Chapter 12 - The whisper of Raizen's clan

The tension Nyx left behind in the royal courtyard did not fade with his disappearance. It lingered like a shadow that refused to disperse, creeping into the minds of every guard who had witnessed him. Even as the morning sun climbed higher into the sky, casting warmth across the palace grounds, an unnatural chill seemed to cling to the air.

Nyx moved swiftly through the forest, his steps silent against the soft earth. The trees seemed to part for him, their leaves whispering as if acknowledging his presence. He did not look back. There was no need. He could already imagine the chaos beginning to unfold behind him.

"They've seen me now," he murmured quietly, his voice barely louder than the wind brushing past him. "Good… let the fear spread."

He slowed his pace as he approached a ridge overlooking a vast expanse of land beyond the Hoshin territory. In the distance, a different aura pulsed—sharp, aggressive, and far more volatile than the structured energy of the royal clan.

The Raizen Clan.

Nyx's eyes narrowed slightly as he took in the sight. Unlike the disciplined order of Hoshin, Raizen territory was alive with raw, untamed energy. Their warriors trained openly, their clashes echoing across the land like distant thunder. Sparks of power erupted here and there, bursts of spirit energy colliding in violent displays.

A faint smirk touched Nyx's lips.

"So this is where strength is… forged through chaos," he said under his breath.

He crouched low, observing carefully. Warriors sparred relentlessly, their movements aggressive and unforgiving. There was no hesitation here, no restraint. Every strike was meant to overwhelm, to dominate. It was a stark contrast to the calculated discipline of the royal clan.

"Interesting," Nyx muttered. "They rely on power… not control."

As he continued watching, a loud voice cut through the chaos.

"Again!" a man roared.

Nyx shifted his gaze toward the source. A tall warrior stood in the center of a training ground, his presence overwhelming even from a distance. His body was scarred, his aura blazing like a raging storm. Around him, several fighters struggled to stand, their bodies trembling from exhaustion.

"You call that strength?" the man barked. "If that's all you have, you'll be crushed the moment real war begins!"

One of the younger fighters clenched his fists. "We're trying, Captain!"

"Trying?" the captain scoffed. "Trying gets you killed!"

Nyx watched silently, his expression unreadable. Raw power… but lacking refinement. They burn too quickly.

He tilted his head slightly, analyzing their movements, their breathing patterns, the flow of their spirit energy. Every detail mattered. Every weakness could be exploited.

Suddenly, his senses sharpened.

A presence.

Close.

Nyx didn't move immediately. Instead, he allowed his awareness to expand, pinpointing the exact location. Someone was watching him.

"…You're not very good at hiding," Nyx said calmly, his voice carrying just enough to reach the unseen observer.

A moment of silence followed.

Then—

A figure stepped out from behind a cluster of trees.

A young man, no older than Nyx himself, with sharp eyes and an aura that flickered like lightning. His stance was relaxed, but there was tension beneath it, like a coiled spring ready to snap.

"You noticed," the stranger said, his tone carrying a mix of surprise and curiosity.

Nyx turned slowly to face him, his expression calm. "Of course I did."

The young man studied him carefully. "You're not from around here."

"No," Nyx replied simply.

"Then you're either very brave… or very stupid," the stranger continued, a faint grin forming on his lips. "This is Raizen territory."

Nyx's gaze didn't waver. "I know."

The grin widened slightly. "Then why are you here?"

Nyx paused for a moment, as if considering his answer. Then he said, "Observation."

The young man raised an eyebrow. "Observation?"

"I'm studying the clans," Nyx continued. "Their strengths. Their weaknesses."

A brief silence followed.

Then the stranger laughed softly. "You're either confident… or insane."

"Maybe both," Nyx replied.

The young man took a step closer, his aura flaring slightly. "You talk like you're above all this. Like you're not afraid."

Nyx met his gaze. "Should I be?"

The air between them grew tense.

For a moment, neither moved.

Then—

The stranger's grin faded slightly. "You're strange," he admitted. "Most people would be trembling right now."

Nyx tilted his head. "And you're not attacking me."

"…Not yet," the young man said.

Nyx's lips curved faintly. "Good. That means you're thinking."

The stranger's eyes narrowed. "Don't mistake curiosity for weakness."

"I wouldn't," Nyx replied calmly.

Another silence.

Then the young man exhaled slowly. "Name."

Nyx didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he studied the stranger more closely. The way his energy flickered, unstable but powerful. The way his stance shifted slightly, always ready to react. This was someone worth remembering.

"…Nyx," he said finally.

The stranger's expression didn't change, but something flickered in his eyes.

"…Nyx," he repeated. "I'm Kael."

Nyx nodded slightly. "Kael."

Kael crossed his arms. "So, Nyx… what exactly are you planning?"

Nyx looked past him, toward the Raizen training grounds. "That depends."

"On what?"

Nyx's eyes sharpened slightly.

"On how useful your clan proves to be."

Kael's expression hardened. "Careful. You're standing in enemy territory."

Nyx didn't react. "Am I?"

The words hung in the air.

Kael stared at him for a moment, then let out a short laugh. "You've got guts, I'll give you that."

Nyx remained silent.

Kael stepped closer, lowering his voice slightly. "If you're really here to observe… then you picked the right place. Raizen doesn't hide its strength."

"I can see that," Nyx replied.

"But strength isn't everything," Kael added. "Not when it comes to war."

Nyx's gaze flickered back to him. "You understand that?"

Kael smirked. "More than most."

Another pause.

Then Nyx said, "Good."

Kael raised an eyebrow. "Good?"

Nyx turned slightly, his attention returning to the training grounds. "That means you're not useless."

Kael blinked.

Then frowned. "You've got a sharp tongue."

"And you're still here," Nyx replied.

Kael let out a small laugh. "You're interesting, Nyx. I'll give you that."

Nyx didn't respond.

Instead, he took a step forward, moving past Kael as if the conversation had already ended.

"Hey," Kael called out. "You're just going to walk in?"

Nyx stopped briefly.

"…Yes."

Kael stared at him. "You're insane."

"Probably," Nyx said.

Then he continued walking.

Kael hesitated for a moment… then followed.

"…This should be interesting," he muttered under his breath.

Ahead, the Raizen warriors continued their brutal training, unaware of the storm that was quietly approaching.

And for the first time since his return…

Nyx wasn't alone.
