Chapter 5 - falling without realizing

After that night in the rain…

Things changed.

Not suddenly.

Not in a way anyone else could notice.

But for Amara and Kieran, something had shifted.

They didn't talk about what he said.

They didn't mention the warning.

They didn't try to define anything.

But somehow…

They grew closer.

It showed in small ways.

The kind of things that were easy to ignore—but impossible to forget.

Like how he started waiting for her after lectures.

Not always standing close.

Not always calling her name.

Just… there.

Leaning against a wall, scrolling through his phone, pretending like it wasn't intentional.

And somehow, she always noticed.

"You're early again," he said one afternoon as she walked toward the hallway.

Amara raised an eyebrow.

"And you're here again."

He smirked slightly.

"Coincidence."

She shook her head.

"You don't believe in coincidence."

That made him pause.

Then he smiled—softly this time.

"Maybe I'm starting to."

Moments like that became normal.

Too normal.

They started walking together.

Not planned.

Not discussed.

It just… happened.

Sometimes they talked.

Sometimes they didn't.

But even in silence, it felt like enough.

And that was what scared Amara the most.

Because she was comfortable.

Too comfortable.

One evening, they sat together outside the lecture hall, waiting for their next class.

The sun was low, casting a warm glow across the campus.

Students passed by, laughing, talking, living their lives.

But for a moment…

It felt like it was just the two of them.

"You're smiling," Kieran said suddenly.

Amara blinked.

"I am not."

"You are," he insisted, watching her closely.

She quickly looked away.

"It's nothing."

He leaned slightly closer.

"See? That's the problem."

"What is?"

"You always act like things don't matter."

That caught her off guard.

"And you act like everything doesn't matter," she replied.

He didn't deny it.

For a moment, they just looked at each other.

And something unspoken passed between them again.

"You should stop doing this," Kieran said quietly.

Amara frowned.

"Doing what?"

"This," he said, gesturing slightly between them.

"Getting used to me."

Her heart skipped.

"I'm not—" she started.

"You are," he interrupted gently.

"And you don't even realize it."

Silence.

Because deep down…

She knew he was right.

"I told you already," he continued. "I don't stay."

Amara swallowed softly.

"I remember."

"Then why are you still here?"

That question felt heavier than it sounded.

She didn't answer immediately.

Didn't know how to.

Because the truth?

She didn't have a logical reason.

She just…

Didn't want to leave.

"I don't know," she said finally.

Kieran looked away, running a hand through his hair.

"That's not a good answer."

"It's an honest one."

He let out a quiet breath.

And for a moment, he looked… conflicted.

Like part of him wanted to walk away.

And another part didn't.

"Amara," he said softly.

The way he said her name this time felt different.

Careful.

Almost fragile.

She looked at him.

And for a second…

Everything else faded.

"I'm not someone you should get attached to," he said.

Her chest tightened.

"Maybe I'm not trying to," she replied.

But even as she said it…

She knew it wasn't completely true.

Because attachment doesn't ask for permission.

It just happens.

That night, Amara lay in bed, staring at her phone.

His messages were simple.

Short.

Nothing special.

"Did you get back safely?"

"Don't forget your assignment."

But somehow…

They meant more than they should.

She placed her phone on her chest, closing her eyes.

This wasn't part of her plan.

This wasn't what she wanted.

And yet…

She couldn't stop it.

Meanwhile, Kieran sat in his room, staring at their last conversation.

His expression unreadable.

He knew what was happening.

He saw it clearly.

And that was exactly the problem.

Because for the first time in a long time…

He didn't feel in control.

And worse?

He didn't want to be.
