Chapter 14 - The Anchor

The days of distance caused by Inoichi's training finally gave way to the routine of the Academy. For Ino, it was a world of discovery; for Shin, it was a psychological battlefield.

Every time they crossed paths in the clan's corridors or during dinner, the subject was always the same.

— You won't believe it, Shin! Sasuke-kun hit every target without even looking! — she would say, tossing her hair back and glancing sideways to catch his reaction. — The Uchiha have this way of throwing that feels like magic. And their fire jutsu? It's on a completely different level…

Shin remained silent, cleaning his kunai with an irritating calm, but inside, the "Void" he cultivated in ANBU wavered. He knew what she was doing. He saw the micro-expression of satisfaction on her face every time his grip on the weapon tightened just a little. Ino was testing him, poking at the monster in the shadows to see if the boy inside still felt anything.

And he did.

He admitted it to himself: jealousy wasn't a technical flaw—it was the fuel of his obsession. He wanted to be the only sun on her horizon, the standard by which she would measure everything else in the world.

One afternoon, Shin returned from an exhausting group tactics session with Nara and Eagle. His body ached, and his mind was heavy with the new frequencies he had learned to manipulate. As he crossed the courtyard of the Yamanaka compound, he saw her.

Ino was waiting near the entrance, hiding something behind her back. Her face was redder than usual, and she avoided direct eye contact.

— You're late — she muttered, though there was no real anger in her voice.

— The mission required more time — Shin replied, stopping in front of her.

Ino extended a small package wrapped in simple tissue paper.

— Here. It's for you.

Shin hesitated for a second before taking it.

— What is this?

— It's your birthday, idiot — she said, looking away toward a nearby tree. — I… I started getting an allowance from my dad now that I'm in the Academy. So I bought this. Don't ask questions, just open it.

With the same hands that had taken lives without hesitation that very week, Shin opened the package with almost reverent care. Inside lay a necklace made of two metal pieces that fit perfectly together. It was simple, but elegant.

When he looked up, he realized: Ino was already wearing the other half around her neck, resting against the collar of her training clothes.

For the first time in years, the constant cold in Shin's chest was replaced by a wave of genuine warmth. The "broken monster" that Nara and Eagle saw at headquarters was silenced by the gesture of a six-year-old girl. The necklace wasn't just an accessory—it was a mark of belonging. A bond no Sharingan could read and no mental technique could break.

Ino noticed his expression and the slight relaxation of his shoulders. The blush on her face deepened.

— Don't get the wrong idea! It's just so you don't forget you're a Yamanaka, no matter how much you run around with those masked guys!

Before Shin could say a single word—or thank her in the way his analytical mind was trying to construct—Ino turned and ran toward the main house, the matching half of the necklace bouncing against her chest.

Shin stood in the courtyard for a long time, holding the metal piece. He placed it around his neck, feeling the cold weight against his skin, but the warmth in his chest remained. That night, Sasuke Uchiha and his perfect throws meant absolutely nothing.

He touched the necklace and looked up at the moon. Ino had given him more than a gift; she had given him a reason to return from every abyss ANBU would force him to descend into.
