Chapter 14 — The Power of Life
That night, everyone on the battleship enjoyed a feast of freshly grilled fish.

The enormous fish Shinji had caught became a reward for the entire crew.
During dinner, Shinji Ikari finally learned the details about his promotion.
Originally, Marine Headquarters had intended to promote him directly to Major because of his achievements—especially infiltrating the pirate base and killing Captain Yan Feng, who frequently attacked merchant ships.
However, Vice Admiral Garp had strongly objected.
In the end, Garp insisted that Shinji still needed more experience, so the promotion was temporarily limited.
Shinji didn't mind.
He knew his abilities were still incomplete.
Right now, he was barely holding everything together through raw effort.
After dinner, Shinji walked quietly beneath the moonlight.
He wasn't admiring the scenery.
Instead, he replayed every moment of the battle in his mind.
"My training method consumes too much food," he muttered.
"In just half a day I emptied half the ship's supplies."
"And that fight exposed all my weaknesses."
He began listing them in his mind.
First—
He had no method to escape danger freely, such as the Six Powers technique Moonwalk, which allowed someone to move through the air.
Second—
He lacked a long-range attack technique using bare hands, like the Six Powers move Finger Pistol.
Third—
His defense relied almost entirely on Iron Body and speed.
He had no flexible evasive technique like Paper Arts, which allowed the body to move like paper and avoid attacks.
Shinji suddenly understood something.
Garp had been right.
If he wanted to grow stronger, he needed to master the Six Powers of the Navy.
Only then could he truly fight freely in any environment.
But there was still one mystery.
Shinji looked at his hand.
"What exactly are the limits of my Devil Fruit?"
So far, the fruit only seemed to grant:
Powerful vitality
Extreme healing
Energy feedback from damage and exhaustion
Compared to Zoan-type Devil Fruits, which enhanced strength, speed, and physical abilities through animal transformations, it seemed almost underwhelming.
But Shinji refused to believe that a Paramecia fruit could be that ordinary.
In the world of pirates, Paramecia abilities were often extremely versatile.
Everything depended on how they were developed.
Is it really just vitality and energy feedback?
Shinji didn't think so.
That night—
He didn't train.
He didn't sleep either.
Instead, he stared at the seawater bathtub inside his small cabin.
The tub occupied nearly half the room.
It was the foundation of his strange training method.
Morning came.
Shinji's eyes were bloodshot from staying awake all night.
As the first rays of sunlight shone through the cabin window—
He finally closed his eyes.
When he opened them again, the redness had already vanished.
The exhaustion was gone.
His Devil Fruit had restored him once more.
His abnormal training methods had slowly strengthened the fruit's healing and energy feedback.
But Shinji wanted something more.
He exhaled deeply.
"The sea represents death for Devil Fruit users."
"And water is the origin of life."
"My fruit is called the Life Fruit… which means it stands above life itself."
Shinji's eyes sharpened.
"If that's true…"
"Then this fruit must be far more powerful than I thought."
He placed his hand gently on the edge of the bathtub.
At first—
Nothing happened.
But gradually, faint ripples spread across the water.
Shinji focused.
He directed the fruit's power into the bathtub.
For a brief moment—
His mind suddenly cleared.
CRACK!
The bathtub shattered instantly.
Fragments of porcelain reassembled themselves in midair.
They reshaped according to Shinji's will.
Some pieces even formed a small cloak identical to a Marine uniform.
Soon—
The fragments became a porcelain figure.
A boy.
And that boy looked exactly like Shinji.
"Success," Shinji whispered.
"Well… partially."
The porcelain figure slowly became more lifelike.
When it finally looked identical to him—
Shinji nodded.
"Now that's success."
This was the second ability of the Life Fruit.
It could give life to objects.
Matter infused with his vitality could move and act under his control.
Shinji even suspected he could one day give vitality to living beings.
The Soul-Soul Fruit controlled souls.
The Revive-Revive Fruit dealt with the afterlife.
His fruit—
Controlled life itself.
Which was greater?
Soul or life?
Shinji couldn't answer yet.
But he was determined to find out.
After resting briefly, Shinji continued experimenting.
He infused vitality into:
A rope
The wooden bed
A blanket
All of them began moving according to his will.
They could change shape, stretch, twist, or rebuild themselves.
But there was an important difference.
Unlike the Soul-Soul Fruit—
These objects had no independent consciousness.
They simply followed Shinji's commands.
For example:
The blanket could reshape itself like clay.
The rope could move like a living creature.
But none of them could think or act independently.
They were living tools.
"So the life I give them is still my own vitality," Shinji realized.
"I'm lending them life."
"And I can take it back whenever I want."
He wondered about something else.
Could this ability also heal other people?
Previously, the fruit only healed Shinji himself.
But if he could inject vitality into others—
It might restore their injuries as well.
Shinji's mind raced with possibilities.
His current development level was still shallow.
There was much more to discover.
He tried one more experiment.
This time he poured vitality directly into the cabin door.
The wood seemed to melt and shift under his touch.
It was completely under his control.
"Interesting…"
Shinji smiled.
"If I can control objects like this…"
"Then trees, rocks, and even the environment itself could become my weapons."
It resembled Devil Fruit awakening, though he knew the difference was still enormous.
Finally, Shinji withdrew his vitality.
Small green lights appeared on the bathtub fragments, rope, bed, and door.
They drifted back into his body.
"So that's what life energy looks like…"
He stretched lazily.
Then he walked onto the deck.
In the distance—
A new island appeared on the horizon.
Dark clouds covered the sky above it.
Violent winds howled across the sea.
At the center of the island—
A massive tornado rose straight into the sky.
Shinji narrowed his eyes.
Their next destination had arrived.
Storm Island.
