Chapter 9 - Chapter 7: The Mirage of the Master

The Return to the Lens

A week had passed since the explosion in the garden, and today, Nandini was finally returning to work. The doctors had cleared her, but her mind remained a chaotic archive of that afternoon. As she dressed for the day, she couldn't stop the thoughts from swirling. Was it a shock-induced hallucination? Or had the world truly paused?

Aditya had provided her with a private apartment for the duration of the campaign, and today she was heading back to the studio for a series of shots inspired by ancient, timeless fashion. The high-fashion campaign was gaining momentum, and despite the trauma, the industry was already buzzing about the "Color of Blood" teaser.

The Shadow in the Glass

Nandini arrived at the studio, greeting the crew with a quiet smile. She thanked everyone for their support during her recovery and apologized for the delay in the schedule. Arka, who had visited her several times in the hospital, was already setting up.

"Ready to create some magic, Nandini?" Arka asked, his camera ready.

The studio had been fully repaired after the surge. As the shoot began, Nandini tried to focus on her poses, but her attention kept drifting to the large glass wall of the studio. In the reflection, she thought she saw a flicker of movement—a dark, indistinct shadow that seemed to be watching her from a distance.

It looked like a silhouette with deep, angry red eyes, staring at her with a heavy, pregnant rage. She blinked, and it was gone. Then it was back, closer this time. She gasped, her breath catching in her throat, and let out a soft scream.

"Nandini? What is it?" Arka stepped forward, his face etched with concern. "Are you okay?"

"I... I thought I saw something," she whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs.

Arka called for a ten-minute break, sensing her distress. He offered her some coffee, trying to comfort her. "It's just the after-effects of the shock, Nandini. You've been through a lot. Take a moment."

The Confrontation in the Office

But Nandini knew she couldn't just sit there. She needed answers. She marched toward Aditya's private office. His assistant tried to block her path, but Samuel, who was standing nearby, gave a subtle nod. Samuel remained outside as Nandini stepped into the room.

Aditya was behind his desk, looking as composed and untouchable as ever. The ten-year age gap between them felt like a canyon, but she didn't care.

"I'm not a child, Aditya," she began, her voice tight. "I saw what I saw. The world stopped. You moved through the air. And you were hurt saving me."

Aditya didn't look up immediately. He slowly closed his laptop and leaned back. "Adrenaline is a powerful drug, Nandini. It can make a second feel like a lifetime. You were in shock."

"Then explain the blood on my saree! Explain how you got from the third floor to the ground in a blink!" She stepped closer, her hands trembling. "You're lying to me. You're trying to make me feel like I'm losing my mind."

Aditya stood up, his presence suddenly overwhelming. He walked around the desk, stopping just inches from her. The air grew cold, and she felt a faint, buzzing vibration—the pulse she now recognized. He leaned in, his voice dropping to a low, intimate whisper near her ear.

"If I had the power you describe, do you think I would use it to play hero in a garden? Focus on your work, Nandini. You are the face of this brand. Don't let these 'miracles' distract you from your potential."

He patted her shoulder with a patronizing, yet strangely lingering touch. "Go back to the shoot. You need rest, not ghost stories."

The Doubt and the Departure

Nandini left the office, her mind in a state of shattered logic. Had she really imagined it all? She found Arka near the refreshment table, and they shared a quiet coffee.

"Arka," she asked, searching his face. "Is it possible for someone to... I don't know... jump from a third floor and be fine? Or for time to just stop?"

Arka laughed, the sound warm and dismissive. "Time stop? Nandini, this isn't a movie. No human can do that. And anyone jumping from that height would be in a cast for a year. You're just processing the trauma."

He comforted her, telling her he was like a brother to her and that he was sorry for the accident. But as she nodded, her thoughts shifted to Amit.

"Have you heard from Amit?" Arka asked gently.

Nandini looked away. "He changed his number. I've tried calling, emailing... nothing. I think he's misunderstood everything."

"Maybe it's time to move on, Nandini," Arka said. "You deserve so much more. You're in a new life now. If Amit is meant to be in your future, he'll find his way back. But are you sure you still love him the way you did?"

Nandini sat in silence, the question echoing in her mind. Had her friendship with Amit simply been a precursor to something else? Or was she clinging to a past that no longer fit the woman she was becoming?
