Chapter 61 - Chapter 61: The War Outside the Walls.

The gates of Aerindor opened fully, allowing a surge of refugees to enter, bringing chaos with them. Families staggered through the entrance, exhausted and distressed. Guards endeavoured to organise the crowds while healers attended to the injured and guided them to safety. Beyond the gates, an even greater threat was approaching. Shadow creatures moved across the dark plains outside the city, resembling a turbulent storm, with hundreds of glowing eyes flickering through the black mist.

Rylan observed the wall above.

"The situation is considerably worse than thirty anomalies," he remarked.

Kael slowly drew his blade.

"They are targeting the city," he stated.

Selene shook her head.

"No," she countered, narrowing her silver eyes toward the creatures. "They are targeting fear."

This realisation prompted immediate understanding in Lyra. The creatures were not mere random monsters; they drew strength from panic, indicating that the rogue anomaly previously encountered was not only causing destruction but also actively feeding on and manipulating the city's emotional state.

The hunter captain swiftly issued orders: "Archers to the walls! Defensive units forward!" Unlike the royal officials, he adapted quickly under pressure, preventing the city's collapse.

However, Lyra could already perceive the spreading fear, with civilians, displaced families, and panicked guards all contributing to the city's unstable energy, which the creatures sought.

The rogue anomaly stood on a distant wrecked wagon outside the gates, observing calmly, almost with pride. He then spread his arms and proclaimed loudly: "Look at them! Humanity fears us!"

Several awakened anomalies among the refugees appeared shaken and conflicted, partly influenced by his words. The rogue laughed maniacally: "They will always fear what we become!"

Behind him, a massive, semi-evolved creature emerged, twice the size of the others, its body in a perpetual state of transformation between human and monster forms. The stranger's expression hardened immediately.

"That creature has evolved," Selene whispered.

"Impossible," Lyra responded.

The creature let out a scream, shattering windows across the outer district and causing civilians to collapse and cover their ears. The smaller shadow creatures surged forward, engaging in combat with arrows, magic, and desperate fighting near the entrance. Still, they advanced, fed by the fear within the city.

Lyra understood the truth: this was an emotional rather than simply physical battle. If panic overwhelmed the city entirely, defeat would be inevitable.

Kael was the first to leap from the wall, unleashing a wave of fire that destroyed several creatures. Rylan followed with a burst of lightning, joking amidst chaos: "Try not to die before I look impressive!" His humour persisted even amid warfare.

The stranger vanished into the shadows, reappearing beside the evolving creature as their collision violently shook the battlefield.

Selene stood beside Lyra, observing intently.

"You already know what must be done," she said.

Lyra clenched her fists.

"I cannot stabilise an entire city," she replied.

"No," Selene agreed, "but you can restore hope."

Lyra noticed Elias aiding injured civilians despite their fear of him. Her understanding deepened, fear spreads rapidly, but so does courage.

She stepped to the wall's edge and released her balance energy, not as a force or an attack, but as a connection. The silver light spread gently, like moonlight, calming the chaos.

The fearful hesitated, their panic slowing. The shadow creatures retreated slightly, weakening. The rogue anomaly's smile faded.

"What are you doing?" Lyra demanded.

"You said fear makes us monsters," she declared. "But fear also grants us a choice."

Some retreating guards stopped; civilians began helping each other again. Even the awakened anomalies advanced to defend the walls. The creatures further weakened.

Selene smiled faintly.

"There it is," she said.

The rogue anomaly twisted in anger: "You think kindness can change reality?" he roared, launching a violent energy blast at the gates.

The hunter captain intercepted with his rune spear, shattering the attack. Everyone paused.

He looked directly at the rogue. "Fear does not justify becoming a monster," he stated.

This declaration struck harder than any attack, as it came from a human, an act of defiance against fear.

The rogue's control slipped. The evolving creature behind him destabilised, became violent and hungry, and then turned on him.

His eyes widened.

"Wait !" he cried.

But it was too late. The creature violently seized the rogue anomaly, shadow energy consuming his body before he vanished into darkness."

A silence fell. The creature roared louder than before, now uncontrolled.

Selene's expression darkened.

"This is dangerous," she commented.

Rylan landed nearby, breathless.

"Can this night become any worse?" he asked.

The creature grew rapidly, larger and more distorted, reality cracking. The stranger appeared beside Lyra.

"If that thing fully evolves," he warned, "the city will not survive."

Lyra saw the terrified people behind the gates, then the monstrous form beyond, and finally understood: this was not the beginning of conflict but the continuation. The war had already commenced.

The monster then turned to Lyra, speaking in the fading voice of the rogue anomaly: "The system seeks balance through destruction."
