Chapter 12 - A Path With No Return

The forest had grown quieter.

Not the tense silence from before

but something heavier.

As if even the trees were watching.

Leo walked behind the two men, his steps slower now.

Not because he couldn't keep up.

But because his mind refused to settle.

Everything that had just happened replayed over and over.

The chase.

The fight.

The way those men

who had been hunting them without hesitation

had been crushed so easily.

Leo's fingers curled slightly.

"…Captain of the Lion Cavalry…" he muttered under his breath.

The words didn't feel real.

He looked ahead.

Kael walked calmly, his posture straight, his pace steady.

As if nothing had happened.

As if he hadn't just defeated trained fighters like they were nothing.

Aldric walked beside him, his breathing more stable now.

But even then

Leo could see it.

The exhaustion.

"…How far is this place?" Leo asked.

Kael answered this time.

"…By nightfall, we should reach the outskirts."

Leo nodded faintly.

Nightfall.

That felt far.

Too far.

A silence settled again.

But this time

Leo couldn't ignore it.

"…Why me?"

The words came out suddenly.

Both Kael and Aldric slowed slightly.

Leo didn't stop.

"…Out of all people… why did this happen to me?" he asked.

His voice wasn't loud.

But there was something inside it now.

Something heavier than before.

Aldric glanced at him.

"…It wasn't meant to involve you," he said.

Leo let out a small, dry laugh.

"…But it did."

No one denied it.

Leo's gaze dropped to the ground.

"…Yesterday… I was just trying to get through the day," he said quietly."…Now people are trying to kill me."

His steps slowed further.

"…I don't even know what I got dragged into."

The words lingered.

Aldric's expression shifted slightly.

For once

he didn't have an answer ready.

Kael, however, spoke.

"…Then leave."

Leo froze.

"…What?"

Kael stopped walking and turned slightly toward him.

"…If you think this is too much… you can still leave," he said calmly."…Turn back. Walk away. Forget all of this."

The words were simple.

Too simple.

Leo stared at him.

"…And go where?" he asked.

No answer came.

Because there wasn't one.

Leo let out a slow breath.

"…Even if I go back…" he said,"…do you think they'll just leave me alone?"

Silence.

That was answer enough.

Leo shook his head slightly.

"…I thought so."

He looked up again.

This time

his eyes were different.

Not confused.

Not hesitant.

But clearer.

"…Then I'll go with you," he said.

Aldric watched him carefully.

"…You don't have to"

"I know," Leo cut in.

His voice was firm.

"…But I want to."

That simple line carried more weight than anything before.

Kael observed him for a moment.

"…Then understand this," he said.

Leo met his gaze.

"…Once you step forward… there's no turning back."

Leo didn't hesitate.

"…I already stepped forward the moment I helped him," he replied.

A brief silence followed.

Then

Kael nodded once.

"…Good."

They resumed walking.

But something had changed.

Not the situation.

Not the danger.

Leo.

For the first time

he wasn't just running.

He was choosing.

The sun slowly began to descend.

The light softened.

Shadows stretched longer across the ground.

In the distance

faint outlines of structures began to appear.

A town.

Small.

But alive.

Leo exhaled softly.

"…We made it."

Aldric didn't respond.

Kael's gaze narrowed slightly.

"…Not yet," he said.

Leo frowned.

"…What do you mean?"

Kael didn't answer immediately.

Instead

his eyes shifted toward the entrance of the town.

People moved normally.

Merchants.

Travelers.

Villagers.

Everything looked… ordinary.

Too ordinary.

"…Something's wrong," Aldric said quietly.

Leo's chest tightened again.

"…Don't tell me"

"…We're being watched," Kael said.

The words fell like a stone.

Leo instinctively looked around.

Nothing.

No obvious threat.

But that feeling

It was back.

"…Inside the town?" Leo asked.

Kael nodded slightly.

"…They're already ahead of us."

Aldric's expression darkened.

"…So it begins," he muttered.

Leo swallowed slowly.

Just when he thought they had escaped

it started again.

Kael took a step forward.

"…Stay close," he said.

Leo nodded.

They began walking toward the town.

Each step felt heavier than the last.

Because this time

they weren't walking into safety.

They were walking into something waiting for them.

And this time

it wouldn't be as simple as running.

---------

The forest did not feel the same anymore.

The sounds of pursuit had faded.

No footsteps.

No distant shouts.

No presence breathing down their necks.

And yet

Leo couldn't relax.

His body still moved as if danger was just a step behind him.

Each breath came slower now, but the tension remained.

He walked behind Aldric and Kael, his eyes constantly shifting, scanning the surroundings as if expecting someone to emerge from the shadows at any moment.

"…They're gone… right?" Leo asked, his voice quieter than usual.

Aldric didn't answer.

It was Kael who spoke.

"…For now."

Leo frowned slightly.

"…You both say that a lot."

Kael didn't look back.

"…Because you're still alive."

Leo fell silent.

That answer

wasn't reassuring.

The path they followed had changed.

The dense forest slowly gave way to a more defined trail.

The ground became firmer.

The trees, less crowded.

Signs of human presence began to appear.

Wagon tracks.

Broken branches.

Footprints.

They weren't alone in this area.

Leo noticed it.

"…People pass through here," he said.

Aldric nodded faintly.

"…We're close."

That single line made Leo's chest tighten.

Close.

After everything that had happened

that word felt unreal.

They continued walking.

Minutes passed.

Then more.

The sunlight began to shift, turning warmer as the day slowly leaned toward evening.

And then

Kael stopped.

Not abruptly.

But deliberately.

Leo nearly walked into Aldric before stopping himself.

"…What is it?" he asked.

Kael didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked ahead.

Leo followed his gaze.

At first

he saw nothing unusual.

Just a long stretch of road.

Then

something massive appeared at the end of it.

Leo's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…What is that…?" he murmured.

As they walked closer

the shape became clearer.

Walls.

Not ordinary ones.

Massive stone walls that rose high into the sky, stretching endlessly to both sides.

Leo slowed down.

"…That's… a town?" he asked.

Aldric let out a faint breath.

"…No."

They kept walking.

With each step

the scale of it grew.

The walls weren't just tall they were overwhelming.

Built from solid stone, layered and reinforced, their surface marked with faint engravings that seemed to shimmer slightly under the sunlight.

Guards stood at intervals along the top.

Still.

Watchful.

The main gate stood at the center.

Huge.

Far larger than anything Leo had ever seen.

Carved with intricate designs that told stories he couldn't understand.

His steps slowed to a stop.

"…This… isn't just a house…" he said softly.

Aldric glanced at him.

"…No," he replied.

"…This is Valencrest."

Leo's eyes widened.

House Valencrest.

This…

This was it?

It didn't look like a noble's residence.

It looked like a fortress.

No

something even greater.

"…People live here?" Leo asked.

Kael answered this time.

"…Thousands."

Leo's breath caught slightly.

Thousands.

His village

didn't even have a fraction of that.

The gates began to open as they approached.

Slowly.

Heavily.

The sound echoed across the area, deep and commanding.

Leo instinctively stiffened.

Guards stepped forward.

Not aggressively

but with presence.

Their armor gleamed under the fading light.

Their posture straight.

Their eyes sharp.

One of them looked directly at Kael.

And immediately

he bowed his head.

"…Captain."

Leo noticed it.

Not just him

all of them.

Respect.

No

recognition.

Kael didn't stop.

"…Open the path," he said calmly.

No hesitation.

The guards moved aside instantly.

Leo stood there for a moment, frozen.

"…They just… let us in…" he muttered.

Aldric walked past him.

"…You'll get used to it."

Leo quickly followed.

As they stepped through the gates

Leo felt it.

The difference.

The air itself felt… heavier.

Not suffocating.

But filled with something unfamiliar.

Power.

The space inside opened up into a vast expanse.

Buildings stretched in every direction.

Stone pathways.

Training grounds.

Barracks.

Markets.

People moved everywhere.

Not chaotic

but organized.

Purposeful.

Everywhere Leo looked

there was something new.

Something overwhelming.

Warriors training with precision.

Servants moving efficiently.

Messengers rushing through pathways.

This wasn't just a residence.

This was a world.

"…This is…" Leo whispered.

His voice trailed off.

Because he didn't have the words.

Aldric glanced at him briefly.

"…Overwhelming?" he asked.

Leo didn't respond.

Because that word

wasn't enough.

Kael continued walking forward.

People stepped aside as he passed.

Not out of fear

but out of respect.

Leo followed, his gaze constantly shifting, trying to take everything in.

"…You grew up here?" he asked Aldric.

Aldric hesitated for a moment.

"…Yes."

Leo looked at him again.

Then back at everything around him.

"…And you ran from this?" he asked.

Aldric didn't answer.

But that silence

said enough.

They continued deeper inside.

The structures grew more refined.

More detailed.

At the center

stood something even greater.

A massive structure that rose above everything else.

The main estate.

Its design was beyond anything Leo had ever seen.

Elegant.

Commanding.

Unreachable.

Leo stopped walking.

Completely.

His eyes fixed on it.

"…This…" he whispered.

His voice barely came out.

The journey.

The chase.

The fear.

Everything

led here.

To this place.

To something far beyond his world.

His fingers tightened slightly.

"…What kind of place did I just walk into…?" he muttered.

Neither Kael nor Aldric answered.

Because the answer

was something he would have to understand himself.

Leo stood there

his expression filled with disbelief.

With awe.

With something deeper.

Something that had just begun to take shape.

A world he never knew existed

now stood right in front of him.
