Chapter 17 - CHAPTER 17: TAKEOFF

The Arctic night stretched endlessly over the airstrip.

Floodlights cut through the darkness, illuminating the frozen runway and the transport aircraft that sat waiting like a gateway to the rest of the world.

And standing at its side—

Was the end of everything.

---

The creature placed its hand against the aircraft's hull.

Still.

Focused.

---

Its fingers shifted slightly—microscopic adjustments, structures forming and reforming beneath the surface.

---

"…interface…"

---

Inside the aircraft—

Systems flickered.

---

Power surged.

---

The cockpit screens came alive one by one.

---

---

"NO!" Reyes shouted.

---

Kade didn't hesitate this time.

---

"Open fire!"

---

Gunfire exploded across the airstrip.

---

Rounds slammed into the creature's back, shoulders, legs—

---

But it didn't fall.

---

Didn't even turn.

---

Because it was already adapting.

---

---

Its outer layer hardened again—

But not just to resist bullets.

---

To absorb impact.

---

To reduce force.

---

To ignore damage.

---

---

"…irrelevant…" it whispered.

---

---

Kade gritted his teeth. "Then we change the rules."

---

He grabbed a grenade from his vest—

Pulled the pin—

And hurled it.

---

---

The explosion rocked the airstrip.

---

Fire and debris burst outward, forcing everyone back.

---

---

When the smoke cleared—

---

The creature stood there.

---

Damaged.

---

But not destroyed.

---

---

Its body shifted.

---

Repaired.

---

Improved.

---

---

Reyes's voice trembled. "It's not just surviving… it's optimizing…"

---

---

The aircraft engines suddenly whined to life.

---

Low at first—

Then rising.

---

---

Kade's eyes widened.

---

"Tell me that's not what I think it is."

---

---

Reyes checked the nearby terminal.

---

And froze.

---

"…it's starting the engines."

---

---

Malik shouted, "All units—disable that aircraft NOW!"

---

---

Soldiers spread out, firing, moving, trying to close the distance.

---

But the creature moved faster.

---

It climbed onto the aircraft—

Effortless.

---

Natural.

---

---

"…escape confirmed…"

---

---

Kade sprinted forward.

---

Ignoring the gunfire.

Ignoring the danger.

---

---

"Not happening!" he roared.

---

---

He leapt—

Grabbing onto the side of the aircraft just as the engines roared louder.

---

---

Reyes's eyes widened.

---

"Kade, don't—!"

---

---

Too late.

---

---

Kade pulled himself up onto the wing, gripping tightly as the aircraft began to vibrate.

---

---

The creature turned toward him.

---

Calm.

---

Almost curious.

---

---

"…persistence…"

---

---

Kade glared at it.

---

"Yeah," he growled.

---

"I learned from the best."

---

---

For a split second—

---

Something flickered in the creature's eyes.

---

---

A memory.

---

---

Voss standing in the collapsing tunnel.

Refusing to move.

---

---

Then—

Gone.

---

---

The creature lunged.

---

---

Kade barely reacted in time, rolling across the wing as the thing struck where he had been.

---

---

They clashed.

---

Not like before.

---

Not soldier versus unknown.

---

---

This time—

---

It was personal.

---

---

Kade swung—

Hard.

---

The creature blocked—

Adapting instantly.

---

Countered—

Faster.

---

Stronger.

---

---

Kade grunted as the blow landed, nearly knocking him off the wing.

---

---

Below—

---

Reyes ran toward the aircraft, heart pounding.

---

"Malik!" he shouted. "We need to shut it down remotely!"

---

---

Malik grabbed a radio.

---

"Control, cut power to the runway! Kill everything!"

---

---

Static.

---

Then—

---

"…unable to comply…"

---

---

Reyes's face dropped.

---

"It's locked us out…"

---

---

Above—

---

The engines roared louder.

---

The aircraft began to move.

---

---

Kade tightened his grip, refusing to fall.

---

---

"You're not leaving," he said through clenched teeth.

---

---

The creature tilted its head.

---

---

"…you cannot stop progression…"

---

---

Kade smirked slightly.

---

"Maybe not."

---

---

He reached into his vest.

---

Pulled out another grenade.

---

---

"…but I can slow it down."

---

---

The creature's eyes shifted.

---

Calculating.

---

---

Then—

---

It moved.

---

Faster than before.

---

---

Its hand shot forward—

Grabbing Kade's wrist.

---

---

Stopping him.

---

---

"…ineffective strategy…"

---

---

Kade's grin widened.

---

---

"Yeah?"

---

---

He dropped the grenade.

---

---

Right between them.

---

---

Time slowed.

---

---

The creature reacted—

But not fast enough.

---

---

The explosion tore across the wing.

---

---

Fire.

---

Force.

---

Shock.

---

---

Kade was thrown clear—

---

Slamming onto the icy ground below.

---

---

The aircraft rocked violently.

---

---

The creature staggered—

---

Its form destabilizing—

---

For the first time since reaching the airstrip.

---

---

Reyes saw it.

---

Hope surged.

---

"That worked!"

---

---

But then—

---

The creature stood again.

---

---

Damaged.

---

But adapting.

---

---

"…learning…"

---

---

The engines roared even louder.

---

---

The aircraft began to accelerate.

---

---

Kade groaned, trying to move.

---

"Reyes…"

---

---

Reyes ran to him.

---

"I've got you!"

---

---

Kade grabbed his arm.

---

"Don't let it leave…"

---

---

Reyes looked at the aircraft.

---

Then back at Kade.

---

---

Fear.

---

Determination.

---

---

"…I won't."

---

---

The aircraft sped down the runway.

---

Faster.

---

Closer to takeoff.

---

---

And inside—

---

The creature took control.

---

---

For the first time—

---

It wasn't just escaping.

---

---

It was advancing.
