Chapter 6 - The Road That Doesn't Wait

Chapter 6: The Road That Doesn't Wait

---

They didn't speak for a while.

---

The village disappeared behind them faster than Aren expected.

Or maybe—

He just didn't want to look back long enough to notice.

---

The path ahead was barely a path at all.

Just a narrow stretch of flattened earth winding through dry grass and scattered trees. The kind of road that didn't lead anywhere important—

Unless you already knew where you were going.

---

Aren followed a few steps behind Nara.

Not too close.

Not too far.

---

She moved like she belonged out here.

Every step deliberate.

Every glance purposeful.

---

Aren noticed things now.

Small things.

---

The way she avoided certain patches of ground.

How her eyes lingered on the tree line longer than necessary.

How her hand never strayed far from her spear.

---

She wasn't relaxed.

---

Not even a little.

---

"…you think they'll follow?" Aren asked finally.

---

Nara didn't turn.

---

"They will."

---

Simple.

Certain.

---

Aren swallowed.

---

"…great."

---

Silence returned.

---

But this time, it felt different.

---

Less heavy.

More… waiting.

---

The wind shifted slightly, brushing against Aren's skin.

For a moment—

It almost felt normal.

---

Then—

---

The system flickered.

---

— Status —

Name: Aren

Level: 1

Title: Ashborn (Locked)

State: Strained

Essence: 3

---

[Passive Function Stabilizing…]

---

Aren blinked.

---

"…passive?"

---

"What?" Nara asked.

---

He hesitated.

---

"…nothing."

---

He wasn't ready to explain something he didn't understand himself.

---

Still—

That word stayed in his mind.

---

Passive.

---

Meaning it was working… even when he wasn't using it?

---

Aren frowned slightly.

---

That didn't feel comforting.

---

Ahead, Nara suddenly slowed.

---

Then stopped.

---

Aren almost walked into her.

---

"What—?"

---

She raised a hand.

---

Silence.

---

Aren froze instantly.

---

The air felt… different.

---

Not heavy like before.

---

But wrong.

---

A faint sound drifted through the trees.

---

Rustling.

---

Soft.

---

Too controlled to be wind.

---

Nara crouched slightly, eyes scanning the area.

---

"…we're not alone," she said quietly.

---

Aren's chest tightened.

---

"Hunters?"

---

She shook her head once.

---

"…no."

---

That somehow felt worse.

---

Another rustle.

Closer this time.

---

Aren's fingers curled slightly.

---

He could feel it again.

---

That faint warmth in his chest.

---

Not rising.

---

Just… there.

---

Watching.

Waiting.

---

From the bushes ahead—

Something moved.

---

Aren tensed.

---

Then—

---

A small figure stepped out.

---

Not large.

Not threatening.

---

A creature about the size of a dog, with thin limbs and pale, bark-like skin stretched across its body. Small leaves sprouted along its back, trembling slightly as it moved.

---

Its eyes were wide.

---

Bright.

---

And fixed on them.

---

Aren blinked.

---

"…that's a Spirit Beast?"

---

Nara didn't lower her guard.

---

"…a minor one."

---

The creature tilted its head slightly.

---

Then took a cautious step forward.

---

It didn't growl.

Didn't lunge.

---

It just watched.

---

Aren felt his shoulders relax slightly.

---

"…it doesn't look dangerous."

---

Nara didn't respond immediately.

---

Instead—

She picked up a small stone.

---

And tossed it.

---

Not at the creature—

But to the side.

---

The reaction was instant.

---

The small beast snapped toward the sound—

Then bolted.

---

Fast.

---

Gone in seconds.

---

Aren blinked.

---

"…okay."

---

Nara stood upright again.

---

"They're harmless alone," she said. "But they don't stay alone."

---

Aren's chest tightened.

---

"…meaning?"

---

She started walking again.

---

"Meaning if you see one—others are nearby."

---

Aren glanced back at where the creature had vanished.

---

"…how many is 'others'?"

---

Nara didn't answer.

---

That was enough of an answer.

---

They moved faster after that.

---

Not running.

---

But no longer slow.

---

Aren's breathing stayed steady, but his mind wasn't.

---

Everything felt different now.

---

The road.

The air.

Even his own body.

---

That small beast—

---

It hadn't attacked.

---

Just like the bigger one.

---

Aren frowned.

---

"…why didn't it come at us?"

---

Nara glanced back briefly.

---

"…it sensed something."

---

Aren's stomach dropped slightly.

---

"…me?"

---

"…maybe."

---

That word again.

---

Maybe.

---

Nothing was certain.

---

And somehow—

That was worse.

---

The system flickered again.

---

[Environmental Scan: Active]

[Essence Density: Low]

---

Aren exhaled quietly.

---

At least something was calm.

---

For now.

---

The sun had begun to lower slightly by the time they reached a narrow stretch between two rocky outcrops.

---

The path tightened.

---

Less room to move.

---

Less room to escape.

---

Nara slowed again.

---

Aren noticed immediately.

---

"…what is it this time?"

---

She didn't answer.

---

But her grip on the spear tightened.

---

That was enough.

---

Aren's chest tensed again.

---

The system flickered—

---

[Warning: Movement Detected]

---

Not ahead.

---

Not behind.

---

Above.

---

Aren's eyes widened.

---

"…Nara—"

---

Too late.

---

Something dropped from the rocks above.

---

Fast.

---

Silent.

---

And heading straight for them.

---
