Chapter 7 - The First Misstep

Chapter 7: The First Misstep

---

The thing that dropped—

Didn't roar.

Didn't warn.

---

It just came down.

---

Aren barely saw it.

A blur of movement. A flash of something pale and sharp.

---

"Nara—!"

---

She moved first.

---

Her spear came up in a single motion—

---

CLANG.

---

The impact rang through the narrow path.

---

The creature rebounded slightly, landing a few steps away.

---

Aren finally saw it clearly.

---

Long limbs.

Too long.

---

Its body clung low to the ground, joints bending in ways that didn't feel natural. Its skin was rough, almost stone-like, but thin cracks ran across it—faintly glowing from within.

---

Its eyes locked onto them.

---

Not wild.

---

Focused.

---

Another Spirit Beast.

---

"…not alone," Nara muttered.

---

As if answering her—

---

Movement echoed above again.

---

Aren's head snapped up.

---

Two more shapes clung to the rocks.

---

Watching.

---

Waiting.

---

His chest tightened.

---

"…you said minor ones weren't dangerous."

---

"They're not," Nara said.

---

A beat.

---

"Until there are more than one."

---

Great.

---

The first creature moved again.

---

This time—

It circled.

---

Slow.

Careful.

---

Not attacking blindly.

---

Aren felt it.

---

They were testing them.

---

The system flickered—

---

— Status —

Name: Aren

Level: 1

State: Strained

Essence: 3

---

[Threat Assessment: Multiple Targets]

[Recommendation: Defensive Positioning]

---

Aren swallowed.

---

Defensive…

---

That meant—

---

Don't rush.

---

Don't panic.

---

Harder than it sounded.

---

"Nara…" he said quietly.

---

"Yeah."

---

"…what do I do?"

---

A brief pause.

---

Then—

---

"Watch."

---

That was it.

---

Aren blinked.

---

"…watch?"

---

But Nara had already moved.

---

She stepped forward—just one step—

---

And that was enough.

---

The nearest creature lunged.

---

Fast.

Low.

---

Her spear came down diagonally—

---

THUD.

---

The creature hit the ground hard, its movement cut short.

---

But not dead.

---

It twisted.

Too quickly.

---

Aren flinched—

---

"Nara—!"

---

She adjusted instantly, driving the butt of her spear into its side and forcing it away.

---

"Stay focused!" she snapped.

---

Aren clenched his fists.

---

Right.

---

Focus.

---

Not fear.

---

Not yet.

---

Above—

The second creature dropped.

---

This one aimed straight for Aren.

---

His body locked.

---

Too slow.

---

Too late—

---

The system surged—

---

[Reaction Stimulus Triggered]

---

Something in him moved.

---

Not thought.

---

Instinct.

---

Aren stepped back—just barely—

---

The creature's claws scraped past his chest instead of through it.

---

He stumbled.

Nearly fell.

---

But stayed up.

---

"…I moved," he whispered.

---

Nara glanced at him briefly.

---

"…good. Now don't stop."

---

Easier said than done.

---

The creature turned again.

---

Faster this time.

---

No hesitation.

---

Aren felt it—

---

The pressure building in his chest again.

---

That heat.

---

That dangerous, tempting heat.

---

The system flickered—

---

[Essence Available: 3]

[Reinforcement Possible]

---

Aren hesitated.

---

Last time—

It hurt.

---

Badly.

---

But this time—

He didn't have a choice.

---

The creature lunged again.

---

Closer.

Faster.

---

Aren inhaled sharply.

---

"…just a little."

---

The system responded.

---

[Essence Consumed: 1]

[Applying: Minor Reinforcement]

---

The change was immediate.

---

Not stronger.

---

Sharper.

---

Clearer.

---

The world slowed—just enough.

---

Aren moved.

---

This time—

He didn't stumble.

---

He shifted to the side—

---

Barely avoiding the strike.

---

The creature overextended.

---

And for a split second—

---

It was open.

---

Aren reacted without thinking.

---

His hand shot forward—

---

And pushed.

---

Nothing flashy.

Nothing powerful.

---

But enough.

---

The creature lost balance.

---

Just enough.

---

"Nara—!"

---

She didn't hesitate.

---

Her spear cut through the air—

---

THUD.

---

This time—

The creature didn't get back up.

---

Silence.

---

Short.

---

Because the third one was already moving.

---

But something had changed.

---

Aren could feel it.

---

Not confidence.

---

Not yet.

---

But understanding.

---

This wasn't about power.

---

It was about timing.

---

Position.

---

Survival.

---

The last creature hesitated.

---

Just for a second.

---

Its eyes flicked between them.

---

Calculating.

---

Then—

---

It turned—

---

And fled.

---

Gone as quickly as it came.

---

Silence returned.

---

Real silence this time.

---

Aren's breathing was uneven.

---

His chest tightened again—

---

Worse than before.

---

The system flickered violently—

---

[Warning: Strain Increasing]

[State: Unstable]

---

Aren staggered.

---

Nara caught him before he fell.

---

"…I told you," she muttered. "Don't overdo it."

---

Aren let out a weak breath.

---

"…didn't feel like overdoing it."

---

"…that's how it starts."

---

He gave a faint, tired laugh.

---

"…good to know."

---

For a moment—

They just stood there.

---

Recovering.

---

Breathing.

---

Then Nara stepped back, studying him again.

---

More carefully this time.

---

"…you're adapting faster than you should."

---

Aren frowned slightly.

---

"…that bad?"

---

"…that dangerous."

---

That word again.

---

Danger.

---

Aren exhaled slowly.

---

"…guess that's my thing now."

---

Nara didn't smile.

---

"…yeah."

---

A pause.

---

Then she turned slightly, looking ahead.

---

"…we keep moving."

---

Aren nodded.

---

No argument this time.

---

But as they walked—

---

The system pulsed faintly one more time.

---

[Combat Experience Recorded]

[Synchronization Increased: +1%]

---

Aren's steps slowed slightly.

---

Synchronization…?

---

He didn't ask.

---

Not yet.

---

Because something told him—

---

He wasn't ready for that answer.
