Amber froze, her coffee mug slipping from her fingers to shatter against the floor. She stared at Devin.. at the monster he had become, and for the first time, the carefully cultivated mask of calm and control cracked. Her mind raced, calculating escape routes, thinking of protocols, suppression overrides, everything she had learned working with the G.O.C. But none of it mattered. Devin was beyond anything they had trained for, beyond anything they had feared.
He stepped forward, deliberately slow, every movement radiating dominance. His crimson eyes fixed on her, pupils narrowing as if piercing through her soul. The faint yellow of his stage four form shimmered under the red emergency lights, his darkened fur patches bristling, muscles coiled like steel springs ready to snap. The suppression collar still glimmered faintly, a futile attempt at control
.. but it did nothing to stop the pure power radiating from him.
"Devin… you... " Amber started, her voice cracking.
He didn't answer. A low, guttural growl reverberated through the corridor, vibrating the air. He crouched slightly, sniffing, analyzing, every sense tuned into her presence.
She took a cautious step back.
His claws scraped lightly against the floor almost playful. "You played me," he whispered, his voice a chilling mix of human tone and animal resonance. "You used me… told me to trust… told me I was free."
Amber opened her mouth, but no words came.
Devin tilted his head, as though savoring her fear. His primal aura expanded.. an invisible force pressing on the minds of everyone in the immediate area. Any remaining guards further down the hall faltered, some collapsing in terror despite the reinforced containment protocols.
He allowed himself a small, calculated smirk. This wasn't about survival anymore. This wasn't about escape. This was retribution.
He took another step forward. The floor vibrated faintly under his weight. Every instinct in his being screamed, urging him to indulge in the hunt fully, but there was a method to it now.. he wasn't just a wild animal. He was a predator with focus, and Amber was his obsession.
"You… were my world," he said softly, almost tenderly, before his tone snapped into something far darker: "And now you'll watch what you've created."
Amber's heart raced. She knew she had underestimated him. Months of information gathering, months of manipulation, all meaningless against the apex predator standing before her. Her hands shook. She raised them slowly... not as a gesture of defiance, but almost in unconscious surrender.
Devin crouched fully, claws flexing. His breath came in slow, controlled bursts, each inhalation drawing in the scent of her fear, the metallic tang of blood in the corridors, the residual smoke and ash of his earlier carnage.
Then, with an almost imperceptible shift, he exploded forward.. not with blinding speed, but with controlled, lethal intent.
Amber scrambled backward, hitting a reinforced glass panel. It cracked slightly, but Devin was already upon her.
He pinned her against the wall with a force that made the steel supports groan. His face hovered close to hers, glowing eyes mere inches from hers, radiating sheer, primal dominance.
"You made me this," he whispered, voice low, resonant, vibrating with raw power. "And now… you'll feel every moment of what it cost me."
Amber's mind raced. The G.O.C protocols, the containment alarms, the weapons.. they were irrelevant. Nothing could stop him now.
Devin's claws flexed against the wall near her face, deliberately leaving marks, intentionally terrifying her. His breath was hot, and his teeth, slightly bared, glistened in the emergency light.
For a heartbeat, he paused.. not because he was restrained, not because he feared consequences, but because he wanted her to understand. To recognize the full weight of her betrayal.
Then, without warning, he surged again, this time not to attack immediately, but to circle her slowly, testing her fear, savoring it. Each step was deliberate, heavy, predatory. The sound of his claws scraping against the floor echoed in the corridor, an unholy symphony of anticipation.
Amber's voice finally came, trembling: "Devin… I... "
He cut her off with a low growl, leaning in close again. "No excuses. No apologies. Not anymore."
Every instinct within him pulsed. He had shed the boy he once was long ago. What remained now was something far older, far crueler.. Stage Four fully awake, fully aware, and fully unleashed.
The hallway itself seemed to shrink around him, every light flickering as his aura radiated outward. He was the apex predator, and Amber was the center of his hunt.
And now… it was time to see just how far his vengeance would go.
Amber barely had time to breathe before Devin's restraint finally snapped.
The predator took over.
He lunged.
His claws raked across her torso, tearing through her uniform and sending her crashing to the ground. She screamed, the sound echoing sharply down the ruined corridor. Devin followed instantly, pinning her with overwhelming strength. His jaws snapped down on her shoulder.. not a clean bite, but a brutal, shaking maul meant to dominate, to punish, to release everything bottled inside him.
And yet…
His eyes began to blur.
Tears welled up.
They slid down his face, mixing with the blood already streaking his fur.
He kept attacking.
Each slash came with a tremor in his hands. Each bite carried both rage and something deeper... betrayal, grief, shattered trust. He growled, but the sound cracked halfway through, turning into something almost broken.
"You… lied…" he muttered between breaths.
He struck again.
Amber tried to crawl, but he dragged her back, claws digging into the floor to hold her in place. He slammed her against the ground, then again, then again.. not methodical anymore, but raw emotion spilling out violently. His breathing became ragged, uneven.
Tears continued falling.
His vision flickered between the monster and the memory... the farm, the sunlight, her smile, the illusion of freedom. Each memory made the next attack harsher, yet more conflicted.
"I trusted you…" he whispered, voice shaking.
He bit down again, harder this time, shaking his head as if trying to tear away the past itself. His shoulders trembled. His claws slashed, but the rhythm faltered, like he was fighting himself as much as her.
Amber's movements slowed. Her voice became faint. The corridor smelled overwhelmingly of blood and smoke.
Devin lifted his claw for the final strike.
His tears fell freely now, dripping from his jaw. His arm shook.. rage telling him to finish it, something else hesitating for just a fraction of a second.
Then
BOOM.
The wall beside them exploded inward.
A massive armored figure burst through concrete and steel, tackling Devin full force. The impact blasted both of them through the opposite wall, sending debris and dust flying everywhere.
They crashed into another chamber, rolling across shattered flooring. Devin snarled instinctively, recovering mid-roll and slashing at the attacker. His claws screeched across reinforced alloy plating, sparks flying.
The man in enhanced mech armor skidded back, stabilizers firing to halt his momentum. Hydraulic systems hissed. The suit was bulky but clearly built for power.. thick plating, reinforced joints, and glowing energy lines running along the arms.
His visor locked onto Devin.
"You're not touching her again."
The voice was distorted through the helmet, but filled with fury.
Devin slowly rose, shoulders heaving, tears still visible streaking through the blood on his face. His eyes burned brighter now.. not just rage, but the interruption of his vengeance.
The armored man clenched his fists. "I warned them this would happen… I told them he'd break containment…"
He stepped forward, heavy boots cracking debris underfoot.
"Now I end it."
Devin tilted his head slightly, breathing low and dangerous. The grief inside him twisted into something colder. His claws flexed, scraping deep grooves into the floor.
The two predators... one biological, one mechanical... faced each other in the ruined chamber.
The armored man fired first.
His mech's forearm split open, launching a concussive blast directly at Devin's chest. The impact sent a shockwave through the room, blasting debris into the air. Dust filled the chamber.
But when it cleared... Devin was still standing.
He leaned forward slightly, shoulders hunched, breathing heavy. His glowing eyes narrowed.
Then he charged.
The mech suit braced, hydraulics screaming as the man swung a reinforced gauntlet. Devin ducked under it with unnatural speed and slammed his shoulder into the armor's torso. The impact dented the plating and launched the man backward through a bank of shattered consoles.
The armored figure recovered quickly, boosters igniting as he surged forward. He grabbed Devin and drove him into the floor hard enough to crater the concrete. The mech's knee pistoned downward.. once, twice.. trying to crush him.
Devin snarled and bit into the armored forearm.
Metal screeched.
His jaws compressed with monstrous force, bending alloy inward. The man shouted in surprise as warning lights flashed across his visor. Devin twisted violently, ripping the arm sideways and tearing internal wiring loose.
Sparks exploded.
The mech staggered.
Devin surged up from beneath him, claws slashing across the chest plate. Deep gouges tore through the armor, exposing mechanical components beneath. He grabbed the suit's shoulder joint and yanked, muscles bulging as he ripped the plating partially free.
The armored man retaliated with a point-blank pulse blast to Devin's face. The explosion knocked Devin back but only for a moment. He shook his head, fur singed, eyes now burning with pure predatory focus.
He disappeared.
The mech's sensors scrambled, scanning wildly.
Too late.
Devin appeared behind him, claws plunging into the back of the suit. He dragged downward, tearing through power lines. The mech convulsed as systems flickered.
"No.. !" the man shouted, trying to turn.
Devin grabbed the helmet.
With both hands.
And slammed it repeatedly into the floor. Once. Twice. Three times. Each impact cracked the reinforced visor further. Hydraulic fluid leaked. The suit's movements slowed.
The mech tried to activate boosters.
Devin lifted the entire armored body overhead.. then spiked it into the ground. The floor shattered beneath them. The suit's core unit sparked violently.
He didn't stop.
He ripped the arm free completely, tossing it aside. He drove his claws into the chest cavity and tore open the plating like peeling metal skin. The pilot inside coughed, dazed, exposed.
Devin's eyes met his.
There was no hesitation now.
He ended it with brutal efficiency.
Silence fell.
The mech lay ruined, smoke rising from destroyed circuitry. Devin stood over the wreckage, breathing heavily. The tears had stopped... replaced by cold emptiness. The vengeance had been interrupted, but the rage still simmered deep inside.
Alarms were dead.
The facility was silent.
Nothing moved.
He sniffed the air one last time. Amber's scent lingered faintly behind him, but he didn't turn back. Something inside him had already closed that chapter... violently and painfully.
Instead, he turned toward the exterior access corridor.
He moved quickly now, tearing through the last reinforced door. Cold air rushed in as he burst outside. The desert night stretched endlessly before him... dark dunes under a pale moon, wind carrying sand across the ground.
For the first time since the escape began, there were no walls.
No collars.
No handlers.
Just open wilderness.
He stepped forward, his massive form silhouetted against the moonlight. The wind blew across his fur, carrying away the scent of blood and smoke.
Behind him, the facility burned in scattered sections, small fires flickering.
Devin lowered into a crouch.
Then he sprinted.
He moved across the sand like a phantom, each stride covering massive distance. Within seconds, he was already far from the compound. The night swallowed him, his glowing eyes fading into the darkness.
The desert accepted him.
And Devin vanished into the open world.. free, wounded, and more dangerous than ever.
