There was a small red glow at the tip of the carved wood. Getting brighter and also increasing in size. Growing up to about a small tennis sized ball, blasted from the wand like a cannon.
"Mhm." Reinara sharply grunted, supporting her left arm with her right. The recoil sending her a step back, from the force generated upon activation.
Swoosh!
The small fiery ball of flames that resembled burning coals cut through the air, surging the once cool air hit. Greatly affecting the path in which it passed through, obeying it's command with submission.
'Such intensity. This must be one of her lethal skills in her arsenal.' Aurelien thought, a bit impressed with Reinara.
Considering the clothes she wore, they weren't normal one bit. Having a distinct texture and pattern, made from a specific fabric similar to silk. Which he guessed was no doubt expensive, a million times better than his woven sack clothes.
But still, her personality in battle was pitiful. Her ability to cast spells made her a good match against the beasts, making up for numbers. And with her fireball spells, she shouldn't struggle much with these creatures, supposing she utilized her environment.
Probably setting some potions of the dark forest on fire, or propelling herself up a tree with the flames. Either way, she had an advantage over aurelien with no battle experience or knowledge of casting spells.
Just his undying grit one would consider annoying, and a deep driving force that compelled his survival.
"This is my chance."
Focusing his attention back to the wolf beast, it'd regained itself from Reinara's earlier lesser fireball spells. But not without suffering some deep burns to it's skull, mostly where her attacks were directed and some parts of it's skin.
Roar
The black wolf snarled, moving it's feet against the ground. It's red eyes darted towards the duo, with a ferocious intensity that made normal humans shit their pants.
But Aurelien paid it's taunts no heed. It wasn't that he was immune to fear or had a death wish, something about him had changed.
'It's just like I read in the book, Waverly Magic. The part Mozar gains his powers on the night of the full blood moon.' Just thinking about those words, recreated the scene in his mind as if he'd lived it in a previous life.
The thought sending shivers down his spine, making him drool at the thought of an external force watching him.
"Here goes nothing Exlor." With a slight nod to the invisible air, aurelien increased his pace. Making a subtle frown appear on the petite beauty face.
"What's he doing? Does this idiot plans to get burnt with the beast and get matryed!?" Reinara barely had enough air in her lungs to vent out her anger.
She was in pain both physically and mentally, from exhausting her mana pool generating that skill. Sure it was a greater version of the basic fireball spells she cast, which required a high substantial input of mana to make it possible.
Not to mention the toll it took on one's mind and body, as well as the repercussions from using high powered spells.
"I- I have to try and get help somehow. There's no telling if this is the last of the wolf beast pack or not." Reaching for the small brown pouch strapped by her waist, her eyes widened in utter disbelief.
'No, no no! Where is it? The communication device meant to alert the others if I'm in danger? Not good how will they find me now?' Her heart aches along with the rest of her body.
Without the item she seemed, she was basically on her own. Until eventually the rest of her group found her by a miracle, which might be late and a risky gamble.
.....
Roar!
A loud roar escaped the wolf beast mouth, leaping from it's spot. Propelling itself just at the right moment aurelien got into range. The hot ball of flames right behind the cocky man with gold hair.
"Aim for the heart, that's how you kill them!" Reinara yelled from behind, informing aurelien of a cruel piece of information.
"So that's how they die.. Tsk figured." Aurelien clicked his tongue, a sly smile creeping on his lips.
At first he planned on using the same pattern he used on the first beast. Striking this wolf beast in the head when it attacked, momentarily stunning it in place. Just enough time for Reinara's fireball spell, to inflict some damage to it.
It was a solid plan, but he was prepared for the worst outcome. That was the third rule of survival his parents taught him.
'Never get too complacent or restful unless you confirm your target is truly dead.'
It was a vital messaged that played a key role in the dark forest, and the monsters inhabiting it. So if by chance Reinara's spell didn't end it, he was going to kill it with the second horn stuck in the previous wolf's skull.
...
Smirking, aurelien applied brakes to his legs. Bending his upper body just as he slid on the slippery mud, providing the needed lubricant to execute this maneuver.
Gripping the black horn tightly, he plunged it into the exposed wolf heart underneath. The horn spear acting effectively, piercing into the wolf beast hide. Protruding out the back as aurelien added in more strength he could muster.
The latter then planted the other end of the horn to the mud, in less than 10 seconds while sliding out from underneath the beast. Keeping it in place for Reinara's attack to strike hitting it dead on.
Generating a small blast containing power, pulsing aurelien back tumbling on the wet dirt. Pieces of mud and parts of the wolf meat rained down on the floor.
The lingering smell of burnt flesh enveloped the environment, along with the thick black smoke evaporating from the dead beast carcass.
"W-we did it. Haha, we really did it." Aurelien excitedly cheered like a little child, jumping about. The sense of victory overwhelmed him, limiting him from thinking clearly.
"Hey! You should be proud-" He paused, tilting his head to Reinara's location.
Only to find her laying flat on the ground face first, some bit of blood excluding from the sides of her mouth.
'Damnit! She isn't dead, right Exlor?' Aurelien inwardly cursed his naivety, rushing over to the fiery woman with red hair. Crouching down a bit, luckily he could hear the sound of her heart thumping in her chest.
Indicating she was still kicking, despite having suffered some light injuries on her wrist.
"Huh? What's this?" Aurelien pondered, staring at what looked like an inscribing of sorts.
Not of letters or numbers but of symbols. Constantly changing shape and fast, in a repeated pattern. "She did mention she would soon loose consciousness, from overexerting her body. But, could this weird changing symbols also be a part of the punishment?"
The theory he has in his head was solid, but still lacked a substantial evidence to prove any of it's credibility. Hence making it just only an assumption, rather than a theory.
"There isn't any more beasts within this proximity." Listening, he couldn't hear anymore snarling or insidious sounds.
Only the low whistling of the air, and the soft swaying of the autumn leaves on the mysterious trees. Whose origin or exact period of existence were unknown.
