Chapter 21 - chapter 21

The silence didn't feel safe.

It felt like waiting.

Ethan walked beside Lena, his mind still replaying the encounter.

That man—

The way he moved.

The way he understood.

"…A variable," Ethan muttered.

Lena glanced at him.

"You're still thinking about it."

Ethan nodded slightly.

"…He didn't attack."

"That's a good thing, right?" she asked.

Ethan didn't answer immediately.

Because it didn't feel like one.

"…No," he said finally.

Lena frowned.

"…Why not?"

Ethan exhaled slowly.

"Because now they know I'm worth watching."

The words settled heavily between them.

Kai, walking just ahead this time, spoke without turning.

"Not watching."

Ethan looked up.

"…Then what?"

Kai's voice was calm.

"Tracking."

Silence.

That was worse.

"…So I'm a target now," Ethan said.

Kai nodded once.

"Yes."

Lena's grip tightened slightly.

"…Then we need to be more careful."

Ethan shook his head.

"Careful won't be enough."

Because if they were tracking him—

That meant patterns.

Movement.

Habits.

Everything mattered now.

"…Then what do we do?" Lena asked.

Ethan slowed slightly.

"…We stop being predictable."

Kai smirked faintly.

"Good."

Ethan ignored him.

Because this wasn't a lesson anymore.

This was survival.

"…From now on," Ethan continued, "we don't stay in one place too long."

Lena nodded.

"And we don't take the same route twice," she added.

Ethan glanced at her.

"…Exactly."

Kai chuckled softly.

"Looks like you're learning faster than expected."

Ethan didn't respond.

Because learning fast was no longer optional.

It was necessary.

The street ahead was busy now.

Normal people.

Normal lives.

But Ethan couldn't see it that way anymore.

Because somewhere—

Hidden among them—

Someone could be watching.

"…Can you feel anything?" Lena asked quietly.

Ethan focused slightly.

Not fully.

Not deeply.

Just enough.

"…Nothing clear," he said.

But that didn't mean anything.

Because now—

He knew better.

The strongest ones didn't announce themselves.

They observed.

Waited.

"…That's what makes this worse," Ethan muttered.

Kai glanced at him.

"Uncertainty?"

Ethan nodded.

"…Yeah."

Kai shrugged.

"Get used to it."

Not helpful.

But true.

Ethan exhaled slowly.

"…Then we force certainty."

Kai raised an eyebrow slightly.

"How?"

Ethan's eyes sharpened.

"…We bait them."

Lena stopped walking.

"…What?"

Ethan turned slightly toward her.

"If they're tracking me," he said, "then they'll follow movement."

Lena frowned.

"You want them to come to us?"

Ethan nodded.

"Yes."

Kai's smile widened slightly.

"Now that's interesting."

Lena shook her head.

"That's dangerous."

Ethan met her gaze.

"So is waiting."

Silence.

Because he wasn't wrong.

"…If we keep reacting," he continued, "they stay in control."

Kai nodded.

"First rule," he said.

Ethan didn't look at him.

"…Never let them decide your space."

Lena exhaled slowly.

"…And this lets us decide it?"

Ethan nodded.

"If we choose where it happens."

Silence.

Then—

Lena nodded.

"…Then we choose carefully."

Ethan's expression softened slightly.

"…We will."

Kai stepped forward.

"Then let's hear it," he said.

Ethan looked ahead.

Scanning.

Not for enemies—

For terrain.

"…We need somewhere controlled," he said.

"Limited exits," Lena added.

"Predictable movement," Kai finished.

Ethan's eyes landed on something.

An underground parking structure.

Concrete.

Tight.

Multiple pillars.

"…There," he said.

Kai nodded.

"Good choice."

Lena looked uneasy.

"…This is really happening."

Ethan glanced at her.

"…You can still walk away."

Lena didn't hesitate.

"No."

That word again.

Simple.

Final.

Ethan exhaled.

"…Then stay close."

They moved.

Into the structure.

The air changed immediately.

Cooler.

Quieter.

Every sound echoed.

Every movement felt amplified.

Perfect.

Ethan stopped near the center.

"…This works."

Kai leaned against a pillar.

"Now we wait."

Lena crossed her arms slightly.

"I don't like waiting."

Ethan didn't respond.

Because neither did he.

Seconds passed.

Then—

That feeling returned.

Sharp.

Clear.

Closer than before.

Ethan's expression hardened.

"…They took the bait."

Footsteps echoed.

Not rushed.

Confident.

One.

Just one.

Lena frowned.

"…Only one?"

Ethan didn't relax.

"…No."

He focused.

"…One in front."

A pause.

"…Two more above."

Kai smiled faintly.

"Good."

The footsteps stopped.

A figure stepped into view.

Calm.

Composed.

"…So you chose the battlefield," the figure said.

Ethan stepped forward slightly.

"…Yeah."

The figure tilted their head.

"…Bold."

Ethan's eyes sharpened.

"…Necessary."

Silence.

Then—

The figure smiled faintly.

"…Let's see if you're worth the effort."

Above—

Movement.

Below—

Tension snapped tight.

Ethan exhaled slowly.

Because this time—

He wasn't being chased.

He wasn't reacting.

He had chosen this.

And whatever happened next—

Would be on his terms.
