Chapter 17 - chapter 17

They didn't stop running immediately.

Even after the alley disappeared behind them.

Even after the street opened up again.

Only when the footsteps were gone…

When the pressure faded…

Did Ethan finally slow down.

"…They let us go," Lena said, slightly out of breath.

Ethan nodded.

"…Yeah."

That was the problem.

They let them go.

Kai caught up a few seconds later, completely calm as usual.

"No pursuit," he confirmed.

Ethan turned to him.

"…That wasn't random."

Kai shook his head.

"No."

Silence.

"…They were coordinated," Ethan continued. "Positioning, timing… they weren't just attacking."

Kai's eyes showed a hint of approval.

"Good observation."

Lena frowned.

"…So what does that mean?"

Ethan exhaled slowly.

"It means they're organized."

The word settled heavily.

Organized.

Not just individuals.

Not just random threats.

A system.

Kai nodded.

"Exactly."

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"…Then Adrian… the woman… these three…"

"They're all connected," Kai finished.

Lena crossed her arms slightly.

"…Connected how?"

Kai looked at her briefly.

"Different roles," he said. "Same structure."

Ethan frowned.

"…Like a group?"

Kai tilted his head slightly.

"More than that."

Ethan's chest tightened.

"…An organization."

Kai didn't deny it.

Silence followed.

Because that changed everything.

"…So I'm not just dealing with one enemy," Ethan said.

"No," Kai replied. "You're dealing with many."

Lena exhaled slowly.

"…That's not good."

"No," Ethan agreed quietly.

Because now—

It wasn't about survival in one fight.

It was about surviving something much bigger.

"…Why me?" Ethan asked suddenly.

Kai looked at him.

"…Because of your ability," he said.

"That's not enough," Ethan replied. "There have to be others like me."

Kai nodded slightly.

"There are."

Ethan frowned.

"…Then why am I being targeted like this?"

Kai didn't answer immediately.

Then—

"Because yours stands out."

Ethan's chest tightened.

"…How?"

Kai stepped closer.

"Most abilities are direct," he explained. "They affect the physical world. Movement. Force. Matter."

Ethan listened carefully.

"But yours…" Kai continued.

"…affects people."

Silence.

"…Emotions," Ethan said.

Kai nodded.

"That makes it unpredictable," he said. "And dangerous."

Lena looked at Ethan.

"…Because it can't be easily controlled," she said.

"Or countered," Kai added.

Ethan's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…Except by people like Adrian."

Kai nodded once.

"Which is why people like him exist."

That made sense.

Too much sense.

"…So they're balancing things," Ethan muttered.

Kai gave a faint smile.

"You're catching on."

Ethan exhaled slowly.

"…So what do they want?"

Kai's expression shifted slightly.

"Control," he said.

The word hit differently.

"…Of people like me," Ethan said.

"Yes."

Silence.

Ethan clenched his fists slightly.

"…I'm not joining them."

Kai shrugged.

"They're not asking."

That made Lena tense.

"…Then what happens?"

Kai looked at Ethan.

"If you're useful… they contain you."

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"…And if I'm not?"

Kai didn't hesitate.

"They eliminate you."

Silence fell hard.

Ethan felt it.

That weight again.

Not from power.

From reality.

"…So those three…" Lena said slowly.

"Were testing him," Kai replied.

Ethan nodded slightly.

"…To see if I'm worth keeping," he said.

"Or removing," Kai added.

Ethan exhaled.

"…Then I need to get stronger fast."

Kai shook his head.

"Wrong."

Ethan frowned.

"…What?"

"Strength alone won't save you," Kai said. "They have stronger people."

That wasn't reassuring.

"…Then what will?" Ethan asked.

Kai looked at him directly.

"Understanding."

Ethan paused.

"…My power?"

"No," Kai replied.

"…Them."

Silence.

That shifted everything again.

"…You want me to study them?" Ethan asked.

Kai nodded.

"If you know how they move… how they think…"

"…I can stay ahead," Ethan finished.

Kai smiled faintly.

"Now you're thinking like someone who survives."

Ethan looked down briefly.

Then back up.

"…Then start talking," he said.

Kai raised an eyebrow slightly.

"About what?"

"The organization," Ethan replied.

Kai paused.

Then—

"…Not yet," he said.

Ethan frowned.

"…Why?"

Kai's gaze sharpened slightly.

"Because information has a cost too."

Silence.

Lena crossed her arms.

"…Everything has a cost with you."

Kai smirked slightly.

"That's because everything matters."

Ethan exhaled slowly.

"…Then what do I do now?"

Kai turned slightly, looking down the street.

"Train," he said.

Ethan blinked.

"…That's it?"

"For now."

Ethan frowned slightly.

"…And when they come again?"

Kai glanced back at him.

"They will."

Ethan's expression hardened.

"…Then next time…"

He paused.

"…I'll be ready."

Kai studied him for a moment.

Then nodded once.

"Good."

Because now—

Ethan understood the truth.

This wasn't just about power.

It was about survival in a system designed to control people like him.

And if he wanted to stay free—

He had to learn faster than they expected.

Or be caught.
