The Silent Citradel faded into mist, leaving Kael and Lyra standing on a narrow bridge of crystal suspended over endless darkness. The Trialblade pulsed faintly, its glow dimmer that before, as if bracing for what lay ahead.
Kael frowned. "Okay... this doesn't look promising. Bridges over bottomless pits never and well."
Lyra's voice was quies, almost reverent. "This is hte Trial of Shadows. Here, you will face not monsters, not echoes, but yourself."
Kael groaned. "Fantastic. Therapy, round three. Do I at least get a couch this time?"
The darkness below stireed, rising like smoke. it coalesced into a figure Kael himself, but twisted. His eyes glowed red, his grin cruel, his Trialblade blackened and jagged.
Kael froze. "Oh no. Not another clone. This one looks like me after three bad days and no coffee."
The shadow Kael spoke, its voice dripping with venom. "I am your weakness. Your laziness, your fear, your doubt. I am everything you hide behind jokes."
Kael gritted his teeth. "Yeah, well, at least I'm funny."
The shadow attacked, its strikes faster, sharper. Kael blocked desperately, stumbling backward. Each clash sent shockwaves across the bridge, cracks spreading.
Lyra called out, "You cannot defeat him with strength alone. He knows every flaw, every hesitation."
Kael shouted back, "Great! So I'm basically fighting myself with cheat codes!"
The shadow whispered as it struck. "You are not a hero. You are a coward. You will fail her. You will fail everyone."
Kael's chest tightened. He swung wildly, but the shadow blocked with ease.
Lyra's voice cut through. "Do not fight him as an enemy. Accept him. He is part of you."
Kael hesitated. "Accept him? He's literally trying to kill me!"
Lyra's eyes glowed. "The Trial tests not destruction, but balance. Embrace your shadow, and you will endure."
Kael steadied his breath. He lowered the Trialblade, staring at his dark reflection. "You're right. I am lazy. I am scared. I hide behind sarcasm because it's easier than caring. But you're me. And I'm not running anymore."
The shadow froze, its grin fading. The Trialblade pulsed, glowing brighter. Kael raised it not to strike, but to merge.
Light flared, enveloping both Kael and his shadow. The darkness dissolved, flowing into the blade. The Trialblade transformed, its aura deeper, stronger, balanced between light and shadow.
The bridge steadied, the cracks sealing. Silence returned. Lyra approached, her eyes softened. "You faced yourself. Few survive this trial."
Kael smirked weakly. "Yeah, well, I guess I'm stubborn enough to argue with myself and win."
Lyra's lips curved faintly. "You are more than stubborn. You are becoming what the realm needs."
Kael chuckled. "Don't get too excited. I'm still the laziest hero in the multiverse."
