Chapter 5 - CHAPTER 5 — Too Close

Elena didn't go home.

Not immediately.

She stayed in the building.

On purpose.

She didn't want to look weak.

Didn't want to run.

She sat in the empty lounge on the 28th floor.

City lights flickered outside.

Her mind replayed everything.

The meeting.

His voice.

"You are."

Her jaw tightened.

"I don't care what he thinks," she whispered.

Lie.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Controlled.

Familiar.

She didn't turn.

Didn't need to.

"You're still here."

His voice.

Close.

Too close.

Elena didn't look at him.

"I work here now."

A pause.

Then—

"Not like this."

She turned.

Finally.

Adrian stood a few steps away.

Jacket off.

Tie loosened slightly.

Still controlled.

Still dangerous.

"I decide how I work," she said.

His eyes moved over her.

Slow.

Careful.

Like he was reading something.

"No," he said.

"You don't."

She stood.

Closed the distance.

Not afraid.

Not backing down.

"You don't control everything."

His gaze dropped slightly.

Then back up.

"I control what matters."

Silence.

Tight.

Charged.

A man walked past behind them.

Mid-30s.

Confident.

Looked at Elena.

Then again.

Longer this time.

Adrian noticed.

Of course he did.

He always noticed.

"Miss Carter," the man said with a smile.

"I don't think we've met."

Elena opened her mouth to answer—

"She's with me."

Adrian's voice cut in.

Cold.

Sharp.

Final.

The man stopped.

His smile faded slightly.

"Oh… I see."

He didn't.

But he understood enough.

"Good night," the man said quickly.

And left.

Silence returned.

But heavier now.

Different.

Elena turned slowly.

"What was that?"

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

His eyes were still on the hallway.

Where the man had disappeared.

Then—

"Nothing."

She stepped closer.

"No. That wasn't nothing."

A pause.

Then—

"I don't like people looking at what's mine."

Her breath caught.

Just slightly.

"I'm not yours," she said.

Quieter this time.

His gaze shifted back to her.

Locked.

Unmoving.

"You signed the contract."

Again.

Always that.

"That doesn't mean you own me."

A step closer.

Now they were too close.

No space left.

"It means I decide who gets close to you."

Her heart beat faster.

This was different.

Not just control.

Something else.

"Why?" she asked.

Soft.

Real.

A pause.

Longer this time.

His eyes moved across her face.

Studying.

Thinking.

Calculating.

"Because I don't share," he said.

That landed.

Deep.

Elena swallowed.

Then forced a small smile.

Challenging.

Dangerous.

"Then you're going to have a problem," she said.

His eyes darkened.

Slowly.

"Is that a challenge?"

"Yes."

Silence.

Heavy.

Electric.

He reached out.

Slowly.

Her breath stopped.

His hand stopped just before touching her face.

Not touching.

But close enough.

Too close.

"Careful," he said quietly.

Her voice didn't break.

"I'm not afraid of you."

A pause.

Then—

"You should be."

Her heart raced.

But she didn't move.

Didn't step back.

"Why?" she asked.

His gaze didn't move.

"Because the more you fight me…"

A slight step closer.

Now she could feel his breath.

"…the more I want you."

Silence.

Total.

Her chest rose slowly.

She felt it.

That pull.

Dangerous.

Unwanted.

Real.

She stepped back first.

Breaking it.

"This isn't part of the contract," she said.

His expression didn't change.

But something shifted.

"Everything about you is part of the contract."

Her stomach tightened.

"No," she said.

Firm.

Clear.

"I decide that."

Silence.

Then—

A small smile.

Dangerous.

"Good," he said.

That wasn't what she expected.

"I don't want easy."

Her heart skipped.

"I want resistance."

That was worse.

Elena turned.

Walked away.

Fast.

Before he could say more.

Before she could feel more.

But just before she reached the door—

"Five years ago," he said.

She stopped.

Frozen.

"You laughed."

Her breath caught.

"I didn't—"

"You did."

Silence.

"You looked at me," he continued,

"And decided I wasn't worth your attention."

Her mind raced.

That memory again.

That night.

That mistake.

"I didn't know who you were," she said quietly.

"That's the point."

She turned slowly.

His eyes were colder now.

Sharper.

"I remember everything," he said.

A pause.

Then—

"And now…"

He stepped closer again.

One step.

Enough.

"…you're going to remember me."

Her heart pounded.

This wasn't just a contract.

This was personal.

And she had just become the center of it.
