Chapter 30 - Chapter 30: The Distance That Didn’t Hold

Night settled quietly over the palace.

The kind of quiet that didn't press down on you But wrapped around everything gently, like the world itself had decided to rest.

Inside the chamber-

The lights had been dimmed.

The curtains drawn just enough to let the faint silver glow of the moon slip through.

Lyra lay on one side of the bed.

Still

Awake

Kael was on the other

Facing away.

His breathing steady.

Even.

Like he had already fallen asleep.

The distance between them wasn't much.

Not with a bed like this.

Not with the bond that refused to stay quiet.

Lyra closed her eyes.

Tried to sleep.

Tried to ignore the unfamiliar tension coiling slowly beneath her skin.

At first-

It was nothing.

Just warmth.

Then-

It changed.

Her breath faltered slightly as a strange heat began to spread through her, subtle at first, like a quiet ripple beneath the surface.

She frowned.

Shifting slightly against the sheets.

"What is this.

The air felt heavier now.

Not suffocating.

But thick.

Charged.

And then-

She noticed it.

His scent

It wasn't something she had paid attention to before.

Not like this.

But now-

It was everywhere.

Deep.

Warm

Faintly sharp-

Like something dangerous hidden beneath calm.

Lyra inhaled without meaning to

And immediately-

Her body reacted.

The heat deepened.

Spread.

Settled somewhere low and unfamiliar, making her grip the edge of the blanket slightly.

"This is just the bond," she whispered to herself. But even she didn't sound convinced.

Across from her-

Kael didn't move

But he wasn't asleep.

Not anymore.

The moment her scent changed-

He noticed.

Of course he did.

It was subtle at first.

Then-

It wasn't.

Something softer

Sweeter.

Warmer.

It filled the space between them, drifting slowly, wrapping around him before he could block it out.

Kael's jaw tightened slightly.

His breathing remained steady.

Controlled.

But every instinct in him-

Was suddenly awake.

He kept his eyes closed.

Didn't move.

Didn't react

Because he knew exactly what this was.

The bond.

The proximity.

The effect of his presence on her.

And if he acknowledged it-

If he tumed-

If he gave in even a little-

It wouldn't stop there.

So he stayed still.

Silent

Pretending.

Behind him-

Lyra shifted again.

Restless.

The heat wasn't fading. It was growing. Slowly. Relentlessly.

"...Kael."

Her voice was softer now.

Uncertain.

He didn't answer.

Lyra frowned.

"...Are you asleep?"

Silence.

Kael remained still.

His control tightening with every passing second

"...Of course you are," she murmured.

But something in her tone-Said she didn't fully believe it.

Another moment passed.

Then-She turned slightly. Facing him now. Even if he couldn't see it.

The distance between them felt smaller.

Too small.

Lyra hesitated. Then-Slowly-She shifted closer.

Not much. Just enough.

Kael felt it instantly.

The space between them closed.

The warmth intensified.

His hand tightened slightly against the sheets.

Don't move.

Her scent was stronger now.

Closer. Wrapped around him in a way that made it harder to think. Harder to stay still.

Lyra exhaled softly.

"...It's too warm..."

Kael swallowed slowly. His control slipping-Just slightly.

But still-He didn't move.

Didn't turn. Didn't respond.

Because he knew-The moment he did-Everything would change.

And he wasn't sure-

If she wanted that.

Or if she would hate him for it.

So instead-

He stayed exactly where he was.

Silent.

Still.

Holding himself back.

Even when every instinct in him-Told him not to.

And behind him-

Lyra closed her eyes again.

Still restless.

Still unaware-

Of just how close he was to breaking.
