Chapter 66 - Chapter 66: The Purge Order

Rain commenced before dawn. Cold droplets struck the damaged streets of Aerindor, washing blood into the gutters while smoke still emanated from burned structures. The city appeared fatigued. Citizens moved cautiously, whispering behind closed doors. Guards monitored every awakened individual with suspicion. Families concealed their unusual abilities rather than report them. Fear had transformed societal dynamics overnight.

Now, the kingdoms were preparing for conflict. Within the council chamber of Aerindor, a tension hung like a toxic gas. Nobles argued vociferously across the expansive circular hall, while soldiers nervously lined the perimeter.

"The Northern Alliance has already mobilised troops," one official stated. "We must surrender all anomalies immediately," another suggested. "Are we to initiate civil war within our own walls?" a third retorted.

"They are dangerous," was the prevailing opinion. Lyra stood near the rear of the chamber, listening silently alongside Kael, Rylan, Selene, and an unidentified stranger. There was a prevalent distrust among all present, which frightened her more than the monsters outside the city.

The hunter captain was positioned near the central table, his expression unreadable. "The Purge Order is not requesting cooperation," he stated, placing several sealed documents on the table. "It is demanding obedience." A period of silence ensued. One noblewoman appeared slightly pale.

"They would attack Aerindor?" she asked. "If necessary," the captain replied with terrifying certainty.

Rylan folded his arms and commented, "It appears humanity is rapidly accelerating its own destruction."There was no disagreement. The hunter captain observed Lyra intently. "The alliance believes anomalies are the source of systemic instability," he explained. Kael's jaw tightened immediately. "So they blame her," he said.

"They blame all of you," the captain confirmed. This truth cast a heavy shadow over the room. Selene stepped forward calmly. "And Caelum is aware of this." The captain looked sharply at her. "You know this individual." Selene hesitated for a moment longer than expected before answering, "Yes." The nobles reacted abruptly.

"You are connected to him?" one exclaimed.

"Why should we trust any of them?" another questioned. "Perhaps they planned this together," a third added. Fear once again surged through the chamber, always swiftly. Some guards subtly moved their hands toward their weapons, not openly threatening, but prepared. The guards' cautious movements hurt more than outright hostility because they reflected a belief that anyone could become a monster at any moment."Suddenly, a loud crash echoed outside the chamber. All present immediately froze. A guard burst through the doors moments later, breathing heavily.

"Captain!" he called out, terrified. "There is fighting in the lower district." The hunter captain cursed quietly. "Who initiated this?" he demanded. The guard swallowed hard. "Humans attacked an awakened family." Silence fell before he added, "The anomalies fought back." The chamber erupted into shouting.

"This is precisely why they are dangerous!" one shouted. "They were defending themselves!" another countered. "This will escalate!" a third warned. Lyra closed her eyes briefly. The conflict had already begun, not between armies, but between neighbours. That was always more tragic. Kael looked toward her quietly. "What are you contemplating?" he asked.

Lyra slowly opened her eyes. "That fear is prevailing." Selene watched her closely. "And what will you do in response?" she inquired.

Before Lyra could answer, a sudden pulse reverberated through the city. Everyone faltered as the chamber's lights flickered violently. The stranger's expression shifted instantly.

"The Core," she said.

Selene became pale. "No…"

Deep beneath the earth, an ancient force had shifted. Lyra felt it too, a profound vibration beneath reality, like the world itself was taking a breath.

Then all awakened individuals in the chamber experienced a unified reaction: pain. Rylan grasped the table sharply; Kael clenched his chest; even Selene staggered. Their marks glowed violently. Lyra's balance mark burned across her wrist, with new words appearing beneath it: "CORE SYNCHRONIZATION INITIATED."

The stranger looked horrified. "He has reached it already," she said.

The room shook once more. Outside, screams echoed through the cityscape, as civilians collapsed in the streets, clutching their heads. Some lost control instantly; windows shattered; energy storms erupted randomly across rooftops. The system was responding globally.

The hunter captain drew his weapon. "What is happening?" he demanded. Selene steadied herself. "Caelum activated the Core," she explained. Rylan grimaced in pain. "And what does that entail?" Selene turned to Lyra. "It means every anomaly is evolving once again." Silence descended sharply. Then, with the worst implications yet to come, an aide burst into the chamber, visibly terrified.

"The Northern Alliance has issued a declaration," he announced. The captain's brow furrowed. "What declaration?" he asked. "They are marching on Aerindor," the messenger replied, voice trembling. Complete silence ensued before he added, "They believe this city has become the epicentre of the anomaly outbreak."

Kael immediately moved beside Lyra. "When do they arrive?" he asked. "In three days," the messenger answered faintly. Thus, in three days, an entire alliance army would reach the city amid uncontrolled global anomaly evolution, while fear consumed humanity. And beneath the earth, Caelum waited.

Lyra gazed slowly out the chamber window toward the storm-shrouded horizon. For the first time since this crisis began, she truly felt the weight of the world. Deep underground, Caelum stood before the glowing Core with closed eyes. Suddenly, a second voice spoke behind him. Cold, ancient, and inhuman, it said, "You awakened it too early."
