Evelyn shook her head gently. What did it matter anymore? The man who claimed to love her didn't truly believe her, so who else could she possibly expect to stand by her?
"You should get back to your work," she said softly to Alexander. "I can make the trip back by myself. It's too much trouble for you to keep accompanying me in person every time."
Hearing her words, Alexander thought she was offended by his earlier momentary hesitation.
"Evelyn, I do believe you," he emphasized earnestly, stepping closer. "I really do."
Evelyn realized he had misconstrued her intentions. "I'm not angry, Alexander. I just know how busy you are with your official duties. Escorting me back and forth constantly isn't proper."
He shook his head firmly. "There's nothing improper about it. You are the woman I love. Taking care of you is my responsibility." Sending her home was a simple gesture; if he couldn't even manage that, what right did he have to talk about protecting her?
