Chapter 5 - Episode 5: THE PRICE OF POWER

The silence after the encounter did not feel like peace. It felt like preparation. The hospital room remained unchanged—white walls, steady light, distant footsteps—but something beneath reality had already shifted. The system had responded. And more importantly, Akira had responded to it. That alone meant the balance was no longer stable.

Tick… tick… tick…

The sound had changed again. It was no longer just a presence—it felt synchronized with something deeper, as if it measured not only time but consequence. Each pulse carried weight, subtle but undeniable, like a reminder that every action now had a cost. Akira stood motionless in the center of the room, his gaze lowered slightly, his breathing controlled. The memory of the encounter replayed in his mind—not as fear, but as analysis.

"…It wasn't random."

His voice was quiet.

"It followed a pattern."

"Confirmed."

The response came instantly.

Akira's thoughts aligned. "…Delay before movement. Adaptation after failure. Increased speed with each attempt."

"Confirmed."

"…So it learns."

"Confirmed."

That single detail settled everything. The Correction Units were not mindless. They were reactive systems—designed to adjust based on deviation. That meant one thing.

"…The longer I survive…"

"…the harder it becomes."

"Confirmed."

Akira exhaled slowly. That was not a disadvantage. It was a rule. And rules could be understood.

"…Then I can use that."

Silence followed. No denial. No restriction.

Far beyond perception—

NULL observed.

"Subject demonstrates adaptive cognition."

"Threat evaluation… increasing."

Back in the room, Akira raised his hand slowly, studying it. Nothing had visibly changed. No marks, no energy, no external sign of difference. And yet—something was there. He had felt it during the encounter. That moment where everything slowed. That moment where perception shifted beyond normal limits.

"…What was that?"

"System response."

"…Be specific."

A brief pause.

"Designation: Temporal Perception Adjustment."

Akira's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…So I didn't become faster."

"Correct."

"…I became aware faster."

"Confirmed."

That distinction mattered. It wasn't physical strength. It wasn't speed. It was perception—his ability to process reality beyond normal human limits. That was why he had been able to avoid the attacks.

"…And I can trigger it again?"

"Condition: Unknown."

"…So it's not controlled yet."

"Confirmed."

Akira lowered his hand slowly. That meant his current state was unstable. Unpredictable. But not useless.

"…Then I need to understand it."

Tick… tick… tick…

The sound pulsed again.

This time—

Sharper.

Akira's gaze lifted instantly.

"…Another one."

"Correction event probability: Increasing."

"…So they don't come alone."

"Confirmed."

The implication was clear. The system was escalating.

"…Then I don't have time."

He stepped forward.

Not away.

Toward the center of the room.

His breathing steadied.

His thoughts aligned.

"…If they adapt…"

"…then I have to adapt faster."

Tick… tick… tick…

The air shifted.

This time—

More violently.

The world flickered again, but not briefly. The darkness bled into reality, spreading like cracks through the space itself. The hospital room distorted, its structure overlapping with that same endless void.

Akira didn't hesitate.

"…I see it."

"Layer overlap increasing."

"…So this is the entry point."

The darkness twisted.

Two figures formed.

Not one.

Two.

Both unstable.

Both incomplete.

But clearly—

More dangerous.

"Correction Units: Multiple deployment confirmed."

Akira's body tensed slightly.

"…So this is escalation."

"Confirmed."

The units moved simultaneously.

Faster than before.

No delay.

No hesitation.

Akira stepped back—

Barely avoiding the first strike.

The second followed instantly.

No gap.

No pattern.

"…They removed the delay."

"Confirmed."

His breathing tightened.

"…So they're adapting before I can."

The units moved again.

Relentless.

Akira dodged again—

But this time—

Closer.

Too close.

"…If I fail this…"

The thought sharpened.

"…I die."

For the first time—

The weight of it hit fully.

Not emotionally.

Logically.

There was no reset.

No second chance.

The system would not hesitate again.

Tick… tick… tick…

The sound intensified.

Akira's chest tightened.

"…Trigger it…"

His focus sharpened.

"…That state…"

The units attacked again.

Faster.

More precise.

Akira's body reacted—

But not enough.

The edge of one strike grazed him.

Pain shot through his arm.

Real.

Immediate.

"…So they can hit me."

"Confirmed."

His breathing became heavier.

"…Then I can't rely on avoidance."

The next attack came instantly.

No hesitation.

Akira's vision sharpened—

For a fraction of a second—

Everything slowed.

The world stretched.

The movement of the units became visible.

Readable.

"…There."

His body moved.

Perfect timing.

The attack missed.

The second followed—

He adjusted again.

Barely.

But enough.

"…I can see it."

"Temporal perception active."

Akira's thoughts accelerated.

"…But it won't last."

"Confirmed."

That meant he had limited time.

Limited advantage.

"…Then I end it now."

His gaze locked onto one of the units.

"…If they adapt…"

"…then I remove them before they do."

The unit moved—

Akira stepped forward.

Not away.

Forward.

The timing was precise.

Calculated.

He reached out—

And struck.

Contact.

The moment his hand collided with the unit—

The space shattered.

The unit destabilized violently, its form collapsing inward before dissolving completely.

One gone.

The second reacted instantly.

Faster.

More aggressive.

"…It's adapting again."

Akira turned—

The perception began to fade.

"…No…"

The world sped up again.

Too fast.

The unit attacked—

Direct.

Unavoidable.

Akira raised his arm—

Impact.

Pain surged through him as he was thrown backward, his body slamming into the floor.

"…Not enough…"

His breathing became unstable.

The unit approached.

No hesitation.

No delay.

Tick… tick… tick…

The sound pulsed violently.

"…Get up…"

Akira forced himself up.

"…This is not where it ends…"

The unit lunged—

Akira moved—

Not perfectly.

But enough.

He stepped inside its range.

Closer.

Too close.

"…If perception isn't enough…"

His thoughts aligned sharply.

"…then I change the rule."

He grabbed the unit.

Direct contact.

This time—

He didn't hesitate.

The connection surged stronger.

The darkness reacted violently.

The unit distorted—

And shattered completely.

Silence.

The world snapped back.

The hospital room returned.

Both units—

Gone.

Akira stood still.

Breathing heavily.

But alive.

Tick… tick… tick…

The sound stabilized again.

"…So this is the price."

"Confirmed."

Akira's gaze lowered slightly.

"…The more I fight…"

"…the more it escalates."

"Confirmed."

"…And the more I survive…"

"…the stronger I become."

A pause.

Then—

"Confirmed."

That was enough.

Far beyond existence—

NULL observed.

"Subject has exceeded initial expectations."

"Threat classification: Active anomaly."

Back in the room, Akira clenched his fist slowly.

"…Then I keep going."

His voice was steady.

Resolved.

"…No matter how many come…"

"…I'll destroy them."

Tick… tick… tick…

The countdown continued.

But now—

It no longer felt like something chasing him.

It felt like something he was chasing back.
