The battlefield entered a state of immobilisation, not due to cessation of combat, but because the creature suddenly articulated a command. It's enormous form, contorted unnaturally beyond the city walls, with dark shadow energy oozing from its limbs like liquid smoke. Fragments of the rogue anomaly's face briefly appeared across its shifting surface before dissolving again.
Subsequently, it spoke once more: "The system… seeks balance… through destruction…." Silence pervaded the battlefield, causing even the soldiers to hesitate. Lyra gazed at the creature, her heart pounding increasingly forcefully, as these words seemed inherently wrong, not evil, but fundamentally incorrect, indicating that something had corrupted the system's original intent.
Selene reacted immediately, advising, "Do not listen to it." However, the stranger's expression darkened as he stated, "It is not lying." All attention turned toward him. Kael's brow furrowed sharply. "What do you mean?" The stranger kept his gaze fixed on the creature.
"The system was never designed for humanity." This statement struck like a thunderclap. Rylan blinked and remarked,
"That is both crucial and terrifying."
An aggressive roar erupted as the creature slammed into the outer wall, fracturing the stone defences instantly. Guards screamed; archers lost their formations, and panic rapidly spread. Consequently, the creature grew larger. Selene cursed softly, noting, "It is feeding again."
Lyra recognised that fear fortifies these beings because they originate from imbalance, despair, hatred, and chaos. As humanity's emotional state deteriorates, the monsters gain strength.
Kael looked at Lyra. "We must eliminate it immediately." However, Lyra hesitated, sensing that something was amiss. Inside the creature, she sensed traces of the rogue anomaly still alive, still trapped.
The stranger observed her expression and said, "You are contemplating saving him." "Someone has manipulated him," she replied. "He attempted to harm civilians. He was afraid." Kael moved closer and said softly, "Lyra." Her eyes remained fixed on the creature. "If any part of him remains…" she thought, unable to ignore the possibility.
Rylan exhaled sharply, commenting, "You certainly have a dangerous hero complex." Lyra offered him a faint smile. "Perhaps." She then advanced toward the creature alone, holding her breath while the battlefield seemed to pause.
The creature trembled violently as she approached, with chaotic black energy erupting around it and fracturing the ground. Nevertheless, she continued steadily, carefully. The little girl near the refugees looked up at Lyra, tears in her eyes, and pleaded, "Please save him."
That nearly broke Lyra's heart. She halted directly before the creature, whose glowing eyes fixed upon her, revealing pain, fear, rage, and, beneath all, a desperate desire not to become this entity.
Lyra extended her hand slowly. "You do not have to fight alone any longer." The creature screamed violently, releasing a burst of shadow energy that exploded outward. Kael moved to intervene, but Selene stopped him.
The black energy enveloped Lyra entirely, causing the crowd to gasp in horror. Rylan cursed loudly, yet Lyra did not resist; instead, she activated her balance link. Silver light gently permeated the darkness surrounding the creature, not as an attack, but as a connection.
The creature convulsed violently as memories flooded Lyra's mind: the rogue anomaly awakening alone, people screaming, hunters chasing him, cities rejecting him, transforming fear into hatred. Finally, a whisper from the darkness: "They will never accept you."
Lyra's eyes widened at the realisation that she recognised that voice; someone else was manipulating these unstable anomalies, not the system itself.
The shadow corruption then began to fissure, and silver light spread through its body, gradually restoring the rogue anomaly's human form.
The entire battlefield watched in
astonishment, including Selene, who whispered, "You have purified the corruption." The stranger muttered in disbelief, "That is impossible." The rogue anomaly knelt, breathing heavily, trembling.
He looked up at Lyra with broken eyes and uttered a single, frightening sentence: "Someone is controlling the failed awakenings…."
Before Lyra could respond, a massive explosion erupted within Aerindor City.
