Chapter 6 - Body that rejects limit

Nyx did not remember when he lost consciousness.

One moment, he had been standing, forcing his body to endure the crushing weight of the Aether Realm as something inside him began to change.

The next…

Nothing.

When he opened his eyes again, the world hadn't changed.

The sky still shimmered in unnatural colors, flowing endlessly like liquid light. The ground beneath him still pulsed faintly, as if something alive existed just beneath its surface.

Everything was the same.

Except him.

Nyx lay still for a moment, staring upward, his breathing slow and steady. There was no panic in his eyes, no confusion. Just quiet awareness.

Then, slowly, he moved.

He pushed himself up into a sitting position.

His body responded immediately.

Too easily.

Nyx frowned.

That was the first thing he noticed.

The second came a moment later.

His arm.

The one that had been broken.

He lifted it slowly, turning it from side to side, expecting pain… expecting resistance.

There was none.

Not even a trace.

Nyx flexed his fingers.

Once.

Twice.

Perfect.

His eyes narrowed slightly as he studied it.

He remembered the sound clearly. The crack. The sharp, unbearable pain that had followed. That wasn't something his mind could fabricate.

It had been real.

So why was it gone?

He looked closer.

At first, nothing seemed different.

But when he focused…

He saw it.

Faint, dark lines beneath his skin.

Thin, almost invisible, like cracks that had been sealed but not erased. They spread lightly across his arm, barely noticeable unless you were looking for them.

Nyx traced them with his fingers.

He felt nothing.

But something told him they mattered.

"…So it wasn't just pain," he muttered under his breath.

"Correct."

Nyx froze.

The voice came without warning, calm and emotionless as always.

He turned his head.

The Aetherborn stood not far from him, watching in silence.

Nyx held their gaze for a moment before looking away.

"…You could've said something earlier."

No response.

He exhaled quietly.

"…Right. Of course."

There was no point expecting answers from them.

Nyx planted his hand against the ground and pushed himself up to his feet.

Again, his body responded instantly.

That same strange ease.

Not normal.

He stood still for a moment, testing his balance.

His body still felt heavy, but it was different now. More stable. More responsive. Like it had adapted to the pressure instead of just enduring it.

Then the pressure returned.

It fell on him without warning.

Nyx's muscles tensed immediately as the weight pressed down on him from all directions.

But this time…

He didn't fall.

His legs bent slightly, absorbing the force. His breathing tightened, but he remained standing.

His eyes sharpened.

"…It changed."

Or maybe…

He had.

Nyx adjusted his stance, lowering his center of gravity just slightly.

The pressure reacted, increasing again, but he remained steady.

Before, even this would have crushed him instantly.

Now…

He endured.

He took a step forward.

The pressure surged.

His body trembled.

But he didn't fall.

He held it.

For longer than before.

Then he took another step.

The ground cracked faintly beneath him, a low vibration spreading outward as if something deep below had responded.

Nyx paused.

He could feel it now.

Not just the pressure.

Something else.

A connection.

"…This place reacts to everything," he murmured.

"Correct."

Nyx glanced toward the Aetherborn again.

"…And you still won't explain anything properly."

Silence.

He almost smiled.

Almost.

Nyx looked forward again and exhaled slowly.

"Fine."

If they wouldn't explain it…

He would learn it himself.

He took another step.

The pressure surged again, heavier this time, pushing against him harder than before.

Nyx's legs shook violently.

But he didn't fall.

Instead, he adjusted.

He shifted his weight slightly, bending his knees just enough to distribute the force.

It worked.

Not perfectly.

But enough.

Nyx's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…So it's not just brute force."

It was adaptation.

Control.

Understanding.

He took another step.

And another.

Each one was harder than the last.

Each one pushed him closer to his limit.

But that limit…

Was changing.

Then—

It happened again.

The pulse.

Nyx froze.

It came from deep within his chest.

Slow.

Heavy.

Not his heartbeat.

Something else.

"…There it is…"

He placed his hand against his chest.

The pulse came again.

Stronger this time.

The air around him shifted slightly.

The pressure reacted.

It increased suddenly.

But Nyx didn't fall.

His body trembled violently, but he stayed upright.

The cracks appeared.

This time, they didn't flicker.

They spread.

From his chest…

Across his shoulders…

Down his arms.

Dark lines glowing faintly beneath his skin.

Nyx's breath caught.

"…So this is what's been happening…"

The pain followed.

But it wasn't the same as before.

It didn't feel like something was breaking.

It felt like something was being rebuilt.

His muscles tightened, then loosened.

His bones felt heavier, stronger.

His body shifted, adjusting in ways he didn't fully understand.

Nyx clenched his teeth.

"…Then don't stop."

The words came out low.

"If this is what makes me stronger… then keep going."

The pressure responded instantly.

It slammed down harder than ever before.

Nyx's legs buckled.

But he didn't fall.

Not immediately.

He held it.

Even as his body screamed.

Even as the cracks spread further.

Even as the pulse in his chest grew louder.

His vision blurred.

But he didn't look away.

"I won't… fall…"

The ground beneath him trembled.

The air distorted.

For a brief moment…

The pressure hesitated.

Then—

It returned.

Stronger.

More violent.

Nyx's body finally gave out.

He collapsed.

This time, he didn't try to stop it.

He hit the ground hard.

But something was different.

The impact didn't feel the same.

It still hurt.

But less.

His body absorbed it better.

Adapted.

Nyx lay there for a moment, breathing heavily.

Then slowly…

He pushed himself up again.

Faster than before.

Stronger than before.

He stood.

And this time…

He knew.

"…I'm changing."

Not just surviving.

Not just enduring.

Evolving.

Nyx looked down at his hands again.

The cracks had faded.

But the feeling remained.

Power.

Not something given.

Something built.

He lifted his head.

"…Again."

He stepped forward.

The pressure surged.

But he endured it longer.

Another step.

Then another.

Each time, he fell.

But each time…

He rose faster.

And the Aetherborn watched in silence.

"…His body rejects limitation."

"…As expected."

Nyx didn't hear them.

But deep inside him…

Something agreed.
