it.

"…Why are you still here?" Kael asked suddenly.

Elaris blinked once. "…What?"

"You could've left earlier."

A brief silence followed.

Then she answered honestly.

"…Because I wanted to see whether you changed."

Kael stared at her quietly.

There was no hesitation in her voice.

No embarrassment.

Just direct honesty.

And strangely—

That honesty unsettled him more than if she had avoided the answer entirely.

"…And?" he asked after a moment.

Elaris' eyes remained fixed on him.

"You did."

The wind moved between them again.

Soft.

Cold.

Neither looked away.

Then suddenly—

"You two are being weird again."

Aren's voice shattered the atmosphere instantly.

Kael closed his eyes slowly.

Elaris sighed almost invisibly.

Aren walked toward them carrying two paper bags filled with food containers, looking between both of them suspiciously.

"…Every time I find you together, it feels like I interrupted a secret meeting."

"You interrupted nothing," Elaris replied calmly.

"That sounds exactly like what someone in a secret meeting would say."

Kael looked at Aren. "…Why are you here?"

"To eat."

Aren lifted one of the bags proudly.

"The cafeteria near the eastern dorms started serving grilled wyvern skewers tonight."

Kael blinked once. "…Wyvern?"

"Small wyvern," Aren corrected immediately. "Probably."

"That does not make it better."

"It tastes incredible, so morality no longer matters."

Elaris looked genuinely concerned now. "…How are you still alive?"

"Talent."

"That's not talent."

"It's dedication."

Kael rubbed the side of his forehead slightly.

For some reason—

After everything that happened in Sector Fourteen—

This conversation felt absurdly normal.

And maybe that was exactly why it helped.

Aren suddenly narrowed his eyes while staring between Kael and Elaris again.

"…Wait."

Neither responded.

"…Was I actually interrupting something?"

"No," both answered immediately.

Aren's grin widened.

"…That was suspiciously synchronized."

Elaris turned away first. "I'm leaving."

Aren pointed dramatically. "ESCAPING THE ACCUSATIONS."

"You're insufferable."

"I've been told that before."

Elaris glanced once more toward Kael before walking past them toward the upper residential sector, her silver-white hair catching the lantern light briefly before disappearing into the crowd beyond the courtyard.

Aren watched her leave before looking at Kael again.

"…You know she likes talking to you, right?"

Kael frowned slightly. "…She talks normally."

"No," Aren said immediately. "That's her version of liking someone."

Kael stared at him silently.

"…You understand absolutely nothing about people."

"That sounds like a personal attack."

"It is."

Aren sighed dramatically before tossing one of the food bags toward him.

Kael caught it automatically.

"…What is this?"

"Food."

"I can see that."

"Then my explanation was sufficient."

Kael opened the bag slightly.

The smell was surprisingly good.

"…You bought extra?"

Aren shrugged. "You barely ate during the mission."

A small silence followed.

Then Kael said quietly, "…Thanks."

Aren blinked once before immediately looking uncomfortable.

"…Don't say emotional things suddenly. I'm not prepared."

Kael almost smiled.

Almost.

The two continued walking through the academy pathways afterward, the atmosphere lighter now than it had been since their return, and as they crossed one of the elevated bridges connecting the dormitory sectors, the true scale of the academy spread out beneath them once more.

Massive training grounds glowed faintly in the distance.

Towering libraries extended across entire sections of the northern district.

Floating platforms moved between upper structures through controlled mana currents.

And farther away—

Kael noticed another section he hadn't explored yet.

A circular building surrounded by flowing streams of blue light, connected to several workshop towers releasing faint sparks into the night sky.

He looked toward it.

"…What's that place?"

Aren followed his gaze.

"Oh. That's the Artificer Division."

"…Artificers?"

"Engineers. Rune specialists. Weapon creators. Mana technology people."

Kael watched the distant structure carefully.

Students moved constantly between the towers, some carrying mechanical devices while others tested glowing constructs within open testing areas.

"…The academy has an entire division for that?"

Aren looked confused. "Of course it does."

Kael remained silent.

Because once again—

The academy felt larger than he originally thought.

Not just in size.

But in purpose.

Combat wasn't the only path here.

Magic wasn't the only field.

The academy trained strategists.

Researchers.

Artificers.

Scholars.

Entire systems existed beneath the surface he still hadn't explored.

And somehow—

That realization made the world feel even bigger than before.

Aren stretched his arms again while walking.

"…Anyway, upper facility access starts soon."

"Yes."

"You nervous?"

Kael thought for a moment.

"…No."

Then after a brief pause:

"…Curious."

Aren grinned slightly. "Yeah."

Above them, the academy towers continued glowing beneath the endless night sky while students moved through countless illuminated pathways below, each carrying different ambitions, different goals, different strengths.

And somewhere within that enormous structure—

The next phase of their academy life was already beginning.
