Chapter 11 - The Man Who Stood Waiting

The clearing remained silent.

Too silent.

Even the wind seemed to hesitate as it passed through the trees.

Leo stood still, his chest rising and falling heavily, his eyes fixed on the man standing ahead.

The one who hadn't moved even after their sudden arrival.

Behind them the pursuers had stopped.

Not because they couldn't continue.

But because they chose not to.

That alone sent a strange feeling through Leo's body.

"…Why did they stop?" Leo whispered.

Aldric didn't answer immediately.

His gaze remained locked on the man.

"…Because they know him," he said quietly.

Leo's eyes widened slightly.

Know him?

The man in the clearing finally moved.

Just one step forward.

That was enough.

The air shifted.

Not violently.

Not dramatically.

But noticeably.

As if something invisible had tightened around the space.

The men behind them exchanged glances.

Their confidence from before gone.

"…So it's true," one of them muttered."…You were heading here."

Aldric let out a small breath.

"…You took your time," he said.

The man's lips curved into the faintest smile.

"…And you look worse than I expected."

Leo blinked.

The casual tone between them felt… strange.

As if this situation wasn't dangerous at all.

"…Who is he?" Leo asked under his breath.

Aldric didn't take his eyes off the man.

"…Someone we needed."

That answer didn't explain anything.

The pursuers seemed to lose their patience.

"…Enough," one of them said, stepping forward."We take him now."

The moment he moved

the man in the clearing raised his hand slightly.

That was all.

No sudden burst.

No loud impact.

Yet the man who stepped forward stopped.

Mid-step.

His body froze.

Leo's eyes widened.

"…What"

The others noticed it too.

"…Move!" another one shouted.

But he didn't.

He couldn't.

A quiet pressure filled the air.

Not crushing.

Not violent.

But absolute.

The man in the clearing tilted his head slightly, as if observing something insignificant.

"…You've been quite persistent," he said calmly.

The men hesitated.

For the first time fear began to show.

"…Do you even know who we serve?" one of them asked, his voice less steady than before.

The man didn't answer.

Instead he took a step forward.

And just like that the distance between them felt meaningless.

Leo couldn't explain it.

It wasn't speed.

It was something else.

Something that made movement itself feel irrelevant.

The man appeared in front of them.

The frozen one dropped to his knees.

Not from force.

But as if his body had simply given up.

The others stepped back instinctively.

"…That's enough," the man said.

His voice wasn't loud.

But it carried weight.

The kind that didn't need volume.

Aldric finally relaxed slightly.

Leo noticed it.

That small change meant everything.

"…We should leave," Aldric said quietly.

The man in the clearing didn't object.

"…You're in no condition to stay," he replied.

Leo blinked again.

They were just… leaving?

Just like that?

He glanced back once.

The men who had been chasing them stood still.

Not attacking.

Not following.

Just watching.

As if crossing that invisible line meant something they couldn't afford.

Leo turned forward again.

They began walking.

This time no one followed.

After a short distance Leo finally spoke.

"…Who are you?" he asked.

The man didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he glanced at Aldric.

"…You didn't tell him?" he asked.

Aldric gave a faint smile.

"…Didn't get the chance."

The man let out a small breath.

Then his eyes shifted to Leo.

Calm.

Sharp.

"…You can call me Kael."

Leo frowned slightly.

"…Just Kael?"

A faint smile appeared.

"…For now."

That answer didn't help.

But Leo didn't push further.

Not yet.

Because something else was bothering him.

He looked back once more.

The forest behind them was quiet again.

Too quiet.

"…They won't come after us?" Leo asked.

Kael's expression didn't change.

"…They will."

Leo's chest tightened slightly.

"…Then why"

"…Because next time," Kael said,"…they won't come like this."

A silence followed.

A heavier one than before.

Leo felt it.

The situation wasn't over.

It had just begun.

Aldric glanced at Kael briefly.

"…We should move," he said.

Kael nodded once.

"…Yes."

Leo looked between them.

Then sighed softly.

"…Guess I don't have a choice anymore."

Neither of them denied it.

The three of them began walking

leaving the clearing behind.

Unaware that far beyond the forest…

someone had already received news of what had just happened.

And this time

they wouldn't send just a few men.

---------

The clearing remained still

but the stillness did not last.

A sharp sound cut through the silence.

"Move!"

The hesitation that had held the pursuers back shattered in an instant.

One of them stepped forward, then another.

Whatever fear had gripped them before

it was overridden by something stronger.

Orders.

"Take him!" one of them barked, his voice carrying a forced steadiness.

They moved together this time.

Not reckless.

Not scattered.

Coordinated.

Leo felt it immediately.

The difference.

These weren't the same men who chased them before.

These men were ready to risk everything.

Aldric's expression hardened slightly.

"…They've made their decision," he said quietly.

Kael didn't respond.

He simply stood there.

Unmoving.

As if the approaching danger meant nothing.

Leo's eyes flickered between the incoming men and Kael.

"…They're coming," he said, unable to hide the tension in his voice.

Still

no reaction.

Kael only took a slow step forward.

The ground beneath his feet barely made a sound.

Yet that single step felt heavier than the charge of all the men rushing toward him.

The first attacker reached him.

Fast.

His blade cut through the air with precision, aimed directly at Kael's shoulder.

Leo's heart skipped.

But Kael didn't move away.

He raised his hand.

And caught it.

Barehanded.

The blade stopped.

Not slowed.

Not deflected.

Stopped.

The attacker's eyes widened in disbelief.

Before he could react

Kael twisted his wrist slightly.

A sharp crack echoed.

The man's weapon fell from his hand as his body collapsed to the ground, his breath knocked out of him completely.

Leo froze.

"…What…?"

The second man was already there.

He aimed low, striking toward Kael's side.

Kael shifted just enough.

The attack missed by a fraction.

And in the same motion

Kael stepped in.

Not fast.

But inevitable.

His strike landed cleanly against the man's chest.

A dull sound echoed

And the man was sent flying backward, his body crashing against the ground several feet away.

Everything happened in seconds.

Too fast to fully process.

Too precise to be accidental.

The remaining two hesitated.

Just for a moment.

But that moment was enough.

Kael moved.

This time there was no restraint.

He closed the distance in an instant.

One of them tried to react

raising his weapon

But Kael's hand reached him first.

Gripping his collar

lifting him slightly off the ground

And then slamming him down.

The impact sent dust rising into the air.

The man didn't get back up.

The last one stepped back instinctively.

Fear was no longer hidden now.

It was clear.

"…Monster…" he whispered.

Kael didn't respond.

He simply walked toward him.

Step by step.

No rush.

No hesitation.

The man turned trying to escape

But he didn't get far.

Kael reached him in two steps.

A single strike

precise

controlled

And the man collapsed.

Silence returned.

But this time it was different.

Heavier.

Leo stood there, completely still.

His mind struggled to catch up with what he had just witnessed.

The fight

if it could even be called that

had ended before it truly began.

No wasted movement.

No unnecessary effort.

Just complete dominance.

Aldric exhaled slowly.

"…You haven't changed," he said.

Kael glanced at him briefly.

"…You have," he replied.

Leo finally found his voice.

"…What… was that…?" he asked, his tone unsteady.

Neither of them answered immediately.

Leo took a step forward, his eyes fixed on Kael.

"…Who are you?" he asked again.

This time Kael turned fully toward him.

Their eyes met.

For a moment

Leo felt it again.

That pressure.

Not forced.

But undeniable.

Kael studied him briefly.

Then he spoke.

"Kael Ardent Valerius."

The name settled into the air with weight.

Leo's brows furrowed slightly.

But before he could react

Kael continued.

"Captain of the Lion Cavalry…"

A brief pause.

"…of House Valencrest."

Leo's eyes widened.

The words hit harder than anything before.

Not because of how they were said

But because of what they meant.

This man

who had just crushed trained fighters as if they were nothing

Was not just someone strong.

He belonged to something far greater.

Leo looked at Aldric instinctively.

But Aldric only gave a faint, knowing smile.

As if this was exactly what he had expected.

Leo slowly turned back toward Kael.

His expression still filled with disbelief.

"…Just who… are you people…?" he muttered.

Kael didn't answer.

Instead, he turned away slightly, his gaze shifting toward the distant horizon.

"…We should move," he said calmly."This place won't stay quiet for long."

Aldric nodded.

Leo remained still for a moment longer.

Then

he exhaled deeply.

And followed.

Because one thing was now clear

The path he had stepped onto…

was far beyond anything he had ever imagined.
