Chapter 304 - Chapter 304: The Memory Before the Beginning

The crossroads remained silent.

Kael stood before Selene's open book, staring at the sentence that had appeared on its final page.

THE FIRST VOLUME OF THE CYCLE WAS NEVER THE BEGINNING.

IT WAS THE END OF SOMETHING OLDER.

The words slowly faded.

Selene turned another page.

Nothing.

Another.

Nothing.

The book had become silent again.

Kael looked toward the nine doors.

For the first time, they no longer looked like gateways to other worlds.

They looked like pieces of a much larger puzzle.

Aren broke the silence.

"So..."

Kael looked at him.

"We've spent all this time trying to understand the beginning."

"Yes."

"And now we've discovered that wasn't the beginning."

"Yes."

Aren sighed.

"That's inconvenient."

Lyra glanced at him.

"That's your concern?"

"It is a significant concern."

Despite everything, Kael smiled.

Then his expression became serious again.

"Selene."

She looked at him.

"Can the book tell us what existed before the cycle?"

"I don't know."

"Try."

She placed both hands against the book.

Her mana flowed through the pages.

The book resisted.

Selene's expression changed.

"It doesn't want to open."

"Why?"

"I don't know."

She pushed more power into it.

The pages began turning rapidly.

Hundreds.

Thousands.

Then they stopped.

A single page appeared.

There was no writing.

Only a symbol.

An empty circle.

Kael recognized it.

"The same symbol from the vision."

Selene nodded.

"Yes."

Seraphine approached.

"That's not a symbol."

Kael looked at her.

"What?"

"It's a boundary."

She pointed toward the circle.

"A mark indicating that something is outside the recorded system."

Kael stared at it.

"The outside."

"Exactly."

Caelum suddenly spoke.

"The eleventh light."

Everyone turned toward him.

He was standing several meters away, staring at the empty sky.

"It's gone."

Kael looked up.

The light had disappeared.

"But something remains."

"What?"

Caelum pointed toward the center of the crossroads.

A faint white line was forming.

It slowly shaped itself into a door.

Not one of the ancient doors.

This one was completely white.

There was no handle.

No lock.

Only a small inscription.

REMEMBER.

Kael walked toward it.

Elara followed.

"Don't open it."

Kael stopped.

"Why?"

"Because every time we've opened a door, something changed."

Kael looked at the inscription.

"This one isn't asking us to open it."

"Then what is it asking?"

"To remember."

He placed his hand against the door.

Nothing happened.

Then Elara stepped beside him.

She placed her hand over his.

The door opened.

There was no darkness behind it.

There was a room.

A simple room.

A wooden table.

Two chairs.

A window.

A small bed.

And a fireplace.

Kael stared.

"I know this place."

Elara looked around.

"So do I."

Aren stepped through.

"You've been here?"

Kael nodded.

"Before the Gardeners."

"Before the Dreamer."

"Before the first world."

He walked toward the table.

A small wooden toy sat there.

Kael picked it up.

A carved tree.

Eleven branches.

His fingers trembled.

"I remember this."

Elara looked at him.

"What?"

"I made this."

"When?"

"I don't know."

The room changed.

The walls disappeared.

A memory appeared.

Kael stood there.

But he wasn't the Kael everyone knew.

He was older.

Much older.

His hair was white.

His eyes carried countless years.

He was sitting beside another person.

The person was hidden in shadow.

Kael watched the memory.

The older version of himself spoke.

"We can't let the cycle continue."

The other figure replied,

"Then we need an ending."

"We need a reset."

Kael's expression changed.

A reset.

The word echoed through his mind.

The older Kael continued.

"The worlds will eventually collapse."

"The connections will become too complicated."

"The Gardeners will lose control."

"The Hollow will be born."

"The Connectors will repeat the same mistakes."

The shadowed figure nodded.

"Then what will you do?"

The older Kael looked toward the wooden tree.

"I'll erase the memory."

"Everyone's?"

"Mine first."

The figure became silent.

"You understand what that means?"

"Yes."

"You will forget everything."

"Yes."

"Even me?"

The older Kael looked at them.

A faint sadness appeared in his eyes.

"Especially you."

Kael watching the memory felt his chest tighten.

The shadowed figure stood.

"Then promise me something."

"What?"

"If the cycle ever reaches the end..."

"...remember me."

The older Kael smiled.

"I promise."

The memory ended.

The room returned.

Nobody spoke.

Kael slowly lowered the wooden tree.

"Who was that?"

Elara whispered,

"I don't know."

Kael turned toward her.

"You were there."

"I don't remember."

"But you knew this place."

Elara looked around.

"I've seen it in dreams."

Kael's expression hardened.

"Dreams?"

"Yes."

"For how long?"

"Three thousand years."

Kael froze.

"You've been dreaming about this room for three thousand years?"

Elara nodded.

"Every time I tried to remember the beginning."

"All I saw was this room."

"And you."

Kael looked down.

"What was the name of the person with me?"

Elara shook her head.

"I never saw their face."

The wooden tree in Kael's hand suddenly cracked.

A tiny voice came from it.

"Because you weren't supposed to."

Everyone froze.

The toy began glowing.

Then a figure emerged from the light.

Small.

Transparent.

A child.

Kael stared.

It was the same child from the first memory.

The first version of himself.

The child looked at him.

"You finally remembered."

Kael knelt.

"Who are you?"

The child smiled.

"You."

"Which version?"

"The one before the first."

Kael felt a chill.

"Before the first world?"

"Before the first cycle."

Kael stared.

"What was there?"

The child looked toward the white door.

"One world."

"Only one?"

"One."

"Who lived there?"

The child smiled sadly.

"You."

Kael's heart stopped.

"What?"

The child continued.

"You created the first world."

"You created the Dreamer."

"You created the Gardeners."

"You created the first Connector."

"You created the cycle."

Kael shook his head.

"No."

"You did."

"Why would I do that?"

"Because you wanted to escape."

"Escape what?"

The child looked toward him.

"Yourself."

The room began shaking.

Cracks appeared across the walls.

The white door began closing.

Kael reached toward the child.

"Wait!"

The child stepped backward.

"You can't remember everything yet."

"Why?"

"Because if you remember too quickly..."

The child smiled.

"...you'll become him again."

Kael froze.

"Who?"

The child pointed at him.

"You."

The room vanished.

Kael fell.

He landed on the floor of the crossroads.

Elara immediately grabbed him.

"Kael!"

He opened his eyes.

Everyone was around him.

Aren looked worried.

Lyra was holding her staff.

Selene's book was closed.

Caelum was trembling.

Kael sat up.

"What happened?"

Seraphine answered.

"You collapsed."

"For how long?"

"Three seconds."

Kael looked toward the white door.

It was gone.

"Did you see anything?"

Selene nodded.

"Enough."

"What?"

She opened her book.

The page was no longer blank.

A new title had appeared.

THE AGE BEFORE WORLDS.

Kael stared.

Below the title were three names.

THE FIRST CREATOR.

THE FIRST DREAMER.

THE FIRST CONNECTOR.

Kael pointed toward the last one.

"That's me."

Selene shook her head.

"No."

Kael looked at her.

"What?"

"The first Connector wasn't you."

"Then who?"

She turned the page.

A name appeared.

ELION.

Kael stared at it.

"Who is Elion?"

Nobody answered.

Then the World Tree spoke.

Its voice trembled.

"Your first name."

Kael's eyes widened.

"What?"

"Before Kael."

"Before the cycle."

"Before the worlds."

"You were called Elion."

Kael felt something inside his mind break open.

Memories rushed through him.

A vast white world.

A young man standing beneath a tree.

A woman made of light.

A child made of dreams.

A civilization beginning.

A war.

A betrayal.

A dying world.

And himself...

Standing at the center.

Not as a hero.

Not as a ruler.

As the creator.

Kael screamed.

Elara caught him.

"Stop!"

"I can't!"

The memories continued.

He saw the first world.

He saw the first civilization.

He saw the first connection.

And then...

He saw himself destroy it.

Not because it was evil.

Because it had failed.

He had created a perfect world.

And perfection had become a prison.

Everyone had been connected.

Everyone shared the same thoughts.

The same memories.

The same emotions.

There was no loneliness.

But there was also no freedom.

Kael had destroyed it.

Then he created the cycle.

A world where people could choose.

A world where separation existed.

A world where connection had to be earned.

A world where he could eventually return without remembering who he was.

Kael opened his eyes.

Tears were running down his face.

"I did this."

Elara held him tighter.

"You didn't know."

"I created everything."

"Not everything."

Kael looked at her.

"Then what did I create?"

She smiled sadly.

"Us."

Kael froze.

Elara placed her hand against his chest.

"You created the first world."

"But you didn't create me."

"I chose to stay."

Kael stared at her.

"Why?"

"Because someone had to remind you that you weren't alone."

The words struck him.

Kael closed his eyes.

For three thousand years...

Elara had waited.

Not for the hero.

Not for the Connector.

Not for the creator.

For him.

The person beneath all those names.

Kael.

The crossroads suddenly shook.

The nine doors opened simultaneously.

Every World Tree sent a pulse through the network.

Then a voice echoed.

Not one voice.

Millions.

Every connected person heard it.

THE CYCLE HAS BEEN REMEMBERED.

The sky cracked.

The eleventh light returned.

But this time it was closer.

Much closer.

And behind it...

Something appeared.

A gigantic silhouette.

Kael looked upward.

He couldn't see its face.

But he recognized the shape.

It was the same figure that had stood beside his older self in the memory.

The figure spoke.

"Elion."

Kael slowly stood.

The voice continued.

"You finally remembered."

Kael tightened his grip on his sword.

"I don't know who you are."

The silhouette laughed.

"You will."

The eleven branches in the sky began glowing.

One after another.

Then the figure spoke the words that froze everyone.

"I was the one who taught you how to create."

Kael stared.

"And I was the one who taught you how to destroy."

The silhouette raised its hand.

The entire network went dark.

Then one final sentence echoed through every world.

"Now..."

"...let me teach you how to end."
