Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: Warning Signs

The moment lingered long after the library quieted. Even when Riku's teasing faded into silence, even when Sofia eventually packed up her things and left with a soft goodbye, even when the study session dissolved into its natural end, Kai still felt it that lingering awareness, like a shadow had wrapped itself around him and refused to let go.

Elias had left earlier. Quietly. Without drawing attention. Without explanation.

But his absence did not bring relief.

If anything, it made the silence feel heavier.

Kai stood at the edge of the library steps a while later, his bag slung over his shoulder, thoughts still tangled in that strange, electric moment from earlier. His fingers flexed slightly at his side, as if still remembering the contact that had sparked through him.

It didn't make sense.

That was the problem.

He exhaled slowly, forcing himself to move, to step into the open air, where the evening breeze brushed against his skin and grounded him slightly. The campus was quieter now, shadows stretching longer across the pathways, students scattered and fading into the distance as night began to settle.

This was supposed to help.

Distance.

Clarity.

Instead, Elias lingered in his thoughts like an unresolved equation.

Kai tightened his grip on the strap of his bag and started walking, his pace steady but his mind anything but. He replayed everything the mirroring, the proximity, the way Elias seemed to insert himself into his space without hesitation.

And then that moment.

That single, fleeting touch.

A mistake?

Intentional?

Kai's jaw tightened. He hated uncertainty. Hated not knowing where things stood, what someone's intentions were. And Elias… Elias operated in layers.

"Hey."

The voice came from ahead, cutting cleanly through his thoughts.

Kai looked up.

Tobias.

Leaning casually against a nearby post, hands tucked into his pockets, expression unreadable at first glance but his eyes carried something sharper, something that didn't quite match his relaxed posture.

Kai slowed his steps but didn't stop completely. "Tobias."

There was a brief pause before Tobias pushed off the post and stepped closer, studying him in a way that felt less casual now. More intentional.

"You've been around him," Tobias said. It wasn't a question.

Kai's brows knit slightly. "Who?"

A faint smirk tugged at Tobias' lips. "You know exactly who."

Kai didn't respond immediately. He didn't need to.

Tobias exhaled, crossing his arms loosely. "Elias Vanderwood."

There it was again. That name.

Kai's expression didn't change, but something in his posture shifted, a subtle tightening that didn't go unnoticed.

Tobias studied that reaction carefully. "You should be careful around him."

Kai gave a short, almost humorless scoff. "Careful how?"

"Careful in the way people usually are when they don't realize they're being played," Tobias replied evenly. "He's not someone you just… casually get close to."

Kai's gaze sharpened. "You make it sound like he's dangerous."

Tobias didn't deny it.

That silence said enough.

Kai folded his arms now, his tone quiet but edged with skepticism. "You don't even know him."

Tobias let out a short breath, something like amusement but without warmth. "You're right. I don't know him the way you're starting to."

That landed harder than expected.

Kai frowned slightly. "What's that supposed to mean?"

"It means," Tobias said, his tone dropping just a fraction, "that I've seen what happens to people who get close to him."

Kai didn't respond immediately.

The weight behind Tobias' words wasn't something easily dismissed.

"Elias doesn't move without purpose," Tobias continued. "Everything he does is calculated. People think he's just quiet, composed, intelligent charming, even. But that's exactly how he pulls people in."

Kai's jaw tightened again, but he remained silent.

"He studies people," Tobias said. "Figures out what they want. What they respond to. Then he gives it to them."

Kai's gaze flickered, just slightly.

"Not because he cares," Tobias added, watching him closely, "but because it gives him control."

A brief pause stretched between them.

Kai's voice, when it came, was quieter than before. "And you think that's what he's doing to me?"

Tobias didn't answer right away.

Instead, he studied Kai carefully, as if weighing his next words.

"I think," Tobias said slowly, "that you're someone he's decided to focus on. And once Elias decides that…" he trailed off, letting the implication hang in the air.

Kai's expression remained controlled, but something beneath it had shifted.

Because he couldn't dismiss it entirely.

Not after everything that had happened.

Not after the mirroring. The closeness. The touch.

"You're overthinking it," Kai said finally, though his tone lacked conviction.

Tobias shook his head slightly. "I wish I was."

Kai studied him for a moment longer, searching for exaggeration, for some sign that this was just unnecessary warning. But Tobias didn't look like he was trying to stir trouble. He looked… certain.

That was more unsettling than anything else.

"If you want to ignore it," Tobias said, stepping back slightly, "that's your choice. Just don't say you weren't warned."

Kai said nothing.

Tobias turned as if to leave, then paused, glancing back once more. "He's good at making people feel like they're the ones in control."

A beat.

"But that's only because he lets them think that."

And then he walked away.

Kai stood there for a moment, unmoving.

The warning echoed in his head, overlapping with everything else Elias' behavior, the subtle tension, the unexplained closeness.

Manipulative.

Controlled.

Intentional.

Was that what this was?

Kai clenched his jaw, frustration rising. He didn't like being uncertain. He didn't like second-guessing himself. And yet…

The doubt had already been planted.

He exhaled slowly, pushing the thoughts aside, forcing himself to move again. He needed clarity. Not speculation. Not assumptions.

If Elias had an intention, Kai would figure it out himself.

He didn't need someone else telling him what to think.

But even as he tried to settle into that mindset, something kept tugging at the back of his mind.

A quiet, persistent awareness.

As if someone was watching.

Kai slowed his steps slightly, his senses sharpening.

He didn't turn immediately.

He waited.

Then

He looked.

Across the courtyard, partially obscured by distance and shadows, stood a figure.

Elias.

Still. Calm.

Watching.

Kai's breath slowed, his entire body instinctively going still as their gazes met across the space between them.

And then

Elias smiled.

Not broadly. Not openly.

But enough.

Enough for Kai to see it clearly.

A small, knowing curve of the lips.

Amused.

As if he had heard everything.

As if Tobias' warning had been nothing more than a predictable, entertaining interruption.

Kai's chest tightened slightly.

Because that smile…

It didn't look defensive.

It didn't look confused.

It looked like someone who was exactly where they wanted to be.

And that realization settled in slowly, like a warning he couldn't ignore.

Something had already begun.

And Elias wasn't just aware of it.

He was watching it unfold.
