Elena didn't move.
The photo was still in her hand.
Her.
Five years ago.
Laughing.
Looking away.
Looking at him…
Like he didn't matter.
"You shouldn't be looking at that."
His voice.
Low.
Dangerous.
Different.
She turned slowly.
Her heart was already racing.
Adrian stood by the door.
Still.
But not controlled.
Not like before.
His eyes were darker.
Sharper.
Unstable.
"You've been keeping this?" she asked.
Her voice was quieter now.
Not angry.
Not challenging.
Just… real.
Silence.
He walked toward her.
Slow.
Measured.
But something was off.
"Yes."
No denial.
Her chest tightened.
"For five years?"
A pause.
Then—
"Yes."
The room felt smaller.
"Why?" she asked.
His gaze didn't move.
"Because it was the moment everything changed."
Her breath caught.
"That's not normal."
"I told you," he said quietly.
"I'm not."
Silence.
She placed the photo back on the desk.
Carefully.
"You built all of this…" she said slowly,
"…because of one moment?"
A pause.
Then—
"No."
Her eyes lifted.
"I built it because I needed control," he said.
A step closer.
"And you were the first person I couldn't control."
Her heart skipped.
"That doesn't justify this."
"No."
Silence.
"But it explains it."
Before she could answer—
The door burst open.
Hard.
Both of them turned.
A man stood there.
Security.
Breathing fast.
"Mr. Wolfe—"
Adrian's voice cut through.
"What?"
"There's a situation downstairs."
A pause.
"What kind of situation?"
The guard hesitated.
Then—
"Someone is asking for Miss Carter."
Elena's stomach dropped.
"What?" she whispered.
Adrian didn't move.
"Who?"
The guard swallowed.
"He didn't give a name."
Silence.
"He said… if she doesn't come down…"
A pause.
"…he'll make a scene."
Everything changed.
The air.
The tension.
The control.
Adrian's expression went cold.
Completely.
"Where is he?"
"Lobby."
A beat.
"Keep him there."
"Yes, sir."
The guard left.
Fast.
Silence.
Heavy.
Elena looked at him.
"I don't know who that is."
"I know."
That answer came too fast.
Her heart skipped.
"What does that mean?"
A pause.
Then—
"He's not here for you."
Her chest tightened.
"Then why—"
"He's here because of you."
That was worse.
Adrian moved.
Fast now.
Not slow.
Not controlled.
Different.
He grabbed his jacket.
"We're leaving."
"What?"
"Now."
She didn't argue.
Not this time.
Something was wrong.
Very wrong.
They moved quickly.
Down the private elevator.
Silent.
Too silent.
Elena's heart pounded.
"What's happening?" she asked.
A pause.
Then—
"You were followed yesterday."
Her breath caught.
"What?"
"I should have expected it."
That chilled her.
"Expected what?"
He didn't answer.
The elevator opened.
Private parking.
Empty.
Dark.
He walked fast.
She followed.
"Adrian—"
"Stay close."
His voice was sharp now.
Not a request.
An order.
They reached the car.
The driver was already there.
Door open.
"Get in."
She did.
No hesitation.
He got in after her.
Door slammed.
"Drive."
The car moved instantly.
Fast.
Elena's chest rose.
"Tell me what's going on."
Silence.
Then—
"You're not safe here."
Her heart dropped.
"That's not an answer."
"It's the only one you need right now."
She turned to him.
"This is because of you, isn't it?"
A pause.
Then—
"Yes."
Her stomach twisted.
"What did you do?"
His gaze didn't move.
"Nothing."
She let out a breath.
Then—
"Yet."
That word hit hard.
Silence filled the car.
Heavy.
Tight.
Elena looked away.
City lights blurred past.
Faster.
Everything was moving too fast.
"This wasn't part of the contract," she said quietly.
A pause.
Then—
"Everything about you is."
Her chest tightened again.
"I didn't agree to this."
"You agreed to me."
Silence.
She turned back.
Anger rising.
Fear mixing with it.
"You don't get to drag me into your problems."
His eyes finally shifted.
Locked on hers.
Cold.
"You're already in."
Her breath caught.
"I don't want to be."
A pause.
Then—
"It doesn't matter."
Silence.
The car slowed.
Then stopped.
Elena frowned.
"Where are we?"
He didn't answer immediately.
Then—
"My place."
Her heart skipped.
"No."
"Yes."
"I'm not staying with you."
"You are tonight."
Silence.
Her hands clenched.
"That wasn't part of the deal."
A pause.
Then—
"I'm adjusting the deal."
Her breath caught.
"You can't do that."
"I just did."
The door opened.
He stepped out.
Waited.
For her.
Elena hesitated.
Then—
Slowly—
She stepped out too.
The building in front of her was massive.
Dark.
Private.
Isolated.
She turned to him.
"This is insane."
He stepped closer.
Too close.
"This is necessary."
Her heart raced.
"Why?"
A pause.
Then—
His voice dropped.
"Because if anyone tries to touch you…"
A step closer.
"…they'll go through me first."
Her breath caught.
That wasn't comfort.
That was a warning.
She stared at him.
This wasn't just control anymore.
This was protection.
Dark.
Dangerous.
Possessive.
And the worst part…
She didn't know which one scared her more.
