The interior of the cruise ship felt like a gilded cage. Evelyn Meyers put down her glass, the noise of the elite crowd grating on her nerves, and slipped out onto the deck to breathe.
The ship swayed rhythmically against the black waves. Staring into the dark expanse, she couldn't help but remember the night she jumped into the sea. Behind her, the man who once promised to protect her was parading another woman.
"Still thinking about jumping?"
The voice was like poison. Evelyn didn't turn around, gripping the railing tighter. Erica Jones stood behind her, swirling a glass of red wine with a triumphant smirk.
"Get lost, Erica," Evelyn whispered.
"Oh? Is the 'Little Spirit Pearl' losing her sparkle?" Erica laughed, stepping closer.
Evelyn turned to leave, but Erica grabbed her wrist. The touch sent a surge of nausea through Evelyn, she remembered those same hands pushing her down the stairs, ending the life of her unborn child. She violently wrenched her arm away.
