Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: The One Who Should Have Disappeared

The quiet of the street lingered as they continued walking, the earlier tension between them settling into something more controlled, though no less present. The evening had deepened, and the faint glow of streetlights stretched long shadows across the pavement. The air carried a chill that seemed ordinary at first, yet beneath it was something else, something subtle, something waiting.

Lucien glanced at Cara briefly before speaking, his tone calm but deliberate. "Where are you headed from here?"

Cara met his gaze for a moment before answering, "Home."

Lucien nodded once, as if confirming a decision already made. "I'll walk you there."

Cara paused slightly, her eyes narrowing just a fraction. "That's unnecessary."

"It's late," Lucien replied evenly, his gaze steady. "And the area isn't entirely predictable."

Cara let out a quiet breath, almost amused. "You make it sound dangerous."

Lucien did not look away. "I prefer not to assume otherwise."

Cara considered refusing. Trust was not something she gave easily, especially not to someone who observed too much and revealed too little. Yet before she could answer, something shifted.

It began as a faint disturbance in the air, barely noticeable at first, like a ripple beneath still water. Cara's steps slowed instinctively, her attention sharpening as the sensation grew stronger. It was not physical, not something that could be seen immediately, but it pressed against her awareness with a cold, suffocating weight.

She stopped.

Lucien noticed immediately, his expression tightening just slightly. "What is it?"

Cara did not answer right away. Her gaze had already shifted beyond him, scanning the dimly lit street as her senses stretched outward. The presence was unmistakable now.

"It's…" she began, her voice quieter, more focused. "Something's coming."

Lucien's gaze sharpened. "You feel it."

It was not a question.

The air grew heavier, the silence thickening as though the world itself had paused. Then, from the shadows ahead, something moved.

At first, it was only a distortion, darkness that did not align with the surrounding light, a presence that seemed to absorb everything around it. Slowly, it took form, though not completely. A figure emerged, cloaked in shadow, its shape unstable, its face hidden beneath a hood that revealed nothing.

It did not belong.

Lucien's posture shifted subtly, his attention locking onto it with a sharpness that had not been there before. For the first time, there was clear alertness in his gaze.

The figure stepped forward. Its movements were soundless then it spoke.

"You are still alive."

The voice echoed unnaturally, layered and distorted, impossible to define as either male or female. It carried no warmth, no humanity, only something hollow and distant.

Cara's eyes narrowed, her expression sharpening as the presence intensified.

"You should have disappeared."

The words struck with an unnatural weight, settling into the air between them.

Before either of them could respond, the figure raised its hand. Darkness gathered instantly, forming into something unnatural, a mass of black fire that did not illuminate but instead consumed the light around it.

Then it attacked.

The flames surged toward them in a violent arc, twisting unnaturally as they cut through the air. Cara moved without hesitation. Her hand lifted, her reaction immediate and precise. Heat surged through her, responding to her will with familiar obedience. Fire burst outward, vivid and alive, shaping itself into a barrier that flared between them and the incoming attack. The contrast was striking her flames bright and controlled against the consuming darkness that collided against it.

The impact rang sharply through the air.

For a brief moment, the two forces clashed, light against void, heat against something that devoured existence itself. Then the black fire broke apart, dissipating as Cara's shield held firm.

Silence returned.

Lucien's gaze flickered toward her, and for the first time, his composure shifted, not in alarm, but in recognition. The glow of her magic reflected faintly in his eyes, controlled, refined, unmistakably powerful.

Cara did not look at him.

Her attention remained fixed on the figure ahead, her expression calm but sharper now, more dangerous.

The figure tilted its head slowly, as if observing her. A low sound echoed from it, something between amusement and curiosity. "Interesting."

Cara stepped forward.

Her hand lifted again, and this time the flames responded differently. The air around her heated rapidly as her control sharpened, the fire gathering into a concentrated point in her palm. It swirled tightly, compressing into something far more precise than the earlier shield then she released it. The blast shot forward in a focused arc, fast and controlled, cutting through the space between them with deliberate precision. It was not wild or reckless, it carried the weight of mastery, restrained yet powerful.

The figure reacted, but not fast enough. Before the attack could fully connect, Lucien moved. The air around him distorted subtly, space bending in a way that was almost imperceptible yet undeniable. The distance between Cara's attack and its target collapsed in an instant, the trajectory shifting unnaturally as if pulled forward by an unseen force. The flames struck. For a brief moment, the figure was engulfed. Then it laughed.

The sound echoed through the street, hollow and distorted, layered with something that did not belong to the world around them.

The fire dissipated. The figure remained.

Unaffected or at least not as affected as it should have been.

"Your time will come," it said, the voice twisting unnaturally. "You will disappear."

A pause followed, heavier than before.

"And you are not alone."

The words lingered, carrying a weight that neither of them could ignore.

Then, without warning, the figure vanished.

There was no movement, no transition. It simply ceased to exist, as though it had never been there at all.

The street fell silent once more. The oppressive weight lifted, the unnatural cold fading into the background as though it had never existed.

Cara stood still, her gaze fixed on the empty space. Her flames had already disappeared, her control retracting as quickly as it had surfaced. Beside her, Lucien remained motionless. For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Cara turned. Their eyes met. There was no need for words. They had both seen it. They had both acted and neither of them was willing to explain.

Lucien's gaze held hers, steady, analytical, though something deeper had shifted beneath the surface. Cara's expression remained composed, but her eyes were sharper now, more aware, more certain.

The silence stretched between them, heavy with unspoken understanding. Neither questioned and neither explained because doing so would mean revealing too much and neither of them was ready for that.

The night no longer felt quiet. It no longer felt safe. Something had found them. And it knew more than it should.

Cara exhaled slowly, her composure settling once more into calm precision, though her thoughts remained sharp. Lucien glanced once more at the empty space ahead, his mind already moving, already calculating.

This was no longer coincidence.

Whatever that thing was. It had been looking for her and now…

It had found them both.
