Chapter 12 - 12.The Choice She Shouldn’t Have Made

The night felt endless.

Heavy.

Like the air itself refused to move.

Lily stood frozen between them.

On one side—Alex.

His hand wrapped tightly around hers, pulling her toward the gates. Toward freedom. Toward everything she had ever known.

On the other—

Him.

Standing still. Silent. Watching.

Not chasing.

Not forcing.

Just… waiting.

"Lily," Alex said, his voice urgent. "We have to go. Now."

She didn't respond.

Her heart pounded violently in her chest, her thoughts colliding, refusing to settle into anything clear.

This was what she wanted.

Wasn't it?

Freedom.

So why did it feel so hard to take one more step?

"Come back," the man said quietly.

Her breath caught.

"No…" she whispered.

But the word lacked strength.

Alex frowned, tightening his grip.

"Lily, look at me."

She turned to him.

His eyes were filled with worry. With urgency. With something real and grounding.

"I came for you," he said. "Let's go home."

Home.

That word should have made everything simple.

It should have pulled her forward without hesitation.

But it didn't.

Instead—

Her chest tightened painfully.

Her gaze shifted back.

To him.

Still standing there.

Still watching her.

Like he already knew.

"Why aren't you stopping us?" she asked suddenly.

Alex blinked. "What?"

But she wasn't looking at him anymore.

A pause.

Then—

"Because I don't need to," the man replied calmly.

Her heart skipped.

"That doesn't make any sense," Alex snapped.

"It will," he said quietly.

Silence stretched again.

"Lily, don't listen to him," Alex said quickly. "He's messing with your head. That's what he does."

Maybe he was right.

Maybe this was all manipulation.

But then—

Why did it feel so real?

"I…"

Her voice trembled.

"I don't understand what's happening to me."

"You don't need to understand," Alex said firmly. "You just need to leave."

Simple.

Direct.

Logical.

Everything she used to believe in.

Then why—

Why did it feel incomplete?

Her fingers loosened slightly in his grip.

He noticed immediately.

"Lily?"

Tears filled her eyes.

"I should go," she whispered.

"Yes," Alex said instantly. "You should."

She nodded.

"Yes…"

Then—

"But…"

That one word shattered everything.

Alex stared at her.

"No," he said quickly. "No 'but.' There's no 'but' here."

But there was.

Because her heart refused to agree with her mind.

"I can't just walk away," she said softly.

His expression changed.

"What are you saying?"

She didn't answer immediately.

Because she was trying to understand it herself.

"It doesn't feel finished," she whispered.

Silence.

Then—

"Of course it isn't," the man said quietly.

Alex turned sharply. "Don't talk to her."

But Lily didn't look away.

"You don't leave something like this behind without looking back," he continued.

Her chest tightened again.

"Stop," Alex said, more desperate now. "Lily, this isn't you. You're scared, confused—that's all. Once we get out of here, everything will go back to normal."

Normal.

The word echoed in her mind.

Her life before.

Her room.

Her books.

Her routine.

Safe.

Simple.

So why—

Why did it suddenly feel so far away?

Her breathing became uneven.

"I don't think it will," she admitted.

Alex froze.

"What?"

"I don't think it'll go back to normal," she said again, her voice shaking.

A pause.

"Because of him?"

She didn't answer.

And that silence—

Said everything.

"No," Alex said, shaking his head. "No, this isn't real. He did something to you. This isn't you talking."

"Then what is it?" she asked, her voice breaking.

He didn't have an answer.

Because she didn't either.

The only thing she knew—

Was that something inside her had changed.

And she couldn't ignore it.

"I hate this," she whispered.

"Then leave it," Alex said immediately.

"Or stay," the man added.

Her chest tightened painfully.

"Stop it," she said, shaking her head.

Neither of them spoke.

Because now—

The choice was hers.

No one forcing her.

No one dragging her.

Just her.

And the decision she had to make.

Her hand slowly slipped from Alex's grip.

His eyes widened instantly.

"Lily—no."

"I'm not staying because I want to," she said quickly.

"Then don't!"

Her voice trembled.

"I'm staying because I can't leave like this."

"That doesn't make any sense!"

"I know!" she cried.

Silence fell again.

Tears streamed down her face.

"I don't understand it either," she whispered. "But if I leave now… it's not over. It won't be over."

Alex stared at her like he didn't recognize her anymore.

"I came here for you," he said quietly.

Her heart broke at the words.

"I know…"

"I risked everything," he continued. "I came into this place knowing what he is… for you."

Each word hit harder than the last.

"And you're choosing to stay?"

The question lingered in the air.

She shook her head weakly.

"I'm not choosing him…"

Her voice broke.

"…I just can't leave."

But to Alex—

That was the same thing.

His grip on her hand loosened completely now.

"Wow…" he whispered.

The word wasn't loud.

But it carried disbelief.

Pain.

"I don't even know what to say," he added.

She looked at him, tears falling faster now.

"I'm sorry…"

He let out a hollow laugh.

"Yeah… me too."

Silence stretched between them.

Then slowly—

He stepped back.

Letting go.

Completely.

"Fine," he said, his voice quieter now.

"Stay."

Her chest tightened painfully.

"But don't expect me to understand this," he added.

She nodded weakly.

Because she didn't understand it either.

He looked at her one last time.

Then turned away.

And walked.

Out of the gates.

Out of the place.

Out of her reach.

This time—

He didn't look back.

Lily stood there, frozen.

Something inside her cracked.

But she didn't move.

Didn't run after him.

Because she had already made her choice.

Even if it didn't make sense.

Slowly—

She turned back.

He was still there.

Watching her.

Not surprised.

Not questioning.

Just… certain.

Her heart pounded again.

"Are you going to stop me now?" she asked quietly.

A pause.

"No," he said.

The answer was simple.

Because he didn't need to anymore.

She had already stayed.

And that was enough.

The gates closed behind Alex in the distance.

The sound echoed faintly.

Final.

Lily felt it.

The shift.

She had crossed something invisible.

Something she couldn't go back from.

"I don't know why I did that," she admitted softly.

"I do," he replied.

Her eyes lifted to his.

"What?"

But he didn't answer.

Instead, he stepped closer.

Not threatening.

Not forceful.

Just… closer.

And somehow—

That felt more dangerous than anything else.

Because this time—

She didn't step back.

And that terrified her more than him ever could.
