Chapter 30 - CHAPTER 30 — Stay Away From Me

The silence didn't break.

It ended.

Adrian stepped back.

First.

That was all it took.

Distance.

Real this time.

Not hesitation.

Not control.

Decision.

Elena felt it immediately.

Something changed.

Not tension.

Finality.

"You should go."

Her breath caught.

"What?"

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

"You should go back to your place."

Silence.

That hit harder than anything else.

"You said I wasn't safe."

"I'll handle it."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one you're getting."

Her chest tightened.

"You don't get to do that."

A pause.

Then—

"Yes, I do."

Again.

But this time…

It didn't feel like control.

It felt like distance.

She stepped closer.

"No."

A beat.

"I'm not leaving."

His gaze didn't move.

"You are."

Silence.

Her heart started racing.

"Why?"

A pause.

Then—

"Because this stops now."

That word again.

Stop.

Her chest tightened.

"You don't mean that."

"Yes, I do."

Silence.

She shook her head.

"No."

A step closer.

"You don't get to decide that for both of us."

His jaw tightened.

"I'm not deciding for you."

A pause.

"I'm removing myself."

That was worse.

Much worse.

Her breath caught.

"That's the same thing."

"No."

"It's not."

Silence.

She looked at him.

Really looked.

At the control.

At the restraint.

At the distance.

And it hurt.

More than anything else before.

"You're pushing me away."

"Yes."

That honesty again.

That hurt more than a lie.

Her chest rose sharply.

"Why?"

A long pause.

Then—

"Because I don't stop."

Silence.

"You already said that."

"And you didn't listen."

She stepped closer.

"I don't care."

That was real.

Too real.

His gaze darkened.

"You should."

"No."

Silence.

Her voice dropped.

"I'm not afraid of you."

A pause.

Then—

"You should be afraid of what happens when I stop holding back."

Her heart raced.

"But you're not holding back anymore."

A beat.

"That's the problem."

Silence.

She stepped back.

Not by choice.

Because something in his voice…

Felt final.

"You're serious," she whispered.

"Yes."

Her chest tightened.

"And you expect me to just walk away?"

A pause.

Then—

"Yes."

Silence.

That broke something.

Inside her.

She laughed.

Soft.

Without humor.

"That's not how this works."

His gaze didn't move.

"It is now."

She shook her head.

"No."

Her voice steadier now.

"I'm not walking away from something real."

A pause.

Then—

"It's not real."

That hit.

Hard.

Her breath caught.

"That's not true."

Silence.

His voice dropped.

"It's temporary."

That hurt.

More than anything else.

Her chest tightened.

"You don't believe that."

A pause.

Then—

"I do."

But he didn't.

She could see it.

She stepped closer.

One last time.

"You're lying."

His gaze didn't move.

"No."

Silence.

Her heart was breaking.

Slowly.

Quietly.

"Then say it again," she said.

A pause.

Then—

"It's temporary."

Her chest tightened.

Because this time…

It sounded like he was trying to convince himself.

She stepped back.

Finally.

This time—

For real.

"Fine," she said.

Her voice steady.

Even if she wasn't.

"I'll go."

Silence.

That changed everything.

His expression didn't change.

But something in his eyes did.

Just for a second.

"Good."

That word hurt.

More than anything.

She turned.

Walked toward the door.

Each step slower than the last.

She didn't look back.

Didn't stop.

Didn't say anything else.

But just before she reached the door—

His voice came.

Quiet.

"Elena."

She froze.

Just for a second.

But she didn't turn.

And that…

Was worse.
