Chapter 115 - Chapter 115: The Hall Beyond First Years

The following morning, the academy felt louder than usual.

Not chaotic.

Focused.

Students filled the main pathways earlier than normal, conversations spreading rapidly between groups as rumors about the upper facility permissions continued moving through the academy faster than the official announcements themselves, and by the time Kael entered the central courtyard, several first-years were already staring openly at the students whose names had appeared on the restricted access list.

"…This is getting annoying," Aren muttered beside him.

"You noticed too?" Lyra asked calmly.

"They've been staring since breakfast."

"That's because your voice carries across entire buildings," Draven said.

"That's not related."

"It is."

Aren looked personally attacked.

Kael ignored the conversation while scanning the large mana display floating above the central academy square. Names continued shifting across the projection as permissions updated in real time, silver lines forming beside selected students before fading again.

Most names disappeared quickly.

Temporary access.

Limited permissions.

Restricted areas.

But a small number remained visible.

Kael's was one of them.

"So we officially have upper clearance now," Aren said.

"Partial clearance," Lyra corrected immediately.

"Still sounds important."

Because it was.

Normally, first-years remained almost entirely separated from the academy's higher divisions. Their classes, training fields, dormitories, and evaluations were intentionally isolated from upper-year facilities until later progression phases.

But now—

That separation was changing.

Kael looked upward toward the higher levels of the academy visible beyond the floating structures overhead.

"…Where exactly are we being sent?"

"North upper sector," Lyra answered. "Specialized instruction halls."

Aren blinked. "…How do you already know that?"

"I asked."

"…Right. Forgot normal people gather information."

The group continued across the courtyard while the morning atmosphere intensified around them. Students hurried between classes carrying weapons, books, or mana devices while instructors moved through the pathways far more frequently than before, their expressions sharper, conversations quieter.

The academy was preparing for something.

Not panic.

Preparation.

There was a difference.

As they approached the northern transit platform, Kael noticed several unfamiliar students standing nearby wearing uniforms different from standard first-year attire.

Silver-lined coats.

Higher rank insignias.

Upper-year students.

One of them—a tall beast-human male with dark gray hair and sharp amber eyes—leaned casually against the platform barrier while speaking with another student, his ears twitching slightly as groups passed nearby.

Aren stared for a moment. "…That guy's huge."

"He's from the second combat division," Lyra said quietly.

"You know everyone."

"No. I pay attention."

The beast-human student glanced briefly toward their group before losing interest almost immediately, but the pressure surrounding him lingered noticeably even after his gaze moved away.

Not overwhelming.

Just controlled.

Experienced.

Kael understood immediately.

That student was strong.

Far stronger than most first-years.

Then—

The platform activated.

Blue mana lines spread across the circular structure beneath their feet as the academy transit system awakened with a low mechanical hum, streams of light forming around the edges before the platform slowly began ascending into the upper layers of the academy.

Aren looked down immediately.

"…I regret standing near the edge."

"You say that every time," Lyra replied.

"Because every time it feels like we're about to die."

Draven crossed his arms. "…Your survival instincts are selective."

"That is completely true."

The academy expanded beneath them as the platform continued rising higher.

From above, the scale became even more ridiculous.

Entire districts stretched across the academy grounds:

- combat sectors,

- magical research halls,

- library towers,

- artificer divisions,

- floating gardens,

- residential structures built directly into elevated stone formations.

And farther north—

Kael finally saw the upper academic sector properly.

Massive circular buildings connected by suspended bridges floated above layered mana foundations while enormous transparent barriers surrounded entire sections of the district. Streams of glowing runes moved constantly across the structures like living systems.

"…This place is insane," Aren whispered.

No one argued.

Because it was.

The platform eventually slowed before stopping near one of the upper bridges, and as the students stepped off, the atmosphere changed immediately.

Quieter.

More controlled.

Even the mana density felt different here.

Kael noticed it instantly.

The air itself carried heavier concentrations of refined mana, enough that every breath felt slightly sharper against his senses.

"…The upper sector uses concentrated mana circulation," Lyra explained quietly after noticing his expression.

Aren frowned. "…That sounds unhealthy."

"It improves advanced training efficiency."

"That somehow still sounds unhealthy."

A nearby voice interrupted them.

"You're the first-years?"

The group turned.

An instructor stood near the entrance of the bridge corridor, dark blue academy robes shifting lightly beneath the flowing mana currents surrounding the upper sector. Unlike most instructors below, this one carried no visible weapon.

But his presence alone felt precise enough to replace one.

"Yes," Lyra answered.

The instructor's gaze moved briefly across the group before stopping on Kael.

"…You were involved in Sector Fourteen."

Not a question.

Kael nodded once.

The instructor remained silent briefly before speaking again.

"Follow me."

No explanation.

No wasted words.

The group followed immediately.

The upper corridors of the academy looked entirely different from the lower divisions. The architecture here felt older, more refined, massive white stone pathways lined with floating rune formations and transparent mana streams flowing through the walls themselves.

Students passed occasionally.

But unlike first-years—

Upper students moved with purpose.

No loud conversations.

No unnecessary attention.

Just focus.

As they crossed one of the elevated hallways, Kael noticed several doors standing partially open nearby, revealing glimpses of advanced training chambers inside.

One room contained dozens of floating mana constructs rotating around a single student seated calmly at the center.

Another showed a magic user manipulating layered spell formations so complex Kael couldn't immediately follow the structure.

And farther ahead—

A sword strike exploded through one chamber hard enough to shake the corridor itself.

Aren stared openly. "…Okay. We're definitely not first-years anymore."

"You are," the instructor replied calmly while continuing forward.

Aren immediately straightened. "…Right. Of course. Humble first-years."

Lyra sighed softly.

Eventually, the instructor stopped before a massive circular doorway covered in silver runic engravings.

"The Specialized Integration Hall."

The doors slowly opened.

And for the first time since entering the academy—

Kael genuinely felt small.

The hall beyond was enormous.

Layered training platforms extended across multiple levels beneath a ceiling so high it disappeared into darkness while floating mana spheres illuminated the entire structure with pale silver light. Students trained across different sections simultaneously:

- swordsmen,

- magic users,

- beast-human fighters,

- elven archers,

- rune specialists.

All within the same massive integrated environment.

And every single one of them—

Felt strong.

Not ordinary academy students.

Elites.

Aren stared upward slowly. "…What exactly is this place?"

The instructor answered calmly.

"The academy's real training grounds."

Silence followed.

Because suddenly—

The gap between first-years and the upper academy became painfully clear.

And standing there beneath the endless structure of the Integration Hall—

Kael realized they had only just stepped beyond the beginning.
