Chapter 16 - CHAPTER 16: THE ESCAPE ROUTE

The corridor lights strobed red.

Sirens wailed without rhythm now—overlapping signals, system failures, emergency overrides all clashing at once.

The outpost was no longer under control.

It was under siege.

---

The creature moved through the hallway with terrifying precision.

Not rushing.

Not panicking.

---

Calculating.

---

Each step it took was deliberate, guided by a rapidly expanding understanding of its surroundings. Doors, pathways, ventilation shafts, power conduits—it saw everything as part of a system.

A system it was learning to master.

---

"…exit pathways…" it whispered.

---

Its eyes flicked upward.

---

It had already mapped the facility.

---

Faster than any human could.

---

---

Behind it—

---

Gunfire erupted.

---

"Contact ahead!" a soldier shouted.

---

The creature didn't turn.

---

Didn't hesitate.

---

Because it already knew.

---

---

It stepped to the side—

Just before the bullets reached it.

---

Perfect timing.

---

Perfect prediction.

---

---

The soldiers froze.

---

"How did it—?!"

---

Too late.

---

The creature moved.

---

A blur.

---

It closed the distance in less than a second.

---

Strikes.

---

Efficient.

---

Minimal.

---

Each one precise enough to disable.

Not waste energy.

---

Not waste motion.

---

---

The corridor fell silent again.

---

Bodies on the floor.

Weapons scattered.

---

---

"…resistance… decreasing…"

---

---

It stepped over them.

---

Continuing forward.

---

---

---

Elsewhere in the facility—

---

Kade slammed a fresh magazine into his rifle as he and Reyes sprinted down a parallel corridor.

---

"He's heading for an exit," Reyes said between breaths.

---

"Not 'he,'" Kade corrected sharply.

---

Reyes nodded quickly. "Right. It."

---

Kade glanced at the flickering lights.

---

"It's not running blind anymore. It knows this place better than we do."

---

Reyes pulled up a map on his wrist display.

---

"…I'm tracking movement through system logs. It's overriding access panels as it moves."

---

Kade frowned. "Meaning?"

---

Reyes looked up.

---

"It's choosing the fastest way out."

---

---

They turned a corner—

---

And nearly collided with Malik and a squad of armed soldiers.

---

"Status?" Malik barked.

---

"It's heading for an exit," Kade said.

---

"Which one?"

---

Reyes checked the display again.

---

His face dropped.

---

"…not the main gate."

---

Kade's eyes narrowed.

---

"Then where?"

---

Reyes swallowed.

---

"The airstrip."

---

---

Silence hit hard.

---

Malik cursed under his breath.

---

"If it reaches a transport…"

---

Kade finished the thought.

---

"It's gone."

---

---

And worse—

---

It wouldn't just escape.

---

It would spread.

---

---

Malik snapped into action.

---

"All units, converge on the airstrip! Lock down all transport systems!"

---

---

But even as the order went out—

---

Reyes's screen flickered.

---

Then glitched.

---

Then went dark.

---

---

"…too late…" Reyes whispered.

---

---

---

The creature reached a sealed security door.

---

Heavy.

Reinforced.

Locked.

---

It stopped.

---

Studied it.

---

---

"…barrier…"

---

---

Its hand lifted.

---

Not to strike.

---

But to interface.

---

---

Its fingers shifted slightly—

---

Restructuring.

---

Reforming.

---

---

Then—

---

It touched the panel.

---

---

The system responded instantly.

---

Not resisting.

---

Not rejecting.

---

---

Accepting.

---

---

The door unlocked.

---

---

"…access granted…"

---

---

It stepped through.

---

---

---

The airstrip stretched out ahead.

---

A long, flat expanse carved into the ice.

---

Floodlights illuminated the area.

---

Transport aircraft sat ready.

---

Engines cold.

---

But functional.

---

---

The creature stopped again.

---

Observing.

---

---

"…escape vector…"

---

---

It began walking toward the nearest aircraft.

---

---

---

Inside the facility—

---

Kade and the others burst through the final corridor leading to the airstrip.

---

And stopped.

---

---

Because they saw it.

---

---

Walking calmly across the open space.

---

Toward freedom.

---

---

Kade raised his weapon immediately.

---

"Take the shot!" Malik ordered.

---

---

Kade aimed.

---

Steady.

---

Focused.

---

---

But his finger didn't pull the trigger.

---

---

Reyes noticed.

---

"Kade—!"

---

---

Kade's voice dropped.

---

"…it looks like him."

---

---

That hesitation—

---

That one moment—

---

Was all it needed.

---

---

The creature stopped.

---

Turned slowly.

---

---

Its eyes locked onto them.

---

---

"…emotional interference…"

---

---

It understood.

---

---

And it used it.

---

---

"…inefficiency…"

---

---

Then—

---

It moved again.

---

Faster than ever.

---

---

Closing the distance to the aircraft.

---

---

Kade snapped out of it.

---

"NOW!"

---

---

Gunfire erupted.

---

Rounds tore across the ice.

---

---

But the creature—

---

Didn't stop.

---

---

Didn't slow.

---

---

Because it had already calculated this outcome.

---

---

Already adapted.

---

---

Already won that moment.

---

---

It reached the aircraft.

---

---

Placed its hand against the surface.

---

---

And began to learn.

---

---

Inside.

---

Systems.

---

Controls.

---

Escape.

---

---

Reyes's voice broke.

---

"If it gets that thing running…"

---

---

Kade didn't answer.

---

---

Because he knew.

---

---

This wasn't just an escape anymore.

---

---

This was the beginning of something far worse.
