Chapter 65 - Chapter 65: The Core.

The city of Aerindor remained restless throughout the night. Smoke billowed through the fractured streets as exhausted guards conducted patrols alongside frightened civilians. The deceased were accounted for in silence, while the injured filled every temple and healing facility available. Over all these scenes of turmoil, one unsettling truth loomed consistently.

Caelum had not arrived to conquer the city; rather, his purpose was to induce doubt and challenge fundamental beliefs. Lyra stood alone on a balcony overlooking the damaged capital, the cold night wind brushing against her face. For the first time in several days, the city was silent. However, her thoughts were tumultuous.

"If he reaches the Core first, the world will end," she thought, haunted by Selene's words. Behind her, footsteps approached quietly. "You should rest," Kael advised.

Lyra responded with a tired smile without turning around. "You say that every night." "And each night, you ignore me," he replied, nearly eliciting a smile from her.

Kael leaned against the stone railing, his eyes reflecting the faint firelight below. Silence persisted for a moment before Lyra finally inquired, "What is the Core?"

Kael's expression tightened slightly. "Has Selene not told you?" She mentioned we should wait, Lyra responded. Kael looked towards the distant city lights. "That usually indicates troubling news." Before she could respond, Selene emerged quietly from the shadows. "You are both awake," she noted.

"Correction," Rylan added immediately behind her, "none of us has slept because our lives have become a nightmare." The stranger also appeared moments later, silently observing. The entire group had inadvertently gathered, instinctively sensing that an important revelation was imminent.

Selene surveyed them carefully before speaking. "The Core is the origin point of the system."A moment of silence ensued. Rylan frowned. "Are you speaking metaphorically?" "No," Selene answered, her silver eyes darkening. "Literally." Lyra felt her stomach tighten. The stranger crossed his arms. "Finally, you are revealing the truth."

Selene regarded him sharply. "We no longer have the luxury of choice." She then turned to Lyra. "Thousands of years ago, humanity discovered something beneath this world, an energy source beyond normal reality." Kael's expression shifted slightly. "The system?"

Selene nodded. "Initially, it appeared to be a form of salvation healing diseases, extending lifespans, strengthening civilisation."Rylan muttered quietly, "And then humanity corrupted it." Selene confirmed with a simple yes. "People sought more power, greater control, and faster evolution. "Lyra gradually understood. "So they experimented with it."

Selene nodded again. "Eventually, the system adapted humanity in response."

The stranger's voice grew colder. "This marked the beginning of anomalies." Silence followed. Lyra studied Selene intently. "You were present during these events," she stated. Selene did not deny it. Kael exhaled slowly. "How long have you survived?"

"Long enough to witness civilisations annihilate themselves," she replied, her voice heavy with pain. Rylan blinked. "Suddenly, I feel quite young." Lyra, however, focused on the crucial matter. "What does Caelum want with the Core?" For the first time, Selene appeared genuinely fearful. "He believes humanity must fully merge with the system."

The balcony grew silent once more. The stranger narrowed his eyes. "If he succeeds. "Humanity ceases to be human," Selene finished quietly. Lyra felt her chest tighten. Caelum's motivations terrified her not because he revelled in destruction, but because he genuinely believed he was saving the future.

Kael looked towards Selene carefully. "And you previously shared his viewpoint."

The weight of the accusation was heavy. Selene closed her eyes briefly. "Yes." Rylan looked surprised. "You and the cosmic evolution advocate were once allies?"

"We were more than allies," she replied. Her voice softened with pain. "There was a time I believed humanity needed to change for survival." "And Caelum thought we could guide that evolution peacefully?" Rylan asked. "Precisely."

Lyra pressed further. "What caused the change? "Selene gazed toward the burning city below. "The first city was destroyed." An unspoken silence followed. "The experiment spread rapidly. People lost themselves, families turned against each other, and entire nations collapsed within weeks."

Her hands clenched slightly. "Even then, Caelum considered it necessary." Lyra understood that beneath Selene's anger

"The conflict between Selene and Caelum wasn't just ideological." heartbreak.

Suddenly, the horizon drew the stranger's attention, his expression shifting instantly.

"Someone approaches," he announced. Immediate tension filled the air. A wounded messenger stumbled onto the balcony from the corridor below, bloodstained armour in disarray. "Captain," he struggled to breathe, "the northern kingdoms. "Kael caught him before he collapsed. "What has happened?"

The messenger looked directly at Lyra, terror-stricken. "They have allied against us." Selene's expression darkened immediately. Rylan frowned. "Against whom?" Weakly, the messenger answered, "Against anomalies." A heavy silence settled. Then, with a trembling voice, he added, "They refer to it as the Purge Order." Meanwhile, far below, in a concealed underground chamber, Caelum stood before the Core, a massive, glowing structure embedded beneath the earth. Slowly, it appeared to awaken.
