Chapter 32 - The Vow of the Heart

The cathedral was filled with the scent of white lilies and expensive cologne, but for Xavier, the world was silent as the heavy oak doors swung open. He stood at the altar, no longer the man in the borrowed suit from the first day of the contract. He was the man who had faced down the Vane Empire's greatest enemy and won.

Seraphina appeared at the end of the aisle. She wasn't wearing a business suit or a "contract" dress. She wore a gown of ivory silk that flowed behind her like a river of moonlight. When she reached him, her hand trembling slightly as she placed it in his, Xavier leaned in.

"You look like you're about to take over the world," he whispered.

"I already have," she replied, her eyes bright. "I have you."

The priest spoke of ancient vows, but Xavier and Seraphina weren't listening to the script. They were looking at each other—really looking—at the scars and the strength they had found in one another. When it was time for the rings, Xavier didn't just slide the diamond onto her finger. He held her hand firmly.

"I, Xavier, take you, Seraphina, not because of a paper or a debt, but because you are the only person who has ever seen the man behind the shield. I promise to be your strength when you are tired, and your peace when the world is at war."

Seraphina's voice was clear as she responded. "I, Seraphina, take you, Xavier. I spent my life building walls to keep people out, but you didn't just climb them—you tore them down. You are my husband, my partner, and my home."

As they were declared husband and wife, the applause of the city's elite broke out, but they didn't hear it. They were lost in a kiss that was finally, completely real.

Chapter 33: The Ghost of Lagos

The honeymoon was supposed to be a week of peace on a private island in the Maldives. The water was turquoise, the sand was like powdered sugar, and for the first time in months, Seraphina's phone was turned off.

They were sitting on the deck of their overwater villa, the sunset painting the sky in shades of violet and orange, when a small boat approached the dock. A man stepped out, wearing a simple linen shirt and a familiar, dark look in his eyes.

"Xavier," the man called out. "You've grown soft in your palace of gold."

Xavier stood up instantly, his body tensing into a combat stance. "Kalu? What are you doing here? I settled my debts in Lagos years ago."

"The money is settled, yes," Kalu said, stepping onto the deck. "But the people you left behind aren't happy that you've become the pet of a billionaire. They sent me to remind you that you don't just walk away from the streets."

Seraphina stepped up beside Xavier, her hand resting on his arm. She didn't look afraid. "My husband doesn't belong to the streets, Kalu. And he certainly isn't anyone's pet. If you're here for money, name your price and leave. If you're here for him, you'll have to go through me."

Kalu laughed, a cold, dry sound. "The Ice Queen has teeth. I like that. But I'm not here for money. I'm here because Silas Vane reached out to us from his prison cell. He has a message: the war isn't over just because you have a ring on your finger."

Xavier stepped in front of Seraphina. "Tell Silas that every time he sends someone, I'll send them back in pieces. And tell the people in Lagos that if they touch my life again, I'll buy their entire neighborhood and turn it into a parking lot. Leave. Now."

Kalu looked at the fire in Xavier's eyes and the steel in Seraphina's gaze. He realized he was outnumbered, not by men, but by a bond he couldn't break. He stepped back into the boat and disappeared into the twilight.
