Chapter 16 - Secrets of the patrol

Night fell slowly over Raizen territory, swallowing the last traces of sunlight and replacing them with a cold, watchful darkness. The training grounds that once roared with energy were now quieter, though not entirely still. Fires burned in scattered corners, their flickering light casting long shadows that danced across the cracked earth.

Nyx stood at the edge of a ridge overlooking the outer perimeter of the Raizen domain.

Silent.

Still.

Watching.

Below, patrol units moved in steady formations, their movements far more disciplined than the chaos displayed during training. Unlike the open aggression of the warriors in the arena, these men carried a different kind of energy—focused, alert, and sharpened by responsibility.

Nyx's eyes narrowed slightly.

"So this is where the real structure lies…" he murmured.

Behind him, footsteps approached.

"You don't sleep, do you?" Kael's voice came, slightly amused but edged with curiosity.

Nyx didn't turn. "Sleep is a habit. Not a necessity."

Kael stopped beside him, following his gaze down toward the patrol routes. "You've been watching them for a while now."

"Yes."

"And?" Kael asked. "What do you see?"

Nyx's voice remained calm. "Order hidden beneath chaos. Strength disguised as recklessness. Raizen is not as simple as it appears."

Kael smirked faintly. "Of course it's not. You think we survive this long just by punching everything in sight?"

Nyx didn't respond immediately.

Instead, he focused on a group of patrol guards moving along the outer wall. Their spacing was precise. Their communication was subtle. Every few seconds, one would glance in a different direction, covering blind spots without speaking.

Efficient.

Calculated.

"Your patrol units are better trained than your frontline fighters," Nyx said.

Kael raised an eyebrow. "That's a strange observation."

"It's a true one," Nyx replied.

Kael crossed his arms. "Explain."

Nyx pointed slightly downward. "Look at their spacing. Their timing. The way they anticipate movement instead of reacting to it."

Kael watched for a moment, then nodded slowly. "…Yeah. That's deliberate."

Nyx's gaze sharpened. "Which means someone here understands strategy."

Kael let out a quiet breath. "You're starting to see the bigger picture."

Nyx finally turned slightly. "There's always a bigger picture."

Before Kael could respond—

A sudden shift in the air caught Nyx's attention.

His eyes flickered.

"…Something's wrong."

Kael frowned. "What?"

Nyx didn't answer immediately. Instead, he focused, his senses expanding outward like an invisible net. The night carried subtle vibrations, faint disturbances in the flow of energy that most would never notice.

But Nyx did.

"There," he said quietly.

Kael followed his gaze toward the far edge of the patrol route. At first, everything seemed normal. Guards moved as expected. The formation remained intact.

Then—

One of them hesitated.

Just for a moment.

But it was enough.

Nyx's eyes narrowed. "Did you see that?"

Kael's expression hardened. "…Yeah."

The guard who hesitated quickly resumed his position, but the rhythm had already been broken.

And Nyx noticed everything.

"He's out of sync," Nyx said.

Kael uncrossed his arms. "Could be nothing."

Nyx shook his head. "No. It's something."

Kael looked at him. "You're sure?"

Nyx's voice dropped slightly. "I don't deal in uncertainty."

Without another word, he stepped forward.

Kael blinked. "Wait—where are you going?"

"To confirm."

Nyx moved down the ridge with fluid precision, his body blending into the darkness as if he were part of it. Kael hesitated for only a second before following.

"…You're going to get us into trouble," he muttered.

Nyx didn't respond.

They moved quickly, silently, closing the distance between themselves and the patrol unit. The closer they got, the clearer the disturbance became.

The guard.

His movements were slightly off.

His breathing uneven.

His aura…

Unstable.

Nyx stopped just outside their line of sight, crouching behind a low structure. Kael moved beside him, his expression serious now.

"…I see it," Kael admitted. "That's not normal."

Nyx's eyes remained fixed on the guard. "No. It isn't."

The patrol leader approached the man. "You're lagging," he said sharply. "Stay in formation."

"Yes, sir," the guard replied quickly.

But his voice—

It trembled.

Nyx's gaze hardened.

"That's not fear," he whispered.

Kael frowned. "Then what is it?"

Nyx didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he focused deeper, pushing his senses further.

And then—

He felt it.

A foreign presence.

Faint.

Hidden.

But there.

"…He's not alone," Nyx said quietly.

Kael's eyes widened slightly. "What do you mean?"

Nyx's voice was low, precise. "There's something attached to him."

Kael stared at the guard again, his expression shifting. "…You're saying—"

"Yes," Nyx interrupted. "Something is controlling him."

The realization hit instantly.

"…That's not possible," Kael said, though his tone lacked conviction.

Nyx's eyes didn't move. "It is now."

Before Kael could say anything else—

The guard stopped moving.

Completely.

The entire patrol froze.

"What's wrong?" the leader demanded.

No response.

The guard slowly lifted his head.

And then—

He smiled.

But it wasn't his smile.

It was wrong.

Twisted.

Unnatural.

Nyx's expression darkened.

"…There it is."

Kael took a step back instinctively. "What the hell…"

The guard's body began to tremble slightly, his aura flickering violently as something beneath the surface began to push outward.

The other patrol members stepped back.

"What's happening to him?!"

"Stay back!" the leader shouted.

But it was too late.

The guard's body jerked—

And then he spoke.

"Found… you…"

The voice wasn't his.

It was deeper.

Distorted.

And it sent a chill through the air.

Nyx stood up slowly.

Kael grabbed his arm. "Don't. This isn't normal."

Nyx pulled free effortlessly. "Exactly."

The guard's head snapped toward Nyx's direction.

Even though he was hidden.

Even though he hadn't revealed himself.

"…There you are…" the voice whispered.

Kael's eyes widened. "It can sense you?!"

Nyx didn't respond.

Because now—

This wasn't observation anymore.

This was something else.

The guard's body twisted unnaturally, his aura exploding outward in chaotic bursts. The other patrol members scattered, unable to approach.

"What is that thing?!"

"Kill it!"

"No—wait!"

Confusion.

Fear.

Chaos.

Nyx stepped forward into the open.

Immediately, all eyes turned to him.

"You again?!" the patrol leader shouted.

But Nyx ignored him.

His focus was entirely on the possessed guard.

"…Interesting," Nyx said quietly.

The creature inside the guard laughed.

A low, distorted sound.

"You… are not like the others…"

Nyx's eyes sharpened. "And you don't belong here."

The thing smiled wider. "Neither do you…"

Kael moved up beside Nyx, his voice tense. "What is that?"

Nyx answered calmly.

"A problem."

The creature's body shifted again, its energy becoming more unstable by the second.

"Come closer…" it whispered.

Nyx didn't hesitate.

He stepped forward.

Kael grabbed him again. "Are you crazy?!"

Nyx glanced at him briefly. "Stay back."

Kael frowned. "You don't even know what that is!"

Nyx's gaze returned to the creature.

"I don't need to."

And then—

He moved.

Fast.

Faster than anyone could react.

In a single motion, Nyx appeared in front of the possessed guard, his hand already raised.

The creature reacted instantly, lashing out with unnatural speed—

But Nyx was faster.

His hand pressed against the guard's chest.

And for the first time—

A different kind of energy surged.

Not violent.

Not chaotic.

But overwhelming.

The creature froze.

"…What… is this…" it whispered.

Nyx's voice was calm.

"Something you shouldn't have encountered."

The energy intensified.

The guard screamed—

But the sound changed midway.

From human…

To something else entirely.

Dark energy burst outward, twisting and writhing as it was forced out of the body. The creature shrieked, its form breaking apart under the pressure.

"No… this power…"

Nyx didn't move.

Didn't hesitate.

Didn't show mercy.

"Leave," he said.

And just like that—

The energy shattered.

Dispersing into nothing.

Silence fell.

The guard collapsed to the ground, unconscious but alive.

The patrol stood frozen.

Kael stared at Nyx, his expression completely changed now.

"…What… are you?" he asked quietly.

Nyx lowered his hand.

"…Someone who just found a bigger problem than all of you."

And for the first time—

The night felt heavier than before.

Because whatever that thing was—

It wasn't the last.
